Koxe Basurco est n en 1920 Mutriku, dans la province basque du Gipuzkoa. Il est arriv en France en 1927. Il est devenu pcheur en 1945 puis mcanicien en 1947, patron armateur en 1950 et enfin prsident fondateur de Itsasokoa en 1953 et prsident de diffrentes organisations maritimes au niveau national. Il fut parmi les premiers avoir eu lide daller pcher le thon sur les ctes africaines. Il est all Dakar avec Albert Elissalt en 1954. Il est dcd le 2 septembre 2002. Koxe Basurco was born in 1920 in Mutriku, a village located in the basque province of Gipuzkoa. He came to France in 1927. He began to fish in 1945, then was a mechanic in 1947, and bought his own ship in 1950. He founded the local fishermen's association Itsasokoa in 1953 and was in charge of various maritime organizations at the national level. He was the first to have the idea to send part of the local fleet on the African coasts to fish tuna. He went to Dakar with Albert Elissalt in 1954 to organize the campaign. He died on September 2, 2002.

Pourquoi/Why did they go ?

Lutilisation au dbut du XXme sicle de la bolinche (filet tournant plus long) amena des prises trs importantes qui ncessitrent la construction de conserveries. Dans les annes 1950, les conserveries Ciboure manquent de thons pour face la demande des consommateurs. Dans le Golfe de Gascogne, la pche au thon nest pas suffisamment productive. En 1954, Koxe Basurco va Dakar avec Albert Elissalt, et ils se rendent compte que les thons se pchent en grande quantit ds leurs premiers jours de pche. Alors, partir de 1955 , une grande partie de la flottille cibourienne et luzienne se retrouvera Dakar pchant le thon tropical albacore la canne, lappt vivant. In the beginning of the XXme century the use of the bolinche (a new longer and turning fishnet) caused a very important increase of the catches and the construction of canning plants to . In the 1950's, the industry in Ciboure needed more tunafish for to fullfill the consumers' needs. In the Bay of Biscay, local tuna fishing wasn't productive enough. In 1954, Koxe Basurco went to Dakar, Senegal, with Albert Elissalt, and they realize that tunas could be fished there in great quantity. From 1955, part of the local fleet will move to Dakar fishing tropical tunafish with using their own skills and fishing techniques.

Dans ma famille, on dit que mon arrire-grand pre a t le premier pcher le thon avec l'appt vivant en Europe. Son nom est Olascuaga Juanito. Mon grand pre, Jean Michel Aguirre, est all 6 fois Dakar avec le bateau Gure Izarra. Il y est rest 6 ans, en rentrant par avion une fois par an pour un mois. Le premier propritaire du Vagabond a t M. Etcheverria qui a t le plus jeune des patrons l'ge de 19 ans. Au cours de sa premire campagne Dakar, Dominique Lavillard, g de 15 ans, fut bless par un hameon reu en pleine face. Le bateau mit 18 heures pour rentrer au port. Dominique rejoignit ensuite pied lhpital distant de 1 2 km et y fut soign pendant deux trois jours. Il navait pas dargent, mme pour payer un taxi (il y en avait lpoque), car les pcheurs recevaient leur paye la fin de la campagne, en rentrant en France. In my family, I have been told that Juanito Olascuaga, my grandfather's father, was the first to fish tuna using the technique of live soft food in Europe. My grandfather, Jean Michel Aguirre, went 6 times to Dakar with the boat Gure Izarra. He stayed 6 years there, flying back home only once a year for a month. During his first fishing campaign in Dakar, his friend Dominique Lavillard, 15 years old, was wounded by a hook in his face. The boat needed 18 hours to return to the port. Dominique then walked to the distant hospital and stayed there two or three days. He did not have money, even to pay a taxi, because fishermen received their money at the end of the campaign, while returning to France.
