Introduction and benefits of

1. An introduction:
Indian Railway run diIIerent type oI train services, among them local train is
an important one; it is one oI the vital public transport medium in diIIerent
metro cities and other cities in India. Railway companies consider it as a
most non proIitable service but it has a great impact on the daily liIe. Mainly
local train connects suburbs to the main city. The Iamous local train service
in India is Mumbai local train service; the system carries more than 6.9
million commuters on a daily basis. It has one oI the highest passenger
densities oI any urban railway system in the world.

1.2. Benefits of local train journey
1.2. a. Aot so expensive:
The Iare oI local train is cheap as compared with the other public
transport media all class people oI society can avail it. During the
recent time when all other public transport media increase their Iare
due to the hike oI Iuel, the Iare oI local train remains same. That`s
why there is explosion oI commuter in local train in recent time.

1.2. b. Safe and comfortable journey:
The journey oI local train is considered as saIe and comIortable with
respect to the other public transport journey. Due to the bad condition
oI diIIerent road during the monsoon, local train is then a good option
Ior the common people to go their destination. In the recent years
overtake between the buses are increased signiIicantly, which causes
the road journey becomes risky. With respect to that point local train
journey is much saIer.

1.2. c. on time schedule:


II all the technical part oI the whole system is ok, you can reach your
destination on time. That`s why most oI the daily passengers like
oIIice goers; students take the local train as a transport medium to
reach their oIIice. Due to the jam & traIIic congestion the road
journey between the main city and suburbs takes much more time than
the local train.

1.2. d. Uniform service throughout the year:
In all other public transport medium the quality oI service may varies
due to diIIerent reason. You may experience it more specially on
Sunday, when the availability oI bus, taxies etc are much less than the
general working days, But the availability oI local train almost same
as like the working days.

2.1 Delayed service:
Delay is one oI the main problems to the Indian Railway. It is not only Ior
the local train service, but also in other rail service. This is mainly because
Ior the technical problem, like signaling problem, track problem, wreck
shortage etc.Due to delay the pressure oI crowd increase on a train which
makes the whole journey oI the commuters to a discomIort.

2.2vercrowded:
In the recent time the passengers oI local train have been increasing
dramatically Ior many reasons (like low Iare).but the current system is not
prepared to mange this huge crowd. We can classiIy the eIIect oI it in two
categories.

2.2.1 1o the system:
The number oI ticket counters has been remaining same Ior the
last 10-15 years. It is very common scenario that passengers
miss their train Ior buying the ticket Irom the ticket counter in
big junction station. The platIorms oI the most stations are not
designed to make place Ior this huge crowd and most oI the
platIorms are lost their place by the illegal hawkers. The
railway authority knows this very well but they are unable to
take any action Ior the political reason.

2.2.2 1o the train:
The number oI wrecks remains almost same, but the number
passengers are increased. As well as the condition oI the most
oI the current wrecks is poor. Though the railway authority try

to introduce new wrecks, but their eIIort is signiIicantly less as


compared to the practical condition. Due to the shortage oI
wrecks railway authority can`t increase the number oI local
train in diIIerent division, section to cope up with this situation.

2.3Becomes more accident porn:

Due to lack oI maintenances and use oI older technology in the railway
system the journey oI local train is not saIer. That`s why service is hampered
Frequently and sometimes it cause to death oI people.


2.4Security problem:

Railway authority only concern about the security oI express train, mail
train. But in the recent time the various type oI social crime has increased in
the local train also. Pick pocketing was common thing in the pas time. But in
the recent time the robbery which is happened in diIIerent division even in
the daylight. The main reason behind oI this is lack oI railway police.

3.1 By increasing the number of wracks
enerally in most oI the rail way divisions in India the number oI wracks
per local train, with respect to the passengers are signiIicantly low. The
diIIerence between passengers and number racks are increasing day by day.
Railway authority already increase number oI racks in diIIerent divisions,
but the eIIort is not so with the current condition. Up gradation oI 8
compartments to 12 compartments is going in diIIerent railway division.
Due to some technical and other reasons this up gradation is not processing
quickly. II the railway authority does this with their best eIIort, the daily
passenger would train in local train with a little bit comIort.

3.2 By introducing properly designed coach
When the railway Iactories build the coach, they do not take the point oI
comIort oI passengers. The Iactory builds the coaches by designing the poor
ventilation system. The main problem is the ventilation which can be Ielt
during the rush hour when the train is Iully overcrowded. Proper designing
oI ventilation system may little relieI the thousands oI daily passengers Irom
their discomIort mainly in summer.

3.3 By increasing the number of train
Increasing the number oI local train in diIIerent railway divisions is one oI
the solutions to improvement the journey oI local train. Because oI
increasing compartment have some technical diIIiculties. Increasing the
number oI train results better comIort oI passengers. BeIore increasing the
trains, authority should build the proper inIrastructure to make it in
discipline.

3.4 By increasing the railway tracks
By increasing the railway track, railway authority can run more number oI
trains during the oIIice hour. But increasing the tracks is not easy in current
time because oI land acquisition problem. Increasing the track in turn
increase the average speed oI local trains. By that the passengers can reach
their oIIice or destination quickly. Recently many local train routes is
upgraded to single line to double line & passengers have got the Iacilities in
those route.

3.5 Recruitment of technical posts
In order to run any public service system properly, you need man power.
Railway system is not out oI the rule. Currently there are large vacancies in
diIIerent technical posts (Drivers, guards, signal operator) oI Indian rail &
vacancy is about 90,000.Lack oI manpower disrupt the service & some time
become cause oI accident. Already we have seen that the railway ministers
introduce new local trains but the service oI the train are very poor because
lack oI technical staIIs.

3. Improvement of maintenance system
Maintenance system in local train is very poor. Many wrecks has even
expired their time period but still those are used .this is a saIety threat to the
passengers as most oI the time the compartments are overcrowded. The main
reason is the lack oI man power. In the railway car shade you can see that
the train compartments are kept without proper care. The wracks are not
examined every day. Due to lack oI gang-man railway tracks are not
examined every day which causes the slowing down train speed. That`s why
you can see many speed limiter boards beside the train line.

3.7 Proper implementation of railway time table
Many times the railway time table in diIIerent division is not worked
properly. The delay oI local train is a very common problem. The main
reason behind this delay is old signaling system, callousness oI technical
staII, rail roko etc. It is seen that iI the railway authority run the local trains
on proper time by their current inIrastructure, the journey oI local train
becomes improved a lot. To do this authority should deploy discipline, new
technology etc.

3.8 Use of modern technology
Indian use old manual signaling system, backdated interlocking system, and
poor communication system which help to communicate between technical
staIIs to run the whole system. You may have experience that beIore
entering into big junctions` station train halts 5 to 10 minutes because oI line
clearing problem. II rail way authority install anti-collision device in each
train, the problem oI line clearing can be reduced. Though two train come in
same line, it will be stopped by the anti- collision device. Automated system
should be introduced to eliminate human error.

3.9 Daily checking of tickets
Ticket checking has a very crucial impact on journey oI local train. It may
reduce the passengers without ticket and inspire them to buy ticket beIore
travelling in train which in turn increases the proIit oI rail way authority that
may inspire the railway authority to investment money to improve the
inIrastructure oI local train service.
