What is Suggestopaedia ?

ProIessor Dr. Georgi Lozanov, a research psychologist and medical doctor at the University oI
SoIia Bulgaria, developed this model oI teaching already in the sixties.

This holistic approach oI teaching is applied more and more and is also well known as
Superlearning.
People have to deal with a lot oI suggestive inIormation. They save them consciously or
unconsciously as verbal or non-verbal messages in their brain. This suggestopedic teaching and
learning method is based on the Iacts that both the conscious and unconscious are very important
Ior the retention oI memory. It is also based on the Iact that participants who are in an attentive
relaxed state are empowered to learn more eIIectively without getting tired.

Positive suggestions which accelerate learning and develop potentials are Ior example a relaxed,
positive learning atmosphere which is created by the change oI tension and relaxation, active and
passive phases, journeys oI Iantasy, games, movement and simulation oI possible real situations.
As music creates emotional engagement and memory retention, it is a very valuable tool. E.g. it
makes the learners Ieel comIortable, it helps to overcome any inhibitions and it increases
motivation and reception. The diIIerent parts oI our brain are specialized to receive and to
manage inIormation as e.g. verbal, non-verbal, rational/emotional messages or as a word or
picture. In suggestopedic teaching individual learning styles are considered. All channels oI
learning are respected: the sense oI looking and seeing, hearing, Ieeling, smell and taste.
Teaching is interaction, working in groups and supporting each other.

By the holistic activation and coordination oI the leIt and the right part oI the brain, thus
increasing the retention oI memory, the method oI suggestopaedia shows new ways and open
doors in holistic teaching.

It was mainly used as an approach to teaching Ioreign languages, however it has been applied to
teach all disciplines (Superlearning). ScientiIic Iindings made show a considerably increased
eIIiciency oI learning. According to ProI. Dr. Ludger SchiIIer (FU Berlin): ,The increase oI the
saving capacity oI the long term memory' and according to ProI. Dr. Ruppr. S. Baur (University
Essen) ,A great part oI learners reach the target only aIter a two week intensive course and not
aIter 1 year oI training as it was planned.

ThereIore, the suggestopedic method oI learning is especially eIIective Ior trainings in both
proIessional and daily liIe.
