Presidents Column
Spandan is a cultural association which aims to provide a forum for all members of IISc who would like
to showcase their talents in different aspects of Bengali culture. Every year, Spandan organizes a number of cultural programmes including Freshers Welcome (Nobeen Baron), Bijaya Sommilanee, Banee Abahonee Sandhya, Saraswati Puja and Rabindra-Nazrul Sandhya. In these programmes, the students and faculty members (and their families) of IISc present songs, poems, instrumental music, dances, plays and other items which give the audience some glimpses of the vast universe of Bengali culture. All these programmes are open to everyone and they help to enrich the cultural atmosphere of our Institute. In addition to these programmes, Spandan brings out an annual magazine named Agdum-Bagdum which contains a variety of writings in Bengali. Since 2011 is the 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, Spandan organized a special programme in the month of May, 2011, in which Prof. Mohan Singh Khangura presented Rabindra Sangeet. Spandan has always tried its best to live up to the rich cultural heritage of Bengal. However culture in its true sense transcends the barrier of language. Hence it gives us great pleasure to see that Bengalis as well non-Bengalis take part equally in the events arranged by Spandan. Spandan feels proud to embody the spirit of national integration in this way. We sincerely hope that the activities of Spandan will continue to receive support and appreciation from everyone in the years to come.

Prof. Diptiman Sen President, SPANDAN Committee 2010-2011

General Secretarys Column

It is the civilization that adorns a human race with its external decoration and ornamentation, while
culture the inner soul of the race of the mankind enlightens its existence. In the words of Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, It takes centuries of traditions to build up a civilization and it takes centuries of civilizations to build up a culture. Culture is like the light of the morning, like the pure air of the mountains, so simple and so true. And when it is Indian culture, we are talking about, we must not forget the famous lines of Will Durant in his Story of Civilization Our Oriental Heritage that say, Mother India is, in many ways, the mother of us all. SPANDAN the Bengali Cultural Association of IISc is a vibrant entity which carefully nurtures the different facets of Bengali as well as Indian culture. From the beginning of its journey, around eighteen years back, its thriving presence is felt across all corners by virtue of its presentation of fragments from the rich cultural heritage of India. Like previous years, this year also Spandan has been involved in a lot of activities which, broadly speaking, consist of cultural events, publication of an annual magazine and general events, details of which are furnished in subsequent sections. Many of the talented individuals of IISc community presented their skills on these occasions celebrated by Spandan and to quote Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer, as the measure of their creation they had to do with the harmonization of what is new and what is familiar, with the balance between novelty and synthesis, with the struggle to make partial order in total chaos. The 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, one of the greatest exponents of the Indian culture, made this year especially significant to Spandan. Besides Tagores 150th birth anniversary, Spandan has also commemorated the 150th and 100th birth anniversaries of Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy, father figure in chemical research in modern India, and Mother Teresa, a personality who dedicated her life to the well-being of the poor and the destitute in Bengal, respectively. Spandan has also observed the 175th birth anniversary of Sri Ramakrishna, one of the greatest personalities in religion, philosophy and social reform and the great motivator of Girish Chandra Ghosh a key person in Bengali theatre renaissance. Apart from these, some other key contributions of the incumbent working committee towards the smooth sailing of Spandan can be summarized as below. Enhancement of the committees commitment towards the planning of cultural events staged by Spandan. Incorporation of the concept of thematically well-planned cultural programmes. Felicitation of the participants and contributors to the cultural events and the annual magazine respectively. Addition of a few events, major among them being Rabi-Pranaam a musical evening to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Tagore. Publication of coloured annual magazine with a professional look. Maintenance of Bengali books in Ranade Library and making accommodation of a few new shelves for them.

Arrangement and meticulous allocation of funds for the successful implementation of all the above-mentioned activities in 2010-2011. Continuous efforts to increase the collection of annual subscription. Strengthening the financial health of Spandan in spite of the sad occurrence of a sufficiently destabilizing accident and also the presence of a strong economic inflation. Attention to social welfare and spontaneous response on humanitarian grounds. Keeping in continuous touch with the well-wishers and patrons of the cultural events of Spandan and maintaining a growing relationship between them and Spandan.

As a member of the present working committee of Spandan, I must say that it is of immense pleasure to see all these activities accomplished successfully. In this regard, I would like to congratulate the committee members, whose hard efforts have borne such success. I would like to thank all those members of Spandan, who extended their helping hands without any hesitation in times of dire need. On behalf of the committee, I thank all of you whose direct or indirect support, advice, constructive criticism and suggestions have made the last year a fruitful one for Spandan. As our sincere gratitude to all of you whose financial contribution in terms of annual subscription and / or sponsorship, we are mentioning all your names in subsequent sections. Though the lists have been made with extreme care, still a few inadvertent mistakes might be there, for which apologies are due. And finally as a fulfillment of our commitment, we are publishing the details regarding money inflow to and expenditure of Spandan in 2010-2011 in one of the subsequent sections of this annual souvenir. As the famous saying of Rig-Veda goes, Truth is one, sages call it variously, we must appreciate that the thoughts of various sages try to capture the same truth, thereby making it absolutely subjective. And hence there is no end to the number of ways people can arrive at the same truth. Culture being the source of inner nourishment of the human race is also all about enlightened thoughts and is therefore subjective. Hence, for Spandan, there are still many avenues yet to be explored, leading to newer ways of representing various facets of Indian culture. And for that sojourn, I, on behalf of the incumbent working committee, wish all the very best to the next working committee of Spandan.

Rabindranath Tagore (7th May, 1861 7th August, 1941)

Rabindranath Tagore: Source Internet

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;

Where knowledge is free; Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls; Where words come out from the depth of truth; Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection; Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit; Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.
- Rabindranath Tagore

Activities of SPANDAN in 2010-2011

A] Cultural Events 1. Freshers Welcome (Nobeen Baron)

Nobeen

Baron

or

Freshers

Welcome was organized by Spandan on the 21st of August, 2010. It was an evening resplendent with impromptu skits, songs and several other performances by the newcomers. In spite of heavy showers, the students turned up in impressive numbers enthralling the audience with their innovation, group work and musical, literary and histrionic skills. The Freshers' Welcome 2010 evening concluded with the award of a token of appreciation to each newcomer, special prizes for outstanding performances, followed by dinner.

2. Bijaya Sommilanee

Before

the last of the autumn

clouds could disappear across the horizon, Spandan organized the Bijaya Sommilanee on 12th November, 2010 in living up to Bengali traditions. This was an occasion that enabled the home sick Bengalees to cherish some invaluable memories of the festive season and was punctuated with the usual Mishti Mukh, cultural events such as renditions of Pujor Gaan that covered Adhunik songs from Bijaya Sommilanee 2010 over five decades, instrumental fusions, dance performance depicting Mahishasura-Mardinee and a drama based on Satyajit Rays short story Patolbabu Filmstar. The most heartening aspect of these performances was the fact that the performers in these events comprised students of IISc, who along with the faculty members and their family (who showcased a compilation of recitations and songs under the title Raag- Dorbaree) gifted the audience at the packed auditorium, a truly memorable evening.

Banee Abahonee Sandhya and Saraswati Puja 2011

3. Banee Abahonee Sandhya and Saraswati Puja

The cultural programme on the evening preceding the ceremonial worship of the Goddess of Learning
has been the most eagerly awaited cultural event of the Spandan almanac over the years. This year on 12th February, the same expectant audience received a treat from the performers in the form of some outstanding performances by students, faculty members and their families. The performance by the faculty and family included an adapted version of Tagores dance-drama Balmiki Pratibha. This was followed by a musical programme by students that aimed at touching the various genres of Bengali music, such as folk songs, keertan, ragasroyee, country music and bangla band, and did so with aplomb. The writers/poets/artists whose literary and artistic contributions adorned the pages of Spandans annual magazine Agdum Bagdum were then awarded a token of appreciation; followed by some individual and group dance performances by students titled Bichitra. The theme of these dance performances was split into two parts- Saraswati Chaturanga or homage to the Goddess and Basanta Samagam- the onset of vernal hues in nature. The event concluded with the staging of a social satire by Utpal Dutta, Raater Otithi entirely by students, which earned plaudits from all and sundry. On Sunday, the 13th of February, Spandan organized the Saraswati Puja, the worship of the Goddess of Learning and Arts in the morning. The entire campus populace was invited to take part in this auspicious ceremony and a significant section thronged the place of worship to offer Pushpanjali and to receive Prosad. During the evening, there was another cultural programme that saw students and guests light up the stage with songs, dance performances and recitations. The gala evening culminated in the Khichuri Bhog - a conventional dinner that satiates the gastronomic aspirations of most Bengalees following the worship of the Goddess.

4. Rabindra-Nazrul Sandhya

As is the case every year, the onset of the

Bengali New Year, heralds the time when two of the greatest bards from Bengal Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam - take the centre stage in the minds of the culturally inclined Bengalees, this year was no different. In a humble attempt at catering to the taste of the intellectual minds as also to pay homage to the first Asian Nobel laureateRabindranath Tagore, on the occasion of his 150th birth anniversary, Spandan organized the Rabindra-Nazrul Sandhya on the 8th of Rabindra-Nazrul Sandhya 2011 May, 2011. There were some excellent solo renditions of Rabindrasangeet and Nazrulgeeti by the students, but the main attractions were the three compilations of songs and poems, one by the faculty members and their family (Kobi Pranaam) and two by the students, dedicated to Nazrul (Shunya Aji Gul-bagicha) and Tagore (Praan O Praanesh).

5. Rabi-Pranaam

This year being concurrent with the

150th birth anniversary of Bengals greatest bard and Indias first Nobel laureate, Rabindranath Tagore, Spandan organized an additional programme to pay tribute to one of the most versatile personalities of the twentieth century. At the heart of the programme was Rabindrasangeet performed by Prof. Mohan Singh Khangura - who is associated with the Sangeet Bhaban, Biswa Bharati University in his capacity as a teacher Rabi-Pranaam - A special event in May, 2011 of music. The sequence of sixteen Tagore songs sung by him along with some of his thoughts on Rabindrasangeet that he shared with the audience, had most of the listeners riveted to their seats. Prior to this, a small token of appreciation was given away to each of the performers who contributed towards the successful staging of Spandans onstage programmes throughout the year through their multifarious skills.

B] Publication of Annual Magazine Agdum-Bagdum

On

the day the Saraswati Puja was actually celebrated

throughout West Bengal (Basanta Panchami, 8th February, 2011), Spandan did not ignore the occasion altogether. Being a working day, it was not possible to organize the Puja, but the publication of the annual magazine Agdum Bagdum certainly did not pose any problems on that account. The royal size coloured magazine (for the first time ever) drew effusive praises from readers and connoisseurs of art and literature alike. Containing creative and humorous short stories, a novella, insightful essays, wonderful sketches, paintings and illustrations, crossword puzzle, beautiful poems, a descriptive travelogue section and some newly introduced sections, Agdum Bagdum has lived up to its reputation and also attracted many new readers. Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy (2nd August, 1861 16th June, 1944)

Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy: Sketch - Chandreyee Datta, 17.09.2010

It is stated in the Upanishads that The One said, 'I shall be Many'. The beginning of Creation is a move towards selfimmolation. Prafulla Chandra has become many in his pupils and made his heart alive in the hearts of many. And that would not have been at all possible had he not unreservedly made a gift of himself. The glory of this power in Prafulla Chandra as teacher will never be worn out by decrepitude. It will extend further in time through the ever-growing intelligence of youthful hearts; by steady perseverance they will win new treasures of knowledge.
- Rabindranath Tagore (On the 70th birthday of Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy)

C] General Events 1. Website Maintenance

Spandans website www.iiscspandan.org - came up in May 2010, and over the last year, the members
have been punctiliously updating the site, filing it up with photographs of the latest events and programmes, adding information about upcoming events and activities as also leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the visitor to the site has the most aesthetically pleasing of experiences. Constant cooperation, suggestions and feedback from the visitors also play a very important role in the maintenance of the website.

2. Picnic

During the winter months, the wanderlust that sets Bengalees apart is well known. Spandan too did its
bit to ensure that this was not nipped in the bud, by organizing a picnic on the 9th of January at ArkavathyKavery Sangam. However, the picnic was not restricted to Bengalees alone, but was also open to anyone associated with IISc. There was a good response and close to fifty people participated in the picnic. But, owing to some unfortunate circumstances, one of the students met with a tragic accident while bathing at Mekedatu and was swept along with the tide. Several attempts were made in the days that followed to find his whereabouts, with aid from the local police, members of Spandan, Students Council, Institute Authorities, and the media. However, till date he remains missing.

3. Maintenance of Ranade Library

To what was arguably the largest collection of Bengali books in Bengaluru, have been added the entire
collection of Tagores work, the complete published works of Kazi Nazrul Islam and some new volumes of plays by the legendary playwright Badal Sarkar (who passed away recently), thereby enriching the assortment even further. A great deal of attention has been focussed on restoring several older volumes, cataloguing newly procured volumes and meeting the demands of the ever-enthusiastic readers. New shelves are supposed to replace some older ones in the beginning of July, 2011, to give the Bengali section of the Ranade Library an immaculate look.

4. Social Welfare

As a part of social responsibility, Spandan has donated a sum of three thousand rupees towards the child
education drive of Ramakrishna Mission.

~ 15 ~

5. Publication of Annual Souvenir

As a commitment to its sponsors, well wishers and members alike, Spandan is publishing the annual
souvenir at the end of its term during the academic year 2010-11, highlighting its activities during the period, and providing a detailed list of expenses and donations/contributions from various quarters and the sponsors for various event(s).

6. Annual General Body Meeting

At the end of the incumbent committees term, an annual general body meeting will be convened in midJuly, where the detailed expenditure during the last academic year will be discussed and enlisted. Moreover, a new committee will be formed from among those members of Spandan who have filed in suitable nominations for various positions. The process will be finalized in the presence of the senior members of Spandan comprising several members of the faculty and student community.

Sri Ramakrishna (18th February, 1836 16th August, 1886)

Sri Ramakrishna: Sketch - Chandreyee Datta, 12.06.2011

Ramakrishna Paramahamsa is the epitome of the whole. Sri Aurobindo on Sri Ramakrishna His life is a searchlight of infinite power thrown upon the whole mass of Indian religious thought. He was the living commentary to the Vedas and to their aim. He had lived in one life the whole cycle of the national religious existence in India. Swami Vivekananda on Sri Ramakrishna Ramakrishna's life was an object-lesson in Ahimsa. His love knew no limits, geographical or otherwise. May his divine love be an inspiration to all. Mahatma Gandhi on Sri Ramakrishna his inner life embraced the whole multiplicity of men and Gods. Romain Rolland on Sri Ramakrishna His religious activity and experience were, in fact, comprehensive to a degree that had perhaps never before been attained by any other religious genius, in India or elsewhere. Arnold Toynbee on Sri Ramakrishna "Diverse courses of worship / from varied springs of fulfillment / have mingled in your meditation. / The manifold revelation of the joy of the Infinite / has given form to a shrine of unity in your life / where from far and near arrive salutations to which I join my own." Rabindranath Tagore on Sri Ramakrishna

Mother Teresa (26th August, 1910 5th September, 1997)

Mother Teresa: Sketch - Jhelum Chakravorty, 17.09.2010

- Mother Teresa
