J o a n Ta y l o r s Te n P i n R a p . . . .
While Thanksgiving is over and the December holidays are imminent, I am reflecting on what within bowling I am thankful for. The list is virtually endless. Here are a few thoughts: The PBA returning to an all non-exempt tour, as in days of old. The original Firestone Tournaments of Champions. The town of Akron opened up for the champions and their spouses. Banners were hung from streetlights. Each champion had the use of a car for the week, gratis. The Firestone Country Club hosted a wives dinner. After the championship round, everyone in attendance was treated to a lavish banquet back at the Hilton Akron, followed by a celebrity fun pro-am tournament with the 24 finalists. The companies that weathered all the ups and downs in the industry. The companies that hold fast and provide quality equipment, bags, shoes and accessories in an ever-changing market. ABC-TV when it covered professional bowling every Saturday afternoon with Chris Schenkel and Billy Welu, and later on, Bo Burton. ESPN which eventually picked up the pro tours, both mens and womens. The women who toughed it out on their variousnamed tours for the love of the sport and their profession. The behind-the-scenes people with the PBA and ESPN who enjoy an annual fun bowling tournament when they can steal some late-night time and a venue. The spouses who have supported their partners chosen career, for better or worse. Two such people were the Canipas sisters, Tammy (Aulby) and Candy (Cook). The Cooks even home-schooled their daughters in a motor home for a while in order for Steve to stay on tour and still be with his family. The sponsors who stepped up to support mens and womens professional bowling. The celebrities who got involved and brought some glamour to the sport. This includes professional athletes (i.e., Jerome Bettis) and actors (i.e., Michael J. Fox) who came out for exhibitions or pro-ams and discovered how much fun they could have. Any media who used bowling as a backdrop for a music video, a television series (CSI, Ed) or commercials. At long last they are not making a mockery of bowling. All the fundraising that bowling provides for charities whether the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Fund or scholarships. The proprietors who consistently give back to their bowlers and to the community. I am especially thankful for all the proprietors who did not sell their centers and ride off into the sunset. The warm fuzzies that bowling has given to me personally over the years, paving the way for a weekly column, new and renewed friendships, opportunities to serve the bowling community by running fundraisers and tournaments, being honored by the local organizations and BWAA, and my honoring our local men, women, and youths. And so, my thanks go out to you, our Morris County and surrounding area bowlers, your supporting relatives, and coaches. ********************* Speaking of our youth bowlers, during the month of December, all Morris County bowling centers that have sanctioned youth leagues will be hosting Adult/Youth Qualifiers. All sanctioned youth bowlers may get the information from their league coaches. The winners of the in-house qualifiers will be eligible to bowl in the Morris County USBC YA 42nd Annual Adult/Youth Roll-off that will be held at Boonton Lanes on Sunday February 5, 2012 (yes-Super Bowl Sunday) with a snow date of February 12, 2012. If you need any further information, please call Elaine Wilson at the Association Office at 973-267-4279.

Matt Cannizzaro - USBC ARLINGTON, Texas - United States Bowling Congress Sport Bowling members looking to challenge themselves on the same conditions seen on the Professional Bowlers Association Tour again will have that opportunity with the return of the PBA Experience. PBA Experience leagues are back in action since Nov. 1, and bowlers can now test their skills on the Viper, Shark, Scorpion, Chameleon, Cheetah, Earl Anthony, Carmen Salvino, Detroit Open, World Championship, Tournament of Champions and U.S. Open oil patterns featured at national and regional PBA events. Patterns will be available as they are adapted for the various lane machines. "Bowlers really seem to enjoy measuring themselves against the pros they see on TV and other Sport bowlers," said USBC Executive Director Stu Upson. "We are pleased to once again partner with the PBA to offer this option to leagues across the country." Competing on the same lane patterns used at the highest level helps bowlers focus on accuracy and shot making and puts an emphasis on spares. What sets a Sport pattern apart from a traditional house condition is the ratio of oil applied to the lane. A Sport pattern is much flatter and less forgiving, while a house shot allows for a greater margin of error. While competing in a PBA Experience league does require a membership upgrade, there are many benefits to taking the Sport Bowling challenge. Along with being able to pinpoint weaknesses and hone their skills, Sport members are eligible for special awards, member rewards, great discounts from bowling's top manufacturers and local pro shops and a members-only
