Lauren Bates Driftwood Art Lesson Plan Grade Level: 8 Task Description: Driftwood travels in water from one

location to another until it finally comes to a resting place. Driftwood has a timeless appeal and many beachgoers see driftwood as beautiful pieces of art. The students will choose a piece of driftwood and then paint the wood to show what subject they see in the wood. Goals:
I. Creating Works of Visual Art. The student will demonstrate competence in the

use of ideas, materials, techniques, and processes in the creation of works of visual arts. II. Using Structures and Functions. The student will use composition and the elements and principles of design to communicate ideas. III. Exploring Content. The student will examine the content of works of visual art and use elements from them in creating his or her own works. IV. Interpreting Works of Visual Arts. The student will analyze and assess the characteristics and qualities of his or her own works of visual art and of others.

Objectives: 1. Students will learn about different uses of driftwood and how it is formed from natural elements. (SC: I. VA8-1.1) 2. The student will safely and responsibly use his/her paint palette and paintbrushes. This will allow them to create a design using their imagination. (SC: I. VA8-1.4) 3. The student will add this painting to their artwork folder, which contains the rest of their artwork from the semester. (SC: V. VA85.3) 4. The student will invision his/her own unique design in the wood and paint the subject matter. (SC: I. VA8-1.1) 5. Students will view each others work and discuss the idea behind how they painted their piece of wood. They will describe their work to the class using appropriate vocabulary. (SC: II. VA8-2.1) 6. The student will compare their artwork to that Lee Arthur(SC: VA8 3.4) Time: The lesson should take two 50-minute class periods. The first class the students will view the PowerPoint on the artist Lee Arthur. They will choose a piece of driftwood from the pile, and begin to paint their subject. The second class the students will finish painting their driftwood piece. Materials and Tools: Driftwood Tempera paint (primary and secondary colors)

Visuals and Resources: Teacher Sample Driftwood images Previous student work (if available) Pictures of Lee Arthurs artwork Web: http://www.keelsart.com/Ebb%20and%20flow%20lee.htm Vocabulary: Driftwood Abstract Organic Shape Static Background and/or Instructional Content: The teacher will show a PowerPoint presentation that details the artwork of Lee Arthur. The teacher will also show images of painted driftwood art including his/her own sample project. The teacher will check that the students understand the objectives of the project. The students will then create their own driftwood painted sculpture. The students will complete their projects in a timely manner and the projects will be displayed in the classroom. Procedures: Part I: Overview of Lesson 1. Teacher will present a PowerPoint presentation detailing Lee Arthur and driftwood art sculptures. 2. To prepare for the lesson the teacher will create a sample project and check out visual aids from the library such as books and posters. The teacher will display driftwood artwork images on the display screen at the front of the classroom. All materials and tools will be out on the tables for students to use. 3. The students will be motivated by the idea that they can create

whatever design they choose. They will be allowed to use their imagination and paint whatever subject matter they see in the form of the wood. Part II: Criteria for Grading 1. Choose a piece of driftwood from the pile. 2. Paint the driftwood to show what form you see in the wood. 3. Show respect for classmates by only using your paint palette and paintbrush.

Part III: Sequential Description of Steps

Day 1
Step: Teacher Preparation: Create sample project using tempera paints. Prepare PowerPoint slide show to be shown at the beginning of class detailing the art of Lee Arthur and driftwood art. The students will be shown Lee Arthur examples on the projection screen and personal samples from the instructor to be displayed in class. Step 1: Prepare PowerPoint slide show to be shown at the beginning of class detailing the art of Lee Arthur and driftwood art. Step 2: Tell the students they will be designing their own sculpture basedon the form they see in the wood. Step 3: The students will begin painting his/her driftwood sculpture using tempera paint.

Day 2
Step 4: The student will continue to paint his/her driftwood art sculpture. Step 5: The student will allow the painting to dry and will clean up all materials.

Clean-Up:

The students will need 5 mins at the end of each class to clean up all materials. 1. Assign each student a tool to collect and/or clean. 2. Have each student place his or her sculptures in the appropriate drying area. 3. Each student will collect his or her assigned tool and place in the proper area. 4. Each group table will clean their workspace and wipe down their table. 5. Students will wash their hands.

Evaluation: (See attached grading rubric) Grading Rubric aligned with objectives and criteria. Criteria: Paint the driftwood to show the subject matter you see in the wood form. Effectively demonstrate visually an understanding of organic sculpture. Uses two or more colors. Show respect for your classmates by only using your paint palette and paintbrush.

Accommodations: This lesson can be done with most students. If a student has difficulty holding the paintbrush the resource officer can assist. The student can tell the resource officer which colors they want to use for the project.

Extensions: The teacher could extend this lesson by doing driftwood sculpture and adding found objects in nature.
