We will be using our literature book frequently this year, so it is important that you become familiar
with it. Following are questions about the textbook, intermixed with questions about you. Both types
of questions are important. Complete the entire sheet (front & back). It is due before you leave class
today.

1. The Table of Contents shows the first section of our books looks at American literature
through 1800. The title of Collection I is Visions and Voyages.
2. Now scan over the titles under Collection I. What types of voyages do you think
the book is talking about? They are stories about people or animals traveling
places.

4. Collection 4 covers 1800 - ________ and is titled “American Romanticism.”

6. The collections contain a mixture of short stories, essays, journals, and
poetry. Many students don’t like poetry, but nearly everyone loves to
listen to music. What is the difference between modern music and poetry?
There is no difference because music has a beat and a rhythm but so does
poetry, if you put it in there.

7. Collections 9 and 10 are part of “The Rise of Realism.” This period, from 1850 –

17. Our book also has a lot of art and pictures. You know a picture can be worth a
