1. (a) What are the important uid properties? Write their units. Derive the equation of hydrostatic pressure variation. (b) Find the kinematic viscosity in stokes for a liquid with specic gravity 0.95 and dynamic viscosity 0.011 poise. [10+6] 2. (a) Discuss the assumptions made in the derivation of Bernoullis equation from fundamentals. (b) Discuss at least one application of each of the following: i. Continuity equation ii. Momentum equation iii. Bernoullis equation.

[8+8]

3. (a) Dene major and minor losses. Why are minor losses named so? List dierent minor losses and write the required equations. (b) A pitot tube is placed at the centre of a pipe of 0.30 m diameter carrying water. The water raises to a height of 0.25m above the centre line of pipe in the vertical limb of the tube. The static pressure head at the center of the pipe is 0.2m. Find the velocity at the centre if the coecient of the tube is 0.96. [8+8] 4. (a) A nozzle of 56 mm diameter delivers a stream of water at 30 m/sec perpendicular to a plate that moves away from the jet at 8 m/sec. Find the work done and eciency of the jet. (b) Prove that the force exerted by a jet of water on a xed curved vane when the jet strikes at the centre is F = av2 (1+cos) where = Mass density of water a = Area of cross section of the jet v = Velocity of the jet = Angle of the curved plate at the out let. [8+8] 5. (a) Discuss the relative merits and demerits of hydropower as compared to other power sources. (b) Describe how water power potential is estimated before any power plant is contemplated. [8+8] 6. (a) What do you mean by gross head, net head and eciency of a turbine? Explain the dierent types of the eciencies of a turbine. 1 of 2

(b) A Pelton wheel has a mean bucket speed of 35 m/s with a jet of water owing at the rate of 1 m3 /s under a head of 270 m. The buckets deect the jet through an angle of 1700 . Calculate the power delivered to the runner and the hydraulic eciency of the turbine. Assume co-ecient of velocity as 0.98.[16] 7. (a) Dene the term Governing of a turbine. Describe with a neat sketch the working of an oil pressure governor (b) A Kaplan turbine working under a head of 29 m develops 1287.5 kW S.P. If the speed ratio is equal to 2.1, ow ratio = 0.62, diameter of boss = 0.34 times the diameter of the runner and overall eciency of the turbine = 89%, nd the diameter of the runner and the speed of turbine. [8+8] 8. (a) What is the dierence between single-stage and multistage pumps? Describe multistage pump with i. impellers in parallel, and ii. impellers in series. (b) The diameter of an impeller of a centrifugal pump at inlet and outlet are 30 cm and 60 cm respectively. The velocity of ow at outlet is 2.5 m/s and vanes are set back at an angle of 450 at outlet. Determine the minimum starting speed of the pump if the manometric eciency is 75%. [8+8]
