1. (a) What is meant by residual magnetism? Also explain the role of it on open circuit characteristics of dc generator. (b) A short shunt compound dc generator supplies a current of 100 A at a voltage of 220 V. If the resistance of the shunt eld is 50 ohms, of the series eld is 0.025 ohms, of the armature is 0.05 ohms, the total brush drop is 2 V and the iron and friction losses amount to 1 kW, nd: i. ii. iii. iv. the the the the generated emf copper losses input of the prime mover driving the generator and generator eciency.

2. (a) Explain the method used to control the speed of a dc shunt motor above the rated speed. (b) Explain the test to be conducted to nd the constant losses of a dc motor. [8+8] 3. (a) Draw the phasor diagram of a transformer on: i. no load and ii. full load with leading p.f. (b) An ideal transformer having 90 turns on the primary and 2250 turns on the secondary is connected to 220V, 50Hz supply. The load across the secondary draws a current of 2A at a p.f of 0.8 lagging. Calculate i. the value of primary current and ii. the peak value of the ux linked with the secondary. Draw the phasor diagram. [8+8] 4. (a) Explain the various losses that occur in a transformer and explain how they vary with i. supply frequency and ii. load on the transformer. (b) The eciency of 500kVA, 200/400V, 50Hz transformer is 98% at half full load 0.8 p.f and 98.5% at full load unity p.f. Determine 1 of 2

(a) Explain the development of a rotating magnetic eld in a 1- induction motor. (b) A 230V, 50Hz, 4 pole, class A, 1- induction motor has the following parameters at an operating temperature of 630 C. Rim=2.51 ohm; R2 =7.81ohms; Xm=150.88ohms; Xim=4.62 ohms;X2 =4.02ohms. Determine the stator main winding current and power factor when the motor is running at a slip of 0.05 at specied temperature of 63 0 C. [5+11] 8. Explain why PMMC instruments are the most widely used instruments. Discuss their advantage and disadvantages. [16]
