Differentiate unit operations and unit processes with examples. Discuss applications of transport phenomenon principles in bioprocessing. What is an equation of state? Write about ideal gas equation and its applications. A 150 lt oxygen cylinder contains gas at 300 K and 10 bar. What is the mass of oxygen in the cylinder? Derive the barometric equation. State assumptions made. A pump draws a solution of S.G 1.84 from a storage tank through a 75 mm schedule 40 steel pipe. The efficiency of the pump is 60 percent. The velocity in the suction line is 0.914 m/s. The pump discharges through a 50 mm. schedule 40 pipe to an overhead tank. The end of the discharge pipe is 15.2 m above the level of the solution in the feedback. Friction losses in the entire piping system are 29.9 J/kg. What pressure must the pump develop? Given data: The cross sectional areas of the 75 mm and 50 mm pipes are 4.766x10-3 m2 and 2.165x10-3 m2 respectively. State the Newtons law of viscosity. Write about different types of non Newtonian fluids with examples in bioprocessing. Describe with a neat schematic diagram, construction and working of coaxial cylinder viscometer. Explain the concept of boundary layer with the help of a neat diagram. Water is flowing at 100C through a horizontal plastic pipe 75 mm in inside diameter at a velocity of 2.44 m/s. The pressure drop per 30 m of pipe is 19.50 kN/m2. Calculate viscosity of water at 100C. Density of water is 999 kg/m3 at 100C. Derive pressure drop expression for flow through bed of solids. Particles of sphalerite (specific gravity 4.00) are settling under force of gravity in carbon tetra chloride (CCl4) at 200C (specific gravity 1.594). The diameter of the sphalerite particles is 0.004 inches. The volume fraction of the sphalerite in CCl4 is 0.20. What is the setting velocity of the sphalerite? Given that viscosity of CCl4 at 200C is 1.03 cP. How leakage around moving parts is prevented in process equipments? Explain with schematic diagrams. Water flows through an orifice of 25 mm diameter situated in a 75 mm diameter pipe, at a rate of 300x10-6 m3/s. What will be the difference in level on a water manometer connected across the meter? The viscosity of water is 1 m Ns/m2. Take CD=0.61. Discuss classification of pumps. 2.16 m3/hr of water at 320 K is pumped through a 40 mm id pipe, thorugh a length of 150 m in a horizontal direction, and up through a vertical height of 10 m. In the pipe there are a control valve, equivalent to 100 pipe diameters and other pipe fittings equivalent to 30 pipe diameters. Assuming the pipe has a roughness of 0.0002 m, what power must be supplied to the pump if it is 60% efficient. At 320 K =0.65 mNs/m2, S=1000kg/m3. Take Fanning friction factor as 0.008. *****
