Syllabus Making the Right Choices

Box 5784 Playa del Rey, CA 90296 Office Phone: (213) 453-2960 Making the Right Choices is designed to provide young people with tools necessary to successfully handle the daily pressures of their teen lives. Participants will discuss spiritual and emotional ways to improve their relationships with family, friends, work colleagues, and dating partners. It is the desire of many schools and youth home facilities in the community to have the ability to implement social development and mentoring programs. Additionally, most schools and youth facilities would like to expand the support and the interests of young people by offering group counseling programs that are currently unavailable within their organizations. The Objective is to develop a strong and empowered young person within a safe nonjudgmental environment, who will be able to communicate clearly his/her desires for their future aspirations. The goal is to have an individual who will believe their dreams are attainable with proper goal setting and personal accountability. Choices, Mentors, and Distractions 1. Discuss Daily Choices 2. Discuss the Power of Gossip 4. Discuss Cyber bullying! Good Friends, Great Attitude, Strong Discipline = SUCCESS 1. Discuss the Company You Keep 2. Discuss Goal Setting Relationships Requires Character, Values and Healthy Self Esteem 1. Discuss Intentions and Motivations

Do You Have the Skills? 1. Discuss their creative, physical, intellectual and social skills 2. Create a resume and experience a mock interview with guest speakers You Deserve the Best! Now Go Get It! 1. Discuss an action plan for the year. Workshop will conclude with a culminating Certificate of Completion, a Teen Night Out on the Town and a Day of Voluntary Service in the community!

Learning Objectives Participants in this workshop will focus on the following California Health Education Content Standards: Nutrition and Physical Activity
1.1.N 1.13.N 5.2.N Distinguish between facts and myths regarding nutrition practices, products, and physical performance. Describe the amounts and types of physical activity recommended for teenagers overall health and for the maintenance of a healthy body weight. Use a decision-making process to plan nutritionally adequate meals at home and away from home. Describe physical, social, and emotional changes associated with being a young adult. Identify why abstinence is the most effective method for the prevention of HIV, other STDs, and pregnancy. Evaluate how culture, media, and other people influence perceptions about body image, gender roles, sexuality, attractiveness, relationships, and sexual orientation.

Use a decision-making process to evaluate the physical, emotional, and social benefits of abstinence, monogamy, and the avoidance of multiple sexual partners. Demonstrate effective negotiation skills for avoiding dangerous and risky situations. Demonstrate conflict resolution skills to avoid potentially violent situations. Explain the impact of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use on brain chemistry, brain function, and behavior. Identify the social and legal implications of using and abusing alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. Use effective refusal and negotiation skills to avoid riding in a car or engaging in other risky behaviors with someone who has been using alcohol or other drugs. Describe the benefits of having positive relationships with trusted adults. Analyze the qualities of healthy peer and family relationships. Describe healthy ways to express caring, friendship, affection, and love. Describe qualities that contribute to a positive self-image. Describe how social environments affect health and well-being. Set a goal to reduce life stressors in a health-enhancing way. Practice setting personal boundaries in a variety of situations. Evaluate the importance of regular medical and dental checkups, vaccinations, and examinations. Use effective communication skills to ask for assistance from parents, guardians, and medical or dental health care professionals to enhance health. Execute a plan for maintaining good personal hygiene (including oral hygiene) and getting adequate rest and sleep.
