21 Balanoires took over a newly open space in front of Universit du Qubec Montrals Science Faculty, in April and May 2011. Together with an animal behaviour professor from the faculty, we explored the topic of cooperation which states that together we achieve better things than separately.

The result was a giant collective instrument made of 21 musical swings; each swing in motion triggers different notes, all the swings together compose a piece, but some sounds only emerge from cooperation. The project stimulated ownership of the new space, bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds, and creating a place for playing and hanging out in the middle of the city centre.

Travelling Edition
We are currently developing a travelling edition for the experience to live in other cities,starting summer 2011.

How it works
The swings are interactive, triggering sounds when swinging back and forth.
Instrument Distribution Each swing represents one of three instruments: piano, guitar or vibraphone. To facilitate identification, a colour is attributed to each instrument:
Musical Cooperation Each swing plays a set of notes from their instrument. Different notes are triggered depending on how high someone is swinging. When people play in synchronicity, a mini scale plays.
Secret Mode When all swings are active, a secret musical mode is activated to create a special reward for the players. In the first edition, a synthesiser sound played on all swings and transformed the experience.

Technical components
Sensors, lights and a sound system are concealed inside the swing units and connect to a technical shed.

Configuration(s) and site dimensions
The swing units can be placed in different configurations based on the selected site.
Number Of Swings The number of swing is flexible. The first edition was designed for 21 swings, but any multiple of three is possible. However, a minimum of 15 swings is necessary to create sufficient impact.

Security
For the first edition, the following elements insured security.

1. Security mats or other A soft surface was placed underneath each swing set (whether it be a mat, grass or others). 2. Surveillance all day. A person on site all day facilitated communication and made sure the swings were used in a safe way. 3. Packing up at night At night, the swings were placed out of reach, folded up and locked on top of their structure roof. 4. Signage A note on each swing seat read: DANGER No Standing No Jumping Not too high... Be Good

Jose Manuel Calero took the bus and metro down from St Lonard to try the swings with his daughter, Manuela, 6. Its a great experience, very relaxing - its marvellous, the retired aerospace worker said Tuesday as his swing plucked a guitar sound. My daughter says we should come here everyday - I wish! We want to be a laboratory - or at least a window - for creativity in Montreal, Fortin said. It means dressing the urban environment so that people make it their own, that they meet, try things out, get surprised. You watch people on the swings, and they all have a big smile on their face. In Montreal The Swings Are Alive With The Sound Of Music These are sweetnote dreamswings an innovation in play and sound. Cooperation, the unbearable lightness of swinging and musical permutations scoring new compositions it just doesnt get any better. I hope 21 Balanoires will reappear from time to time to inject playfulness in the heart of the city.
