Area school districts approve levy

By Rin Porter Voters agreed to approve the renewal of operating levies for the school districts of Browerville, Eagle Valley, and Long Prairie-Grey Eagle by comfortable margins last week. Browerville voters agreed to the levy renewal by 87% to 12%. Eagle Valley voters approved their levy renewal by 69% to 30%. Long Prairie-Grey Eagle district voters approved their levy renewal by 76% to 24%. Across the state, 58 districts requested levy renewals. According to the Minnesota School Board Association, 57 districts approved the renewals. Only Rocori school district, that serves the Cold Spring area, failed to renew its levy. Browerville School Superintendent Bob Schaefer was pleased with the vote. He commented, Once again, the community of Browerville, the residents of the Browerville School District, parents, faculty/support staff, administration, and school board came together to support the Browerville Public School by renewing the 'Excess Referendum Levy' for another ten years. We are extremely fortunate to be able to educate the students of the Browerville School District with such trust. Now It is our responsibility to work diligently to continue the 'Tradition, Pride, and Excellence' of the Browerville Public School. Eagle Valley School Superintendent Jim Madsen was relieved by the vote. He commented, I would like to thank the voters for their support of the renewal of the Eagle Valley Public Schools Excess levy. Without this levy the district would have been in far worse financial difficulties than it probably could have handled. Madsen continued, Finances are still tight, and will need continued monitoring and use of fiscal restraint. This district I can tell over the years has been very efficient with their dollars. Bonding debt is very little compared to their neighboring districts. The excess levy is below the states average. Local school boards and school employees will be breathing sighs of relief now that their excess levy funding for the next ten years is in place.

Phyllis Paskewitz (representing the TC Home Council) presented a check from The Todd County Home Council to Gary Stracek from the Todd County Historical Society . New tool enhances Veterans access to their VA health care

Veterans who receive primary care services at the St. Cloud VA Health Care System can now take advantage of a new way to communicate with their health care teams thats as fast as email, but completely safe and secure! The new communication tool is called Secure Messaging and allows Veterans to communicate electronically with any primary care team in the St. Cloud VA Health Care System. Simply put, Secure Messaging is talking to your primary care team via email, said Brian Vetter, MyHealtheVet coordinator for the St. Cloud VA. Secure Messaging is meant for routine communication, including questions about appointments, prescriptions or other nonurgent health care matters, added Vetter. We plan on expanding Secure Messaging to other care areas soon. He added that Secure Messaging helps Veterans avoid long hold times on the telephone or missed phone calls from their health care team. Plus, unlike an appointment, there are no co-pays for Secure Messaging. Marisa Burley, of Princeton, Minnesota, a Veteran who uses Secure Messaging. I like using it to speak with my primary care provider instead of calling the clinic, and have used it to inquire about medications and getting refills," she said. To take advantage of Secure Messaging Veterans need to create an account on My HealtheVet (www.myhealth.va.gov) making sure to check VA patient when they register. Next, they complete the in-person authentication form. Veterans can complete the form at home and drop it off during their next visit or they can complete the form at any primary care clinic here at St. Cloud or any of our community-based outpatient clinics, Vetter said. After the form is completed, it will take a few days for the Veterans account to be authenticated. Veterans can tell their account has been authenticated if they can view their VA appointments and VA lab results on My HealtheVet these are some of the sites enhanced features available to Vets who complete the authentication process. Once the authentication is completed Veterans should login to their My HealtheVet account, click on Secure Messaging and then read the terms and conditions and then select the Opt-in button at the bottom left of the page and then click on Submit. Secure Messaging should not be used for urgent communication, cautioned Brian Vetter, My HealtheVet coordinator for St. Cloud. For more information about Secure Messaging and the many features of My HealtheVet, contact Brian Vetter at (320) 255-6480, extension 7335 or at brian.vetter@va.gov.

OPINIONS
A measure of success
a perfect location, was still in place. I changed clothes, grabbed my gear, and headed for the timber to hunt for the last couple hours of the day. When I approached the area where my blind was supposed to be, I saw my chair, but no blind. The tent was still being held by one stake but was flipped upside down and over the edge of the ditch. The canvas folding chair was still in place after the raging rain storm, only because the seat will hold about a gallon of water, enough to weigh it down. I dumped the water out of my chair, flipped my tent back into position and nocked an arrow in preparation for the deer that would surely pass by. I sat quietly for a half hour or so, waiting for everything to quiet down. If anything happened to see me wrestling a tent uphill, they should be miles away by then. This waiting period gives a person ample time to measure distances to surrounding trees and check the contents of the blind left from the last hunt. I discovered foil lined cardboard peanut containers get soft and limp in the rain but the peanuts left inside are only minimally damp. A person always gets hungry while waiting and damp peanuts are almost as good as fresh. When I finished off the container of only moderately soggy peanuts, I used my rattling antlers to test the area. Smacking the two shed antlers together sounds like two bucks fighting. During the rut, deer will come from near and far to watch the fight. Before long, I could see something moving in the thick brush across the creek. I clashed them together again. A young ten point buck came toward me and stopped within range just off to my right. The only deer I was going to take was a doe for meat or a really big buck to hang on the wall. Medium sized deer would have to wait a year or two if they wanted to make my freezer. I still could not resist playing with him. When he turned to walk up the creek bank, I rattled again. This time he came back, standing directly in front of me in the creek bottom, and stared at the blind. After a few minutes, something spooked him and he bounded off into the timber. I rattled again and again he came back to investigate. By the time he lost interest in the fight he could not find, it was getting dark. No more deer came in and I didnt get meat for the freezer, but I consider it a successful hunt when a person can call in deer and watch them up close. Dear Readers,

A letter from the country

I hope you are all having a wonderful, excitement filled dear hunting season. Im glad Aaron allowed me to write the Letter from the Country this week, although I had to do some begging and pleading. I think hes worried Ill write random and unimportant things in his paper. Oh well, he edits this anyway. The Host clan has had a wonderful deer hunting season so far. I shot a nice doe not even twenty minutes after dawn opening morning and my younger brother Jordan, shot his first deer the day after his 12th birthday. My father and brother Brandon have yet to shoot a deer, but hey, we still have time. I must admit I do enjoy rubbing it in Brandons face how a girl (me) shot a deer before him. I have seen quite a few nice bucks in the papers this past week and wonder why I havent yet come across one. Since I shot a doe opening morning, all Ive seen are small button bucks and yearlings. Theyre fun to watch through the scope, but I feel they are constantly antagonizing me. Since I shot a deer, my father has limited me to shooting only large does for meat or bucks with large antlers. Butchering the deer is another story. My father finally taught me how to butcher a deer, which I sort of enjoy, although its a long process. We had quite a few helpers this year, but it still took four or more hours. The first quarter of school has passed and Im glad to have a four day weekend to hunt, sleep, and read my newest book. School has been quite stressful- between writing a nine page paper, making an outline comparing two world religions, and multiple tests. I cant wait until college. (That was sarcasm.) My parents, friends, and teachers have been asking me where I want to go to college and what I want to do. To answer both questions- I still havent decided. Ive spent quite a lot of time looking at colleges through out Minnesota and other states, and requesting information. As for what I want to do, I guess I want to become a surgeon, physician, or something in the medical field, but this is constantly changing. Im only a junior in high school! Right now all I want to do is to go out with friends on Friday nights, curl up on my comfy chair with a good book, and sleep in as late as I can. Speaking of school, Im glad the levy referendum passed for Browerville and surrounding schools. Its great and the schools can use the money to maintain and enhance current programs. I cant imagine what would happen if the levy hadnt passed and $114,000 would have to be cut from our schools budget. Im looking forward to what this referendum will bring to our school regarding technology, textbooks, curriculum, and supplies. The school recently purchased a mobile computer lab, which proved extremely convenient when my Algebra III class needed computers to take a test. Now that volleyball season is over, Ive been putting energy into my other extra curricular activities. Tryouts are coming up for band students soon and I havent even begun practicing. I am also extremely excited to announce that One Act Play is back! We have a new theater director, named Beth. I am trying out for that soon. As for BPA, I was elected as the Browerville chapters Vice President, and the Regional chapter treasurer. BPA competitions are coming up quickly and I need to prepare for them. I have also had a lot of fun with my peer helper, Nicholas, who loves football. I get to go outside for recess every Wednesday afternoon to play with the younger kids, which is so much fun. Well, I think thats enough for now. I hope everyone had a great hunting season. I bet many of you cannot wait for Thanksgiving. My mouth is already watering for turkey and home-made apple pie. I better get going so I can finish work in time to go out for the evening hunt and get that big buck. Until next time, Tarissa Host, Intern

By Walter Scott Thursday morning was cold, the wind was blowing, and rain was coming down in sheets. It makes me glad, some days I have to go to work. If I werent working, I would feel obligated to go hunting. The deer rut is in full swing and its only a matter of time before the deer of ones liking passes by. The deer are running around like crazy and will come when called with rattled antlers. A person cant waste these few precious days of the rut. As hard as it is to admit, with weather like that, work in a nice warm office is better than freezing high up in a tree thats swaying in the breeze while cold rain runs down ones back. By early afternoon, the rain quit so I left work. My pop-up blind, that Ive been sure was in

Letter to the editor

STOP AND THINK-WORDS CAN HURT
Each generation has had its bullies, but today's bullies are more violent. Modern technology allows them to spread their hate wide and fast by using cell phones and the internet including the social networking sites. A national survey shows that 75 percent of school age kids have been bullied at least once during their school years. One of the reasons it's so hard to address the problem is it is done stealthily, out of sight of parents or teachers. Too many adults assume that it is a rite of passage that teaches kids to stand up for themselves and fail to take it seriously and intervene. What message does this send to our kids???? Bullying can take many forms such as name calling, spreading hurtful stories, excluding them from groups, making demeaning comments, taking possessions or money and even hitting and kicking. The bullying can occur face-to-face, over the phone or through the internet-cyberbullying. Studies show that boys do more bullying, but an increasing number of girls are involved in this destructive behavior. While boys tend to be more physical, in your face and operate alone, girls are more verbal and indirect operating in groups. For those being bullied, parents and care givers can help by listening to the kids and letting them know that coming to you was the right thing. Assure them that the bullying is not their fault. You should find out what they want to happen and discuss what steps can be taken to solve the problem. For those that do the bullying, they need to be held accountable for their behavior following through with consistent consequences for their behavior. This year's slogan "See it, get help, stop it" is the best way for all of us to do our part in addressing the problem of bullying. November 14th-18th has been designated as Anti-Bullying Week and the whole month of November is National Child Safety and Protection Month. We all have to do more to make all our children feel safe at home, in school and in our communities. If you know of someone who is being bullied or a child that needs help please contact Hand of Hope Resource Center at 320-732-2319 or 1-800-682-4547. States counties with highest percentage of unbelted deaths

A study of the states counties with the highest percentage of unbelted traffic deaths points to problem areas in the southeast, southwest, northwest, as well as a stretch of eastern counties running north from the Twin Cities, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) Office of Traffic Safety. DPS named 20 counties with the highest percentages of unbelted traffic deaths following a statewide seat belt enforcement campaign, Oct. 1427, in which 260 reporting agencies cited more than 10,000 motorists for belt violations. In a similar 2010 campaign, more than 13,000 motorists were ticketed. During 20082010 in Minnesota, there were 932 vehicle occupants killed in traffic crashes and 409 were not buckled up (44 percent). (View county specific seat belt data.) Weve made great progress to improve the states seat belt use, yet in many parts of the state motorists are making the poor choice to travel unbelted, and they are paying the ultimate price for taking that risk, says Donna Berger, acting director of the DPS Office of Traffic Safety.
