Shalom Mission
Shalom Center is dedicated
to changing the lives of women
suffering from alcoholism, addiction
and other life-debilitating problems
by offering a Christ centered, Biblical
-based long-term Christian program
and facility for recovery. We are
nestled on a 104 acre facility that
includes dormitories, classrooms,
chapel and a scenic pond as well as
the powerful healing presence of
Jesus Christ.
What We Believe
Shalom believes a holistic
Christian approach is the most
effective means for long-term
success in treating alcoholism and
drug addiction. We offer a three-
month, six-month and nine-month
program to facilitate the recovery
process. Paramount to the format
is a daily structured class plan that
involves exposing the roots of the
destructive behavioral patterns that
have led to homelessness, death of
relationships, families and jobs.

Remnants Open House
T
he pain and shame of drinking to excess, the
hurt it caused everyone I loved, somehow it
made the drinking worse. If loving my children or my
husband or my God could have made me stop, I would
have. It was, for me, a relationship that I could not
untangle from my heart. I couldnt make sense of it.
No one could. And so I came for treatment to Shalom.
Had I missed this struggle, I might have missed one
of Gods most tender mercies to me. Ive learned the
cross really did bear all the weight I put on it. That
I really couldnt outrun His Love. I couldnt out drink
it. Its all of grace. The pain and hopelessness of
my addiction drove me straight to the heart of my
Redeemer, where today I drink deeply from the depths
of His Love, His relentless pursuit, His extravagant
grace. He pours Himself into all my brokenness,
quenches my thirsty soul, quiets all the noise. He is
teaching me to live loved and to respond by loving.
Im learning that underneath every womans distress is
an ache/question/ fear/desire that needs an answer. Im
learning that some of us who cant get those answers
tend to feel very misunderstood, alone and flaweda
judgment so painful that we need to numb it. We might
grasp at something for salvation. Sometimes we try-
harder-to-do-better. When that fails us, we rebel or
give up. We try and try, but trying cant save us so we
collapse into hopelessness. Inside we feel unheard,
dismissed, invalidated, and resigned. We dont know if
we matter, if were safe, beautiful, heard, valued, or why
were even here. No one can understand or give us the
answers we are desperate for. But there is Someone
Who can. Jesus Christ is the answer. Only He can give
rest to our clamoring souls. The gospel is our hope. It
is our salvation. Im not just talking about getting
saved, but so much more! The gospel of Christ is our
very power for living, breathing, hoping. Yes, we are
so bad He had to die for usandwe are so loved He
wanted to. Both. At the same time. For me. He loves
me like that! And this life is not about my performing
and measuring up. And its not even about my failures
and shortcomings. There is a third option. Christ Jesus
really became my sin so I can become the righteousness
of God in Him. (II Cor 5:21) Its not about turning from
the bad I do to the good I try to doits about turning
from the bad and the good I think I can do, to Jesus--
living in Him, walking in His ways, loving with His love.
Im not talking about restraining behavior and desires
Im talking about being transformed from the inside out,
because our desires are met in Him. When we know
that Christ came to reconcile us to God and each other,
we can start to take risks. Sometimes, it means letting
go of relationships that are not good for us. The thing is,
that when the truth of Gods Love for us becomes real
to our hearts, it gets easier to process the destructive
relationship patterns and habits that have been holding
us captive. We get new understanding and perspective.
Because our hearts see that the King of Kings and Lord
of Lords has set His Love on me and says: See that
girl right there, Im gonna make her mineand love
herand never let her go. She is precious to me.
Its a privilege to serve Shalom as a teacher and
counselor. And its my heart to offer an invitation to
anyone who struggles. If you are a wife, mother,
nurse, teacher, minister, or businesswoman (we are the
strivers who tend to go to comfort and relief to take the
edge off of always trying to meet the standard or need
a little pick-me-up to keep us going)or you might be
a dancer, escort, prisoner, abused or homeless woman
(we are the outcasts who tend to seek numbness from
shame and hopelessness anything to help us make
it through the day,) this gospel is for you. This Jesus,
He came for you. Come and drink from the fountain
of gracetaste and see that the King is goodand
that He is enthralled with your beauty. (Ps. 45:11)

I
waited patiently for the Lord
to help me and He turned
and heard my cry. Im Karen
and Im 51 years old. I have
struggled with my addiction
for 25 years. I started using
when I was 22. Ive been
mentally, physically and sexually
abused while in addiction. I hurt
my family deeply. I told myself
one day I was going to quit,
but I never was able to stop
using. I went to prison and was
released in December 2010. I
relapsed in April of 2011. This
time I begged the Lord to help
me. He made a way for me to
enter Shalom. Id never been
to treatment. I told myself I was
only going to stay for 3 months.
God had a different plan for
me and I surrendered to His
way. I completed the 6 month
program and am now living at
the Shalom Halfway House in
Anderson. Shalom has taught
me so much about God. I
accepted Jesus Christ as my
Saviour. The classes at Shalom
have taught me so much about
my addicitive behavior. I didnt
realize until I went to treatment
just how stuck I was in the
addiction trap. Co-Dependency
class at Shalom taught me how
to have healthier relationships
in recovery. The fruits of the
classes are becoming evident
in my family of 4 children
and 12 grandchildren. I have
also learned a great deal
about working on my anger,
forgiveness, patience and
most importantly, love issues.
Shalom has given me an
abundance of recovery tools to
work with in my new life. I have
a great amount of peace and
joy in my life. To my sisters in
Christ I leave this message for
you: If God said it - Believe it. If
God gives it - receive it. If God
shows it - perceive it. If Satan
tried to steal it - In recovery,
retrieve it!

The goal of Shalom
House Ministries is to
get our clients to abstain
from use, to be able to
function again normally
and re-enter society,
and to stay in recovery
clean and sober. In an
ideal world, we would
never turn any woman
away for lack of ability to
pay. But the reality is that
we are not in a postion to
do this because we have
fixed costs A scholarship
gift to Shalom House
Ministries is a wonderful
way of extending a hand
to those women who
have no means of income
or savings to provide for
their treatment costs. If
your bible study class,
church, or civic group
would be interested in
sponsoring a woman
through treatment, please

Currently, Maria serves as the

that are seeking spiritual restoration

rewarding parts of working at the
Shalom Center is seeing the Holy
Spirit of God revitalize, rejuvenate,
strengthen, capture, revolutionize, and
modernize women and their families
back to God and give them a new
start.
It is Marias belief to sustain her
character, integrity, and spiritual
empowerment through her practice of
a bios-psycho-social-spiritual regimen
founded in 1 Thessalonians 5:23 And
