GAZI UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF ENGINEERING AND ARCHITECTURE DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING SOIL MECHANICS LABORATORY Experiment Report of Determination of Specific Gravity 1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Object This experiment defines the method for the determination of the specific gravity of soils by means of a pycnometer. The definition of secific gravity is the ratio of the weight in air of a given volume of a material at a constant temperature to the weight of an air of an equal volume of distilled water at a constant temperature. 2.0 EQUIPMENT 2.1 Pycnometer glass bottle of 50 ml capacity witha fitted glass stopper (see photo1) 2.2 Stopper glass with a small hole through centre to permit emission of air water. (See Photo 2) 2.3 Balance of sufficient sensitivity (accurate to 0.01 kg) 2.4 Samples collected on site (in which clay content is much) 3.0 PROCEDURE 3.1 Calibrarion of Pycnometer 3.1.1 3.1.2 3.1.3 3.2.1 3.2.2 Clean, dry and weigh the pycnometer, Fill pycnometer with de-aired, with distilled water up to the last level of flask. Measure the the mass of the flaskand the water filled top level. Take a specimen sample and after placing the soil samples in the cans, weigh the cans and and record the weight in the wet weight with lid. Keep the can in the oven with lid removed. Dry the sample to constant weight weight maintaining the temperature in 105 oC for period about 24 hours (24 hours is not an absolute condition, the perid depends on the sample reach to a constant weight). 3.2.3 Record the final constant weight of the can with dried soil sample. 3.2 Determination of dried solid soil

GAZI UNIVERSITY FACULTY OF ENGINEERING AND ARCHITECTURE DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING SOIL MECHANICS LABORATORY Experiment Report of Determination of Specific Gravity 3.3 Specific Gravity 3.3.1 3.3.2 3.3.3 3.3.4 3.3.5 3.3.6 We have already measured the solid soil sample and pycnometer. Place the dried solid soil sample in pycnometer, taking care not lose any soil. Fill pycnometer half full with distilled water. Remove entrapped air. Fill pycnometer with distilled water, then stopper. Clean and dry outside of pycnometer. Weigh pycnometer and contents accurate to 0,01 kg.

4. RESULTS AND CALCULATIONS 4.1. Calculations M1: Mass of empty pycnometer, Mpyc M2: Mpyc + mass of water filling whole volume M3: Mpyc + mass of solid soils M4: Mpyc + mass of solid soils + mass of water Gs = (M3 M1)/[(M2 M4) (M4 M3)] 4.0 CALCULATION
