Vermont Muzzleloader and 2nd Archery Deer Seasons, Dec. 3-11
Retired Wardens Star in Vermont Wild, Volume Two
On December 3rd, area residents can choose
Montpeliers Bear Pond Books or Bridgeside
Books in Waterbury - or visit both stores - to
meet the author and two of the wardens whose
stories are told in the best selling Vermont
Wild book series.
Eric Nuse of Johnson, whose wacky outdoor
stories were told in Vermont Wild, Volume
One, will be at Bridgeside Books in Waterbury,
while the series author, Megan Price, and former
warden Stan Holmquist of Rochester will appear
at Bear Pond in Montpelier. The book signings in
both locations begin at 11am and end at
1:30pm.
Volume Two is hot off the press with 14 all
new, very funny adventures from five different
wardens, Price said. Weve had so many
requests for book signings that its been hard to
keep up with the demand. With the holidays
here, and the Vermont Wild series so popular,
we want to give shoppers every chance to get
their books signed for gift giving. Some people
buy a half dozen copies and mail them to friends
and relatives all over the country.
Vermont Wild, Volume One rocketed to the
top of the best seller list at many independent
Vermont bookstores in 2010 and has been nomi-
nated for several awards, Price noted. The first
volume featured Nuses stories. From Raccoon
Riot to Moose Vesuvius readers laugh out
loud as Eric works to corral angry moose, relo-
cate raccoons and outwit clever poachers.
Volume Two contains two more Nuse tales,
and introduces readers to four more wardens
whose adventures have readers laughing out loud
once again. They are: Denny Gaiotti of Whiting,
Holmquist of Rochester, Richard Hislop of
Fairfax and Howard Brown of Swanton.
The wardens stories are told as if the wardens
are sharing their stories around a campfire.
Many hunters take the book to hunting camp,
while teachers are using the books to get reluc-
tant middle school students to read, Price noted.
These stories resonate with anyone who loves
the outdoors. Theres no blood or gore. They are
suitable for any age and women love the stories
as much as men. Published in paperback with a
water resistant cover, the books are designed to
be stuffed into a backpack into the woods. Each
story is illustrated. Vermont Wild One has 13
stories and contains 284 pages. Volume Two has
308 pages and contains 14 stories.
From Track Star to Fly Trap, from Skinny
Goose and the Satan Series about a naughty
black lab with his own ideas, the warden adven-
tures in Volume Two will again have readers
laughing out loud, Price promised.
Published in paperback by Pine Marten Press,
Volume One and Two sell for $19.95 each at
most independent bookstores and many corner
markets throughout Vermont and can be pur-
chased online as well. Visit www.VermontWild.
com to preview some of
Hunters have good reason to be excited
about Vermonts muzzleloader deer season and
the second part of the archery deer season, both
occurring December 3-11 this year. The later
season offers the likelihood of colder tempera-
tures and the prospects for snow factors that
can improve hunter success.
Vermont hunters may take up to three deer in
a calendar year with appropriate licenses and
permits. The annual limit may be achieved in
any combination of seasons (archery, youth
weekend, November rifle season, December
muzzleloader). Only two of the three deer in
the annual limit may be legal bucks, and only
one legal buck is allowed per hunting season.
All three deer in the annual bag limit may be
antlerless deer.
A legal buck must have at least one antler
with two or more points one inch or longer.
The main antler beam counts as one point,
regardless of length. An antlerless deer is a
deer with antlers less than three inches in
length or no antlers.
Last year, muzzleloader hunt-
ers harvested 4,232 deer, includ-
ing 558 legal bucks and 3,674
antlerless deer. Hunters are
expected to take fewer deer in
the muzzleloader season this
year because the Fish and
Wildlife Department issued 63
percent fewer antlerless deer
permits due to the severity of
last winter and herd reductions
achieved in recent years.

LEGENDARY POWDERS
By Don Leypoldt
Three former NECBL pitchers were added to Major League
Baseball 40-man rosters last week. The Colorado Rockies added
lefty Christian Friedrich. The newly christened Miami Marlins
called up righty Tom Koehler, while the Chicago Cubs selected
southpaw Jeff Beliveau.
Adding the players to the 40-man roster protects them from the
Major League Rule 5 Draft, which will be held December 8th.
Rockies.com said, Friedrich, the Rockies top pick in the 2008
MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Eastern Kentucky, spent the
last two seasons at Double-A Tulsa. After struggling through a
series of injuries in 2010, he went 6-10 with a 5.00 ERA in 25
starts. Friedrich was named a Texas league All-Star at midseason,
when he was 6-5 with a 3.94 ERA, but did not win a game after
June 26. Friedrich, however, entered the season as MLB.coms
No. 50 prospect in all of Minor League Baseball.
The Chicago Cubs official website reported, Beliveau, 24, was
named the Cubs 2011 Minor League Pitcher of the Year after
going 6-2 with five saves and a 1.57 ERA in 53 relief appearances
between Class A Daytona and Double-A Tennessee. The lefty
combined to strike out 89 and walked 19 over 74 1/3 innings. He
also pitched for Team USA and briefly in the Arizona Fall League.
In four Minor League seasons, Beliveau is 17-9 with 10 saves and
a 2.69 ERA.
Marlins.com, added, Koehler, 26, is coming off a 12-7 (4.97
ERA) season at Triple-A New Orleans. The right-hander promises
to offer depth to the rotation.
The Rockies selected the 64 Friedrich out of Eastern Kentucky
in the first round of the 2008 draft. The southpaw was the 25th
overall selection. Rhode Island native Beliveau and SUNY-Stony
Brook Koehler were selected 13 spaces apart, both in the 18th
round of that same draft.
Koehler played for the 2005 Keene Swamp Bats, posting a 3-5
record and a 2.97 ERA in eight starts. He struck out over a batter
per inning.
Friedrich, a 2006 Vermont Mountaineer, left New England as
one of the Leagues most highly anticipated prospects. He had a
36-to-5 strikeout ratio and a 1.41 ERA in his 32 innings of work
for the Green Mountain State franchise.
Beliveau also pitched in 2006, suiting up for the nearby
Newport Gulls. The Florida Atlantic product had a 1.25 ERA in his
seven appearances, four of which were starts.
The NECBL has had 77 alumni appear in the Major Leagues.

Vermont Agency of Natural Resources Repeals
Rule Permitting ATVs on State Lands
The Central Vermont Raiders Middle School
7/8 football team accomplished great things over
the course of their 2011 season. At the end of the
regular season they were ranked 3rd out of 7
teams in their division going into the playoffs.
Faced with the challenge of being last years
champions, the Boyz of Fall beat Winooski
12-0 in week one of the playoffs, and a 12-8 win
against North Country in the semi-finals set the
stage for the Championship matchup against the
number 1 ranked St Albans Steelers.
Both teams moved the ball well in the first
half but the defenses stood their ground with a
couple of exciting goal line stances, and at half
time the score was tied 0-0. The score remained
0-0 until late in the 3rd, when the Raiders scored
but failed on the point after, making the score
6-0. Going into the 4th, both teams had back to
back turnovers setting the stage for an exciting
ending. With a little over two minutes remaining,
the Raiders had the ball at midfield when they
scored on a long run up the middle. St Albans
tried but was unsuccessful in their attempts to
reach the end zone on their last two possessions,
making the final score Raiders 14, St Albans 0.
In three playoff games, the Raiders defense
gave up a total of 8 points and for the second
year in a row, they can call themselves Maple
Bowl Champs!
The 2011 CV Raiders were coached by Andy
Flagg, Bill Bates, Mario Hankerson, Ken Upmal
& Dan Brochu. For more information, check out
the CV RAIDERS home page at NVYFL.com.

The Vermont Agency of Natural Resources (ANR) has filed a
Final Proposed Rule with the Vermont Secretary of State and the
Legislative Committee on Administrative Rules (LCAR) that
repeals a 2009 rule that addressed the use of ATVs on state land.
Following a public hearing held last spring, and the review of
thousands of comments, ANR has decided to proceed with the
repeal of what is known as the ATV rule.
ANR Secretary Deb Markowitz said I was pleased to see so
many Vermonters weigh in on the issue of whether it makes sense
for ATVs to ride on public land. After weighing the substance of
the comments and concerns about the legality of the original rule
we decided to move ahead on the repeal. Markowitz said, We
have also taken concrete steps to address the Vermont ATV
Sportsmens Association legitimate need for limited connector
trails across public land.
Under the separation of powers in state government a state
agency may only adopt a rule if it has been given the power to do
so by the legislature. As a check on the executive branches rule-
making authority all rules go to the Legislative Rules Committee
(LCAR) before they become effective.
Markowitz said, In 2009, LCAR voted unanimously to object
to the ATV rule. They strongly believed that ANR did not have the
power to adopt the regulation. Because we cannot point to clear
authority to adopt this rule, the regulation is vulnerable to legal
attack, with little likelihood of prevailing in court. The rule has
been challenged in the Washington County Superior Court by the
Conservation Law Foundation (CLF).
Markowitz states, It does not make sense to try to defend the
ATV rule in court given that LCAR has already determined that no
authority to adopt the rule exists.
Approximately 2,000 members of the public commented that
ANR should not repeal the ATV rule. Those opposed to the appeal
cited concerns about the economic impact of discouraging ATV
riders from coming to Vermont, a belief that ATV riders will be
more responsible if the sport is formally recognized by the state,
and that ATV use has become a more organized sport because the
work of the Vermont All Terrain Vehicle Sportsman Association
(VASA) and local clubs.
Approximately 1,000 members of the public expressed support
for ANRs proposal to repeal the ATV rule. Those in support of the
repeal commented that ATVs have significant adverse impacts on
the environment, that there is a history of ATV riders violating the
law, that ANR does not have adequate resources to police ATV
riders on state land, and that the ATV rule adopted by ANR in 2010
is illegal because ANR did not have the authority to adopt the
rule.
Secretary Markowitz noted, There is no question that ATV rid-
ers, under the leadership of VASA, are more organized and aware
of the rules governing ATV riding than they have been in the past,
and that there may be limited situations where crossing state land
is appropriate. Markowitz continued, But ATV riding can cause
environmental damage, especially when ATV riders do not follow
the law; and right now, the state does not have the resources to
permit it to enforce against illegal ATV.
Markowitz said, although ANR is repealing the prior rule on
ATVs, we are working with VASA to use our existing authority to
provide license agreements for limited use of state property.
License agreements are currently used to permit cell towers,
mountain bike trails, and other uses on state lands where the use is
consistent with the underlying management purposes of the land.
Markowitz said, I am pleased to have already completed one
license arrangement with VASA for a 500 foot crossing alongside
route 105 in Brighton. We believe this license process is a more
controlled and more appropriate mechanism to authorize ATV use
in the limited circumstances where it may be warranted to connect
private trail systems.
