Press Release For Immediate Release South East Asia is in a constant state of flux. Regimes are coming down or softening their stance, doors are being opened to market economies, traditional values are challenged and give way to new thinking and technologies. Contemporary art is surely one of the ways to gain a better understanding of a country and its people. KARIN WEBER GALLERY FROM HONG KONG IS SHOWCASING SOUTHEAST ASIAN ART AT ART ASIA MIAMI (BOOTH D25) FROM 30 NOVEMBER TO 4 DECEMBER 2011. Artists represented are: MIN WAE AUNG & AUNG MYINT CHARLES CHAM THP THAVONSOUK DOMINIC RUBIO

BURMA MALAYSIA LAOS/CANADA PHILIPPINES

MIN WAE AUNGs work is figurative realism. In a strictly Buddhist country, nuns, monks and novices are an everyday sight, and that is what he paints. The figures are walking away, suspended, not earth-bound, not bound by anything. The sense of calm and serenity is wonderfully enriching. Towards Monastery 2, acrylic on canvas, 51x37in, 2011

AUNG MYINT is considered the father of contemporary Burmese art. Self-taught his mostly abstract works deal with the role of man against nature. Aung Myint is also a very accomplished performance artist. With his Mother & Child series he reflects on the pain of losing his mother when very young. He is the first artist from his country to receive the prestigious ASEAN Art Award in 2002. Mother & Child 11-8, acrylic on shan paper on canvas, 22x22in, 2011

CHARLES CHAMs work play heavily with the duality of life. His double faces are equally unbalanced, mirror emotions are depicted, his signature appears top and bottom, color opposites are used side by side. He says, I believe that drawing is thinking and painting is feeling. Therefore I draw what I think and paint what I feel. Heads & Tales, acrylic on canvas, 51x39in,2011

DOMIC RUBIO uses as his inspiration imagined scenes from the late Spanish and American colonial period. His quirky figures capture the nostalgia and romanticism of these times whilst giving them a modern sensibility and whimsical appeal. Malay Mother & Child, oil on canvas, 40x30in,2009

THP THAVONSOUK The artist has made Canada his home for over 30 years, yet he speaks to modernity and tradition with equal dedication. His art is informed by a deep understanding of both Asian and Western history and visual cultures. Nocturne, oil on linen, 45x45in, 2011
