CAISO Updates

Gary DeShazo Director, Regional Transmission North California ISO September 17, 2010

2010/2011 CAISO Transmission Plan

Phase II of the planning process is almost complete

Preliminary study results were posted on Sep 10, 2010 Request Window will be opened on Oct 11, 2010 Stakeholder meeting was scheduled on Oct 26-27, 2010

Key assumptions in this years study: High renewables

Two key assumptions, meeting 20% by 2015 and 33% by 2020 Majority of renewables are in southern California

Final study results and recommendations will be available

in the 2010/2011 ISO Transmission Plan (March 2011)

Revised Transmission Planning Process (RTPP)

The ISO submitted the proposal to amend its transmission

planning tariff on June 4, 2010
Accommodate the RPS and other policies Better coordination with LGIP process

FERC technical conference was held on August 24, 2010 Still an ongoing process

Generation Interconnection Process - SGIP

The SGIP reform proposal was approved by the ISO Board

of Governors
Shifting from serial to cluster approach Part of the effort to streamline the interconnection process Triggered by recent dramatic increase in SGIP requests The approach will help addressing the growing backlog of SGIP Next step: This ISO will seek FERC approval for the unified interconnection process

LGIP The ISO continue to see large number of renewables in the Queue
Transition Cluster
More than 50 projects, total capacity exceeds 10,000 MW From the total amount, approx 8,000 MW are renewable (6,000 MW of solar and 2,000 MW of wind) Complete technical studies as part of Phase II, LGIA in progress

Cluster 1
More than 6,000 MW of new applications, less than 100 MW of nonrenewable Phase I technical studies have been completed Phase II studies will be performed in 2011

Cluster 2
Approx 9,700 MW of new applications. Out of this amount, approx 7900 MW are renewables Phase I study is ongoing

Cluster 3
Cluster 3 window closed, applications are being reviewed Mostly renewable (similar to clusters 1-2), total number of applications and capacity are being finalized. Cluster 3 Phase I studies will be conducted in 2011
