Can any chemist students or teacher help me with this synthesis in laymans terms ?

[1-pentyl indole from indole and 1-pentyl chloride] Suspend indole, 1-pentyl chloride, and potasium hydride in three seperate soluti ons in THF. You'll add the 1-pentyl chloride to the indole solution dropwise ver y slowly while its being magnetically stirred. Once you've added all of the pota sium hydride you'll have this continue to stir for another 30 minutes and then a dd the 1-pentyl chloride and have it stir for just about another hour or so. You 'll evaporate the THF and scrape up the unpurified powder for use in the next st ep. [1-pentyl-3-(1-naphthoyl)indole from 1-pentyl indole and 1-naphthoyl chloride] Suspend 1-pentyl indole, methylmagnesium chloride, and 1-naphthoyl chloride in T HF in three seperate solutions. You'll add dropwise the methylmagnesium chloride into the 1-pentyl indole solution while being magnetically stirred. Once you've added all of the methylmagnesium chloride solution into the 1-pentyl indole sol tuion, you'll continue to stir this solution for 30 minutes then add the 1-napht hoyl chloride solution and continue to stir for another hour. [Extraction and purification of 1-pentyl-3-(1-naphthoyl)indole] At this point you can acidify this with HCL, extract with dichloromethane, wash with sodium bicarbonate, dry with magnesium sulfate, and evaporate the solvent t o give the crude product which can further be purified with chromatography (petr oleum ether/ethyl acetate, 9:1). * 2 years ago * Report Abuse Misty by Misty Member since: January 14, 2010 Total points: 156 (Level 1) * Add Contact * Block Best Answer - Chosen by Voters This is an illegal substance. And if you don't understand the terms involved in chemical synthesis you definitely shouldn't be messing around with chemicals on your own. * 2 years ago * Report Abuse 100% 1 Vote There are currently no comments for this question. * You must be logged into Answers to add comments. It is hard to understand, because they say to add the pentyl chloride to the indole solution. But after adding the potassium hydride, they say to add the pentyl chloride. "Suspend" is unnecessary, because all of the species are soluble in the so lvents. You may have trouble making methylmagnesium, chloride, so I recommend ma king methylmagnesium bromide or iodide instead. The rest of the prep is staightforward. o 2 years ago o Report Abuse 0% 0 Votes * Robert by Robert Member since: May 13, 2008 Total points: 244 (Level 1) o Add Contact o Block The potassium hydride is a very strong base which can remove the proton fr om the indole nitrogen, allowing it to be alkylated by pentyl chloride. Then you acylate in the second step. In layman's terms, just forget about it. You have to know how to dry THF, and everything has to be done under argon gas because potassium hydride ignites on contact with air, and THF is very flammable. You do not even learn the proper techniques to do this kind of chemistry i n a 4 year undergraduate college program. You certainly will not do it in a base ment, assuming you could get the materials, which you can't. It is a lot simpler to just score a bag of weed. o 2 years ago o Report Abuse
