WV Wing assists Air National Guard with Thunder Over the Blue Ridge Air Show
By Major Jeffery Schrock Wing Public Affairs Officer

Civil Air Patrol Wings from Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia volunteered its assistance over the Labor Day Weekend to the West Virginia Air National Guard's 167th Airlift Wing as they hosted an open house and air show on September 4 - 5, 2010 in Martinsburg, W.Va. The group consisted of units from the Winchester Composite Squadron (Virginia), Hagerstown Composite Squadron (Maryland), and Charleston, Clarksburg, Martinsburg, and Mid Valley Squadrons (West Virginia Wing) Tens of thousands of people

were expected to attend, and state, local, and military police were prepared to accommodate the influx of visitors expected. Building on the success of the 2008 Spirit of America Over Martinsburg Air Show, the 167th Airlift Wing, along with the Eastern West Virginia Regional Airport, and the United Way of the Eastern Panhandle, brought together some of the nation's most exciting aerial demonstration teams which included the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and the U.S. Army Golden Knights. Various military and civilian aircraft and aviation themed exhibits were also on hand.

Civil Air Patrol set up a recruitment booth which featured a 1940 restored Stinson airplane used in CAP coastal patrols to search for German U-Boats, and a CAP Cessna 182. The highlight at the end of the air show was when CAP had the extreme pleasure to meet Lt Col Derek Routt, operations officer for the USAF Thunderbirds. Routt stopped by the recruitment booth and later took cadets and senior officers to one of the F-16 aircraft used by the Thunderbirds. A group photo with Routt was also taken. Wheeling Composite Squadron tours Direct TV Blimp

By Lt Toni Wheeler Wheeling Squadron PAO

Four cadets and three senior officers from the Civil Air Patrol Wheeling Composite Squadron were treated to a surprise Aerospace Education field trip when the Direct TV promotional blimp made an overnight stop at the Wheeling-Ohio County Airport on August 23. The blimp flying down from Cincinnati, Ohio was traveling to the PGA Open and landed because of weather concerns and availability of an airport

that could service it. The cadets were given a tour by Jim Siverston, a member of the Direct TV Blimp ground crew. Cadets gain knowledge on airship construction, how the blimp is controlled in flight, the necessary size of the ground and air crews, and had a close up look of the mechanism that allows lettering to be displayed on the blimp. The blimp was first spotted by Lt Jeff Wheeler, AE officer, on his way to a scheduled squadron meeting. Wheeler arrived at the

airport early and made arrangements for the squadron. This blimp visit is serendipitous, said Wheeler. Our cadets are participating in the NASA Environmentally Responsible Green Aviation High School Student Challenge, and the concept that our cadets came up with a few weeks ago is a dirigible. Its one thing to see a blimp on paper or in a video, but its another thing to stand next to it while is sways in the wind.
