Happy Holidays!

SUN CITY FESTIVAL BY DEL WEBB

Festival Residents Give Back In 2011

The Community Association would like to recognize some charitable efforts being undertaken within our community by many of our Chartered Clubs and Caring Neighbors, our volunteer group. The Festival Association of Beauties (FABs) continue to bring support to Eves Place, an area domestic violence shelter. Earlier this year their fashion show raised $1,500 along with donations of 161 purses and wallets, and just this fall held a drive for paper products to the shelter. Paper Crafts & More have also been very generous with donations to the Tirado/Paz Funds, $376 to St. Marys Food Bank, and $225 to Caring Neighbors all raised from card sales and raffles. The Pottery/Ceramics Club donated ten-percent of their sales to the Susan G Komen Cause and the MDA Golf Tournament, while the Gourmet Club offered donations to the Tirado/Paz Funds. Players Club donations included MDA, Susan G Komen, Tirado Memorial Fund, and Caring Neighbors Food Drive. Social Dance gave to the Tirado Memorial Fund, and Crafty Scrappers to Caring Neighbors for the Thanksgiving Food Drive. Mens Golf Group gave to MDA and $1,600 to the USO during the Veterans Day Tournament. Caring Neighbors is always helping residents in the community as well as orgainizing Thanksgiving Food Drives, Toy Drives, and gathering donations for active military and homeless Veterans. Thanks to all of you for your generous giving!

The Indigo Grille would like to thank everyone for their continued patronage and support during the recent implementation of the fall menu. Chef Aaron prides himself on using the best products available to create a freshness-driven selection of appetizers, salads, sandwiches and entrees. Everything from the salad dressings to the fabulous sauces and stocks are made from scratch by his talented culinary team. A specialty produce company now delivers fresh product to the Indigo Grille five days a week. The olive oil is imported, as are the artichokes and pastas. The vegetables are sourced from local Arizona farms whenever possible. Local vendors are sought out to augment the main food distributor to add back to the Arizona economy. Chef Aaron is passionate about good food and, because you are as well, he uses choice meats, natural chicken, and sustainably raised seafood.

Its All About Fresh!

The fall menu was introduced in mid-October, and after several weeks of operations the Chef and the team have made purchasing improvements which have enabled a modest reduction in pricing of certain menu items. This despite the everincreasing food prices we all are experiencing when we grocery shop! These price adjustments will be reflected on the menu beginning in December. Chef Aaron and his new Sous Chef, Kellen, are both excited about the fall menu and look forward to the next minor menu change for winter in early January. Again, thank you for your loyal patronage and we look forward to seeing you again at the Indigo Grille!

The Indigo Grille is now taking reservations for the Christmas Eve lunch buffet (10 am - 2 pm). Call 928-252-6445 ext. 209 for reservations.
We are now open one hour later on Sundays, Mondays & Tuesdays, 11 AM - 7 PM!

RESIDENT PROFILE
Dana and Penny have jumped into the Sun City lifestyle.

Dana and Penny Kovach

Dana and Penny arrived in Sun City Festival in December 2010. Danas parents blazed the trail, moving to the original Sun City 25 years ago, so Dana and Penny knew that the Sun City lifestyle was right for them. They just celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary and are high school sweethearts. They cherish their two children and seven grandchildren. Their son and his family of nine are missionaries in Brazil. Their daughter is single and a nanny in Michigan. They are originally from Columbus, Ohio and are true Buckeyes. Danas Dad remains an energetic Sun City Resident. They also have cousins in Sun City West, so they are a loyal Sun City family! Dana finished a 35 year executive career with GM in June, 2009. Most of their married life was spent in greater Detroit, except for a rich, memorable 2.5 year assignment in Brazil. Penny is a great wife and mother. Dana and Penny have jumped into the Sun City lifestyle. Youll see them at the Fitness Center, the pool, in ASU classes, playing bridge, sampling other club activities and at special events. They are also active in the Church at Sun Valley. Dana has recently been appointed as an alternate to the Buckeye Planning and Zoning Commission. He is a Block Watch Captain, Neighborhood Representative, and Liaison

for the Citizens Patrol with the Buckeye Police. Penny is a very warm and talented professional clown, balloonist and magician. Shes always making special balloon creations for neighbors, friends and perfect strangers! Shes been entertaining for 25 years and is currently the Convention Coordinator for the International Conference of the Fellowship of Christian Magicians. As Christmas nears, they take on a special role as Santa and Mrs. Claus. They have a great love for Christmas which they share in each engagement. Youll recognize them in festive colored clothes or in their special red car and golf cart! If you ever hear a jolly Ho, Ho, Ho in the Sage Center, you can bet that Santa Dana is around! They have welcomed a puppy, Copper, into their home and he expects to be a big help in this family tradition as the lead sleigh dog! Dana and Penny have greatly enjoyed making many new friends in Festival. They are enthusiastic ambassadors for our community and want you to know that their home and hearts are always open for you! They wish you a most blessed and merry Christmas!

Stroke Prevention - What You Should Know

Every 40 seconds, a person in the United States has a stroke. Approximately 137,000 Americans die of stroke each year. Like many illnesses and deaths from disease, a stroke is highly preventable. Many of the risk factors for stroke are lifestyle-related and controllable.
A stroke occurs when either the blood supply to ion the brain is blocked, or a blood vessel ruptures in ent v the brain. Interruption of blood flow to the brain Pre causes death of brain cells and brain damage. The effect of a stroke is determined by severity and location in the brain. A small stroke may cause weakness in one limb which can be overcome. A major stroke can cause paralysis in one limb or the inability to speak. Functions controlled by affected areas of the brain will be the ones lost or impaired by a stroke. More than two-thirds of stroke survivors have some type of disability. The good news is that many stroke risks are controllable. The risks, some lifestyle-related and some medical-related, include the following. Uncontrolled high blood pressure Elevated cholesterol level Smoking Obesity Alcohol abuse

Blood pressure should be under 120/80 and should be checked regularly. Total cholesterol should be under 200. See your physician to have your cholesterol checked. Alcohol use should be no more than one drink per day (1 oz. of liquor, 12 oz. beer, 6-8 oz of wine). Regular cardiovascular exercise can reduce cholesterol, blood pressure and body weight. Brisk walking for 30 minutes per day burns extra calories and goes a long way in helping reduce elevated blood pressure and cholesterol. For an added benefit, aim for 30-60 minutes of brisk walking or other cardiovascular exercise most days of the week. A healthy lifestyle includes regular exercise, avoiding smoking and keeping blood pressure and cholesterol at safe levels to reduce any risk of stroke. For more information, go to the website of the National Stroke Association at www.Stroke.org
