chest strap users guide for more information regarding the proper usage of the strap. Note2: Only one persons heart rate can be recorded at a time by one DigiTrainer. ACCELERATION The acceleration of the boat in all three dimensions will be recorded when the stop watch is running. The collected data provides important information about the performance and technique of the athlete. Note: Stroke rate information will still be available (but will not be recorded) during training even if this option is turned off. GPS Provides accurate speed, distance and geographical location data using the Global Position Systems satellite network. All data is saved for further analysis. Flashing indicator: The GPS module is searching for satellites to get a position fix. The speed, position and distance values will not be correct until a valid fix has been achieved. The indicator will also flash if the GPS receiver looses track of the satellites during training. Once it locks on again, the indicator stops flashing. Indicator constantly on: The GPS module has a valid satellite lock, the speed, position, and distance calculations can commence. Note: Speed and distance functions will not operate in any mode if the module is turned off or does not have a valid satellite fix (flashing indicator). Note2: If there is no satellite lock for 10 minutes, the GPS module is turned off to save power. If it is turned on again, it will try to get a fix again within 10 minutes.

Note3: The GPS only works outdoors with a clear view of the sky. Tall buildings, bridges, tunnels, mountains and other large objects can block the GPS signals, which can prevent the GPS module from getting a valid position fix. (See section 10. for more information.) BLUETOOTH The module provides a real-time link between a PC (running the TechniqueStudio software) and DigiTrainer, which makes it possible for the coach to monitor the performance and the technique of the athlete during training and make corrections immediately. Flashing indicator: Waiting for connection request from PC. Indicator constantly on: Connection to PC established, data is being sent when the stopwatch is running. Note: Data is sent only while the stop watch is running. Note2: The heart rate module should only be turned on after the PC is connected to DigiTrainer (the Bluetooth indicator is constantly on). In the bottom left corner of the screen the amount of free space in the data file is shown in kilobytes(kB). Underneath the estimated available record time is shown in minutes, base on the selected modules. DigiTrainer calculates how many minutes of data can be stored in the given free space with the selected module configuration. If the data file is full, a warning message will appear, but the device will continue to work as usual without recording any data. The collected data can be downloaded and erased from DigiTrainer using the TechniqueStudio software. The maximum size of the data file is approximately 980MB.

8. PARTNER
This is the virtual partner mode, where the athlete can compete against a preprogrammed partner. Using the TechniqueStudio software, many different training partners can be generated with arbitrary speed curves, thus any competitors typical performance can be simulated. This enables the athlete to learn a pre-designed racing strategy or practice racing against one of his/her competitors. Maximum 16 different partners can be uploaded onto DigiTrainer at once. The athlete can choose a partner from the partner menu:

Stopwatch Current speed in kilometers/hour, miles/hour, or meters/second Current pace over 500/1000/2000 meters Distance traveled in meters (km) or yards (miles) Current stroke rate Current heart rate (only when using the provided chest strap sensor) Current time (provided by the GPS module, see section 10.)

After loading the partner by pressing the screen is displayed:

button the following

Note: The internal clock may drift considerably if the GPS module is not used or the device is not turned on for longer periods. The clock is always set to the correct time when the GPS module gets a valid position fix.

button prior to start. The The partner should be reset using the remaining distance counts down to zero as the athlete completes the course independent of the partners position. The LEAD shows the athletes position compared to the virtual partner: 20m means the athlete is 20 meters ahead of the partner. A negative value indicates that the athlete is behind. A virtual course is also displayed in the centre of the screen where the top boat is the athlete, and the lower boat is the virtual partner. The vertical dashed lines are the 50m buoys which move according to the actual speed. At any given moment, the lead boat may reach a certain point on the right side of the screen. In this case the other boat is positioned relative to the leading boat. The screen can display about 70m of the course, so if one boat falls back more than 60 meters, it will no longer be displayed on the screen. The race can be started by pressing the button. This will initiate a 5 second countdown which allows time for the athlete to set up for the start. When the countdown finishes a sound is played, the stopwatch starts and the virtual partner takes off. Just like in the SPEED DISP or MULTI DATA mode, the data recording (and possibly the Bluetooth transfer) is active while the stopwatch is running. When the remaining distance reaches zero the stopwatch is stopped, a sound is played and the virtual partner is also frozen, thus the athlete can see by how much he/she beat the virtual competitor. (If the virtual partner beat the athlete, the LEAD distance will be zero at the finish.) The race can be stopped at any time (except during the countdown) by pressing the button. Each race is recorded as a separate session in the devices memory. The race can be reset after stopping the stopwatch by pressing the button.

9. GRAPH
This mode displays the forward/backward direction accelerometer data in a graph form together with the stroke rate in real time. Looking at the shape of the curves during slow/moderate technique training can help the athletes discover and correct false movements.

10. GPS INFO

This mode displays the GPS-related data:

11. ACCEL. INFO

This mode visualizes the acceleration data of all three axes (up/down(X), right/left(Y), forward/backward(Z)). The acceleration of the three axes is displayed in the top left corner of the screen in g units. (g 9.81m/s2) If the DigiTrainer is placed on a fixed level surface, the only acceleration should be the Earths gravitational force, so the line with the circle on the end should point straight down:

GPS TIME: Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) the following +/number indicates the time zone setting (See section 12. for more information.) FIX: valid or invalid The following number corresponds to the position calculation state. 4 indicates the best calculation conditions. When the fix is invalid, speed and position data is incorrect. HDOP: Horizontal Dilution Of Precision (smaller value = more precise position, ideal = 1) ERR: estimated position error in meters (Not available in DigiTrainer 2.0) SPEED: speed over ground in meters per second (m/s) HEIGHT: altitude over mean sea level in meters HEADING: course heading in degrees (0 = North, 180 = South) The heading data is correct only when moving. USED SATELLITES: number of satellites used in the current position calculations. In order to have 3D position data, a minimum of 4 satellites must be used. LATITUDE: geographic latitude in decimal degrees (negative means South) LONGITUDE: geographic longitude in decimal degrees (negative means West)

If the device is tilted, the acceleration vector will change. The end point of the line with the circle on the end will move according to the X and Y acceleration values. The diameter of the circle is proportional to the acceleration on the Z axis. This information helps to set the precise position when mounting the DigiTrainer on a boat. (See section 17. for more information.) Note: After charging, when the DigiTrainer is still warm, there can be a small offset of the acceleration values, which disappears once the device cools to room temperature.

14. Battery
DigiTrainer has an internal battery which cannot be removed. Charging is done via the docking station using the provided power adaptor or by connecting to a computer. (See next section.) When charging with the power adapter, the BAT. LED on the front panel is constantly on. When the DigiTrainer is connected to a computer the LED will flash constantly, the battery is charged from the computers USB port while data transfer can still take place. If power is connected when the device is turned off, USB/CHARGE will be displayed on the screen. The battery indicator in the bottom right hand corner of the screen displays the battery charge level in a bar graph fashion:

When the battery indicator flashes the charge level is very low. At this level correct operation cannot be guaranteed. Charging time of an empty battery is approximately 6-8 hours. If the battery is completely drained, the device will not turn on until a sufficient charge level is reached. The device may be charged for longer periods without damage. During charging the DigiTrainer may get warm. Charge the device in a well ventilated place such as a flat desktop, away from direct sunlight or radiating heat. Battery life is 10-15 hours based on usage. To prevent damage to the battery, the device needs to be charged at least once every 2-3 months.

16. Everyday use and maintenance

DigiTrainer is designed for everyday use by athletes. The device is protected against rain and splashing water which is naturally part of paddling and rowing sports. To ensure correct operation, the following rules need to be obeyed: DigiTrainer was not designed to work underwater, do not submerge. Should the DigiTrainer accidentally fall into the water it will stay afloat without sustaining any damage. Do not subject the instrument to mechanical shock. Do not leave the DigiTrainer in direct sunlight or near radiating heat sources. Always wipe the connector plates dry on the back of the device to prevent corrosion. Always wipe the device dry before inserting it into the docking station. Keep the docking station dry at all times. Do not place metallic items (keys, coins, etc.) into the docking station which could short circuit the connectors. When not in use, store the DigiTrainer in the provided carrying pouch to protect it from mechanical damage. When necessary, clean with a damp cloth, possibly using a mild detergent.

17. Mounting guidelines

Since the DigiTrainer measures performance through the movement of the boat, it is very important to mount it correctly in order to obtain accurate measurements. DigiTrainer should be mounted on the boat as pictured below. It is very important to place the instrument so the base is level with the forward movement axis! The instrument should also be placed directly on the longitudinal center line of the boat. (The distance to the left and right side of the boat should be equal.)

Improper mounting:

15

August 14 2011

DigiTrainer users manual

ver. 2.00

DigiTrainer is shipped with mounting accessories for kayak, canoe and rowing:

The instrument should always be mounted using the provided rubber docking cup and the U-shaped steel plate, which can be bolted to either one of the polycarbonate mounting bases or the steel plate provided for rowing boats. Use two small screws and nuts to assemble the docking cup.

It is recommended to use the suction cups to mount the base onto a kayak: Loosen the suction cup screw caps, place the base onto the boat, press the cups firmly onto the boat and tighten the screw caps. It is very important that the boat is clean, smooth and free of any dust. To maximize the suction, put a few drops of water under the suction cups before placing them onto the boat.

16

August 14 2011

DigiTrainer users manual

ver. 2.00

For mounting onto a canoe or a wider multi-crew boat, the long polycarbonate base plate can be used. It can be mounted using the suction cups, or by using the provided quick straps:

When used on a rowing shell, DigiTrainer can be mounted onto the provided L-shaped steel plate, which can be fastened to the foot plate using the provided screws. Note: Due to the large variety of boat shapes, the mounting plates might not fit all boat types perfectly. However the polycarbonate plates can be bent to the correct shape by heating with a blowtorch or heat gun. When altering the shape, make sure that the base is level with the water when mounted onto the boat. (See the beginning of this section for details.) When mounted properly, with the athlete sitting in the boat on the water, the ACCEL DATA view should look like this:

The Y and Z values should be as close to zero as possible, the X value is not important in this case. If the device cannot be positioned to get the picture above (because of boat geometry for example) DigiTrainer can still be used and the stroke rate measurement will still work, but there may be errors in the charts. Note: If the device temperature is too high (after battery charging for example) a slight zero level offset error may appear. In this case DigiTrainer will operate normally, but the recorded acceleration data will not be correct. If precise measurements are needed, let the device cool down before use.

17

August 14 2011

DigiTrainer users manual

ver. 2.00

DigiTrainer should be placed into the rubber cup in such a way, that the U-shaped steel plate slides into the two holes on the bottom of the device:

Although DigiTrainer floats on the water, the mounting base does not, thus it is recommended to secure the base to the boat using the provided safety lanyard. Connect one end to the polycarbonate base through one of the small holes and connect the other end to the boat:

Press firmly until DigiTrainer is seated all the way into the rubber cup. (see picture below) The fit needs to be tight enough to hold the instrument when turned upside-down. Slight adjustment (bending) of the plate might be necessary.

Replacement parts can be ordered from Polaritas Ltd. See section 22. for contact information.
