YOU SPIN ME RIGHT ROUND

BY ROMMYNA DE LEEUW
I designed this retro-funky cushion when I realized that the pile of square cushions resting on my box full of LP record-albums were feeling the groove too! I entwined the tunes with the yarn to bring a little bit of the style from those glorious vinyl decades to the living room. You can personalize the label on each cushion you make with your favorite album titles. What better to rest upon than a heap LP cushions after dancing to your favorite grooves?

CRAFT Crochet DIFFICULTY Beginner MATERIALS Yarn Nashua Creative Focus Superwash (50% merino, 50% wool; 218 yds[200m]/3.5 oz[100 gm]); CYCA 4: #36 red (A), 1 skein; #30 black (B), 2 skeins. Note: Yarn amounts called for are for making one pillow top with a fabric back. If a reversible pillow is desired, increase color B by one skein. Beginning with Rnd 15, each round will be joined and turned at the end of each rnd, continuing through the last rnd. STITCH GUIDE Magic Ring: Make a large loop by putting yarn tail behind the working yarn, leaving a few inches. Insert hook into circle from the front and pull up a loop of working yarn, work a ch st. Work the indicated number of sts into the ring. At the end of the first rnd, gently pull yarn tail to close off opening and secure the tail to the inside of work. INSTRUCTIONS CUSHION TOP With smaller hook and color A, make a magic ring. Rnd 1: Work 10 sc into ring. Place stitch marker in last st to mark end of rnd, and move it at the end of each rnd. Rnd 25: Change to smaller hook, repeat rnd 21. (144 sts) Rnds 26-28: Repeat rnd 15, end off color B. FINISHING If desired, cushion may be made reversible by making a second piece in the same manner as the first. It is recommended to make a pillow form for the inside, so that the stuffing does not show through the stitches. Cut 2 pieces of fabric _ larger in diameter than the crocheted pillow top, and sew together, leaving a 4 opening for stuffing. Stuff and sew closed. Sew buttons to centers of pillow tops, and if desired, embroider your album label letters in the center. With RS facing, sew 2 pillow tops together, leaving an opening large enough to insert pillow form. Turn right side out, insert pillow form, and sew closed. If making a pillow with a crocheted top and fabric back, make pillow form as described for the reversible pillow, and stitch embellished pillow top to the top of the pillow form.
