CONCURRENT WORKSHOP SESSIONS

Thursday, July 24, 2008

3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Open Source Technology & Software as a Service: Auditorium Annex 1 & 2
Advantages of IT Trends for Microfinance
Open source refers to a software whose source code is freely available to the public, while Software as a Service (SaaS) is
a software delivery model where the software is hosted and maintained by a service provider and clients access the
software through the internet. These trends aim to offer a more flexible and cost-effective option to MFIs by reducing
investments on hardware, software licenses and manpower. Mifos and MiFITS are two initiatives that aim to make these
trends available to the Philippine microfinance industry. A project of the Grameen Foundation USA, Mifos is an open source
software currently being piloted in the Philippines. To further support the Mifos initiative, MiFITS (Microfinance IT Services,
Co.) is a proposed IT company that will deploy Mifos through the SaaS model, among its other services.
