How to install Windows XP (Home and Pro)

Clean Install of Windows XP

The reason I chose to show you how to perform a clean install of windows instead
of an upgrade are because there are many reasons more why Windows XP will fail
on you!
Reasons to install Windows XP from scratch:

1. If you have Windows ME – ME is the worst operating system Microsoft ever

released. It was on the market for 6 months and was withdrawn due to the
amount of problems it caused. ME loves to mess up files and when you upgrade to
Windows XP it loves to corrupt and mess around with files during and upgrade
installation.

2. If you have a virus/spy ware then you’ll just get the same problem, but on a
larger scale. When the operating system is being installed the virus/spy ware WILL
self replicate and damage the OS from stage one. Which doesn’t solve your
problem, it only makes things harder for you, and eventually windows will start to
die due to the virus/spy ware.

3. You will experience no problems or conflicts when you are installing Windows
XP, as it is a clean install and no programs will conflict with the new operating
system. Thus preventing headaches and a massive snowball effect.

Making sure you system is of the required standards.

Before saying, “I want Windows XP”, I first have to ask why? Many times have I
been approached by people saying they want XP, but they only want it as it is the
new operating system, and think that their problem will disappear by getting a
new operating system. In the case of Windows ME, yes this will get rid of your
problem, a poor operating system, but sometimes it isn’t needed. But also people
think their computer will run faster as it has a new operating system. This is
totally false. Your system might be too old to run XP, it could even just scrape by
the minimum standards, but it still wont make you computer faster, it has the
adverse effect, it will make it slower.
So please go to these websites and check if your computer matches the required
specification, but make sure you computer doesn’t just scrape through else your
pc will become very slow and bulky.

Now I know there are various items which don’t work with Windows XP, so I would
check your product guide or even website to check for updated drivers, as
Windows doesn’t list the hardware which isn’t compatible anymore. So if you have
any worries that your product won’t work with Windows XP please contact the
product manufacturer.

The Installation

There are two ways on installing Windows XP; both ways require you to have your
Windows XP disc inserted into your computer. If you computer starts up and skips
the disc drive and goes straight into windows then you know it’s a bios error, and I
will explain how to fix this. If your computer hard drive has nothing on the drive
then it will automatically boot from the disc drive, making life easier. So you can
skip the next part about the BIOS and booting Windows XP from the CD

If your computer didn’t boot from the Windows XP disc then please follow these
steps.
When your computer starts you will see the BIOS screen, this is a black screen
with detailed information about the system internals.

If you don’t see this screen, you see a logo, press TAB or the ESC key; this should
close that logo and show you the BIOS.
Now to enter the BIOS(this varies from motherboard to motherboard) Press DEL or
F2, if these buttons don’t load up anything look around on that screen for press
(X) key to enter setup, or something similar.
When you enter the bios look for an option such as BOOT or Advanced Setup.
Look for boot order, and change it to
CD rom, Hard drive, Floppy.
Then press ESC then select Save to Cmos and Exit, or Save and Exit. When
prompted to Press Y else your changes will not be accepted.

Your computer will now be restarted and it will search for the boot device, when
the Windows XP CD the following will happen.
The CD is being read in the drive and it will prompt the user to “PRESS “ANY KEY”
TO BOOT FROM CD”. Now beware the “ANY KEY” really does mean press ANY key
you want. If in doubt press SPACE or ENTER.

The Windows XP CD will start to load files required to run the setup screen and
other assorted actions. Please do not press any keys until the setup has loaded,
else you will be presented with RAID/SCSI drivers installation.

The setup will have loaded onto the infamous “Blue Screen”. You will have three
options available to you at this time. We are going to select “To set up Windows
XP now, press Enter”.
Press ENTER to access this setup.
You will next be presented with the EULA or End User Licence Agreement which
you must accept or your computer will simply reboot. If you want to read it by all
means read it, but I don’t feel the need to do this so simply PRESS F8 to accept
this or ESC if you want to stop the installation of Windows XP.

Next Windows Setup will show the partitions available to install Windows XP to. If
your hard drive is brand new then PRESS ENTER,
But if you have data already on the computer you need to delete this data. To
delete this select the partition and PRESS D, you will see a warning saying are you
sure you want to delete this partition, PRESS L to continue, once this is deleted it
will return you to the install Windows XP on this partition. PRESS ENTER to select
the partition.

Now you will be displayed with various options on how you want to install
Windows XP, with different Filing systems, NTFS and FAT32. I recommend NTFS, as
it is more secure and also allows larger files to be downloaded from the internet.
FAT32 has a limit of 2Gb, where NTFS has a much larger limit. So I recommend
NTFS.
For each choice, you will have “FORMAT THE PARTITION USING (NTFS/FAT32) FILE
SYSTEM”, then a choice of QUICK or BLANK, the BLANK means Longer version as it
properly formats each header and table in the hard drive, where as the quick one
does this quickly and skips parts.
PRESS ENTER on the choice, again I recommend the longer version as it will
properly format the hard drive.

After Windows has formatted the drive it will install the required files onto the
computer and reboot your computer for you automatically.
Now remember DON’T press any key when it says boot from CD, this is a costly
idea and can delay your setup.

The setup will automatically start when the boot from CD is ignored and it will
start the Windows XP Setup.

Windows will also ask you to select your Region and keyboard setup,
First we will change the regional settings, click CUSTOMIZE, a new box will appear
and you can change the Standards and Formats to your region. Change your
region from the drop down menu then change the Location to your location by
selecting this from the drop down menu. Click the Advanced tab and select your
region again from the drop down menu. Click APPLY then CLICK OK. Now we have
to change the Text Input Languages, click DETAILS to change the keyboard layout.
A new box will appear, again select your Default Input Language, then click apply,
then click the other region in the box and select REMOVE, this way you can never
change your keyboard settings, making it harder for your language settings to
change, thus causing less frustration to you. Click NEXT to continue

The Set-up will ask you to enter a registration name. Enter which name you find
appropriate and enter the Organisation name if you wish. Click NEXT to continue.

Next Windows will ask you for the PRODUCT-ID, this is the installation ID which
came with the Windows XP software, or is provided on the case of your computer.
Enter this and click NEXT to continue.

The installation will now ask you for a computer name. This name can be what
ever you decide. I commonly leave this as the default name Windows XP gave the
computer. Click NEXT to continue.

The installation will continue and ask you for your region of time zone, date and
time, select your time zone and click APPLY then OK. Click NEXT to continue.

Windows will start to install various products and files then it will prompt the user
for some more input about NETWORK SETTINGS, it is ok just to Press NEXT and
continue, as most users will not be setting up a network at this moment in time. In
the next box leave it as it is set and click NEXT.

Windows will now continue to install itself and will continue to install itself, then
windows will reboot the computer after it has set itself up.

When the computer restarts remove the Windows XP disc so you don’t
accidentally reinstall Windows XP again.

You will now be presented with the Windows XP boot up screen logo, Windows will
now prompt you to say it will Automatically readjust the screen resolution for you.
Click OK to continue. Windows will now ask you to verify if you can see this box at
this resolution, if you can click OK, but if you cant see anything just wait and
windows will revert back to the old settings.

Windows will now say Applying Computer settings then load up the Windows
WELCOME screen.

If you see a screen with a green hill and a blue start bar, then you have installed
Windows.

Congratulations. You have now installed Windows XP!.

Now its time to install an Antivirus, anti-spy ware tools, drivers for devices.

Have fun with your Windows XP.
