Introduction The PIARC Programme of International Seminars is intended to provide a platform for information exchange within the transportation industry, in particular to identify the needs of developing countries and countries with economies in transition. The ITS in Network Operations Seminar is under the PIARC Technical Committee 1.4 which covers Governance and Management of the Road System - Management of Network Operations.

Seminar objective(s) It is intended that the seminar will provide an insight on current best practice internationally with respect to the utilization of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) in road network operations as part of an Integrated Transport System. This will serve as a benchmark for further development of ITS usage in network operations within the region. Seminar Format The seminar will be held over 3 days and will comprise four technical sessions, a workshop session and a field trip. 2 days for the Technical Sessions and Workshop 1 day for a Field Trip An exhibition will also be held in conjunction with the Seminar. 1. Technical Sessions There will be 4 Technical Sessions with a total of 15 Technical Papers to be presented. 1. 2. 3. 4. Technical Session 1 - New ideas for network operations Technical Session 2 - Information management and the public interest Technical Session 3 - Appropriate use of ITS for an Integrated Transport System Technical Session 4 Challenges in Implementing ITS

Each technical session will be presided over by a chairperson. The speakers will present his/her paper based on the session topic, followed by a Discussion/Question & Answer session. The chairperson will summarise the main conclusions at the end of each session. 2. Workshop Session The workshop session will follow on from the four technical sessions. The session will be divided into several topic-specific workshops for more in-depth group discussions. Each workshop will be presided over by a chairperson. 3. Field Trip The field trip will provide participants with an overview of the current usage of ITS in network operations in Malaysia. The venue of the visit will be advised in due course. 4. Exhibition In conjunction with the Seminar, an exhibition showcasing ITS technologies and products will be held. Exhibition booths will be available for interested parties. Since the number of booths is limited, allocation will be on a first-come first-served basis.

Participants Everyone involved in the transportation industry, including roads and traffic authorities, academicians, researchers, concessionaires, asset operators, project managers, consultants, contractors, suppliers, etc.

Languages The official language for the Seminar will be English.

Call for Papers Technical papers are invited for the seminar presentation and publication. Guidelines for Abstract Preparation

Abstract should be prepared in Microsoft Word document using Times New Roman, 9-point font. The abstract must be in TEXT only without graphs, tables or illustrative material. Abstract with no longer than 500 words (excluding title and authors details) must be written in English. Abstract should be structured as follows:

Titles of abstract (15 words or less). Names of all authors (underline the name of presenting author). Institutions, addresses and e-mail addresses. Content of abstract should contain brief introductory statement of the presentation and conclusion. Keywords

All abbreviations used should be explained. It is recommended that a minimum number of abbreviations be used in the abstract. Biography of the presenting author must accompany the abstract Deadline:

All abstract submission must be done through e-mail by 15th March 2006. Abstracts should be sent to: PHHO@jkr.gov.my (PIARC International Seminar Secretariat) Notification of accepted papers will be announced by mid-April 2006 Submission of full paper should be done by end of May 2006

PIARC Special Fund The PIARC Special Fund is available to help cover the expenses of participants from developing countries (lower middle income and low income countries). Assistance is limited to one participant per PIARC member country. An application for assistance from the Special Fund must be supported by the First Delegate to PIARC for that country, and should be sent to the PIARC Secretary General, e-mail: piarc@wanaboo.fr . If approved, the Special fund can cover up to 100% of travel expenses or up to 100% of accommodation expenses.. The rules relating to the use of the Special Fund are available on the PIARC web site: www.piarc.org, in the Blue Guide.
