BOARD OF DIRECTORS
President-Jan Bush
B-3 Contractors, Inc. belle@aptalaska.net

From the Presidents Desk:

Did you know that October had 5 Sundays, 5 Mondays & 5 Saturdays. This happens only once every 823 years? Youve just experienced a rare month! This year we experience four unusual dates: 1/1/11, 1/11/11, 11/1/11, and the one still coming up this month: 11/11/11, and that's not all; Take the last two digits of the year you were born and the age you will be this year and the result will add up to 111 for everyone born prior to 2000!!!! In Chinese numerology, these particular years are known as Moneybag years! Congratulations if that is working for you! Thanks to all of you who returned the Board of Directors Election Ballot. Kim and Sharilyn have been given your blessing to continue their service for the next two years. Extensive work is underway on the 2012 Island Guide. The Chambers Island Guide committee needs some help! Please email 2012 activities and dates to the Chamber office for inclusion on the Events Calendar 2012. Take a look at page 30 of the 2011 Guide to get an idea of what we are looking for! Take a look at Page 9 of this newsletter to see what OUT IN THE RAIN has submitted for inclusion in our publication. Communities, please review your particular information included in the Island Communities pages starting on page 32. Give us your suggestions and community information to improve or update these profiles. The new Chamber website is up and running, in case you have not been there yet. There is some tweaking to take place and photos to add, but the transfer to google has taken place. We say good-by to Denise in December as she relocates to be closer to those precious grandchildren. Her last day in the office will be December 9th.

CHAMBER BOARD REGULAR MEETING

The regular monthly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors will take place at noon on Wednesday, NOVEMBER 9th at the Alaska Power and Telephone Conference Room in Craig. Election of officers for the 2011-2012 year will be held.

2012 SOUTHEAST CONFERENCE PLANNING

The first planning meeting for the 2012 SOUTHEAST CONFERENCE was held at the Craig City Council Chambers on Tuesday, October 11th. In attendance were: Jon Bolling, Machelle Edenshaw, Dennis Nickerson, Lynnette Logan, Jan Bush, Leslie Isaacs, Ken Owen, Brian Templin, Mike Kampnich, Victoria Merritt and Karen Peterson. The 2012 Conference will be hosted by Prince of Wales with the meetings to be held in Craig facilities. An inventory of POW accommodations is being carried out to find approximately 250 beds/rooms for the 3-day event. Meetings will begin the morning of September 25, 2012. Many of the attendees will arrive on September 24th, with some that will come in the morning of September 25th. Jan Bush will inventory Klawock accommodations. Ken Owen, Victoria Merritt and Brian Templin are working on the Craig list. Karen Peterson will gather up the information for Thorne Bay. Other volunteers are needed to perform an accommodations inventory in the other communities. Also discussed were shuttle needs, rental cars, venues for the Host Community Reception on September 25th, Scholarship Banquet and auction on the 26th, Meeting venue, Island activities, and event sponsors. Karen Peterson and Victoria Merritt volunteered to be the event coordinators for the Community Reception, and to solicit caterers for the banquet. Ken Owen will also work on the Banquet meal planning. Among many suggestions voiced about the community reception was the idea for each community to provide an appetizer that is famous for that locale or some of its citizens. The meeting was the first of many to pull together all the details needed to present a successful event. It is hoped that the POW community can offer an attractive menu of activities for Conference attendees and their families to experience before or after the Conference agenda. THE NEXT PLANNING MEETING WILL BE HELD ON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 14TH, 2011 AT 10:00AM AT THE CRAIG CITY COUNCIL CHAMBERS Join together to present a successful Island event!

VISITOR COMMITTEE REPORT...NOTES BY JEANNIE MCFARLAND October 13th , Thorne Bay

Alaska Travel Industry Association membership - Jeannie McFarland / Heather Hedges will be working on crafting the membership registration for this state wide organization. The Chamber was a member in the past and there is a need for us to be members again to get the exposure we need to stimulate our Visitor Industry. This Non-Profit organization is the states arm in promoting tourism and has an annual budget of 2 million dollars. Much of the money is spent in promotional ads on worldwide TV spots. You have all seen them and they are really making a difference in encouraging people to come to Alaska. Alaska Dream Cruises Kim Oliver is Director of Hotel Operations & Guest Programs for the Sitka based company, Allen Marine. This summer their 40 passenger catamaran will be making two stops on the east side of Prince of Wales Island. They may make more stops in the future but will be in Thorne Bay and Kasaan in 2012. They are looking for people that would be interested in doing a tour, charter fishing or sell crafts to the guests that will be in port for about 4 hours. She will be back to talk specifically to Thorne Bay residents in November about the specific offerings. She passed out the schedule so people could see how when they plan to dock. Kim has made arrangements for moorage with the cities of Thorne Bay & Kasaan. IFA update Roberta Landgren sent in a report to read as she was unable to attend. In September the IFA ferried more than 4200 passengers and 970 vehicles between Hollis and Ketchikan. So far, the first ten days of October were busy with 1657 passengers and 82 vehicles, some of them for the ANB/ANS convention in Klawock. We are beginning to see hunter reservations for the rest of October and November, so we hope the traffic will continue to stay busy until after Christmas. After the first of the year the IFA will be offering our Driver Goes Free program once again this winter. To combat escalating cost the IFA recently moved both its reservation and administrative offices to the Hollis Clark Bay Terminal. Island residents and visitors can contact the office for reservations by calling the 1-866-308-4848 number or going on-line to www.interislandferry.com. Remember the IFA will not be operating Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, so that our employees can be with their families. Northend Ferry Authority update Heather Hedges reported that the Authority was awarded a Loan from USDA. They will need to secure 100,000. in loan guarantees to receive the money and are working on that now. They are looking at May or June for the first sailing of the Rainforest Island Ferry. You can get more specific information on the ferry by going to the Coffman Cove website at; www.coffmancovealaska.com. USFS updates were given by Maeve Taylor. They just did their planning meeting for recreation programs next year. They will have Bear Viewing and Cave Tours. There will be new outhouses and an interpretive program for the Salt Chuck Mine. They will be partnering with the 4 tribes on the Island with the Deer Celebration which is on November 18th at the CTA building in Craig. Road closures have stimulated a program to turn some of the closed roads into ATV trails. They are working on a film fest for the International Year of the Forest and she will share that information when they finalize the plans. The next Visitors Committee Meeting will be held November 10th in Coffman Cove at the Harborview Hall 11am to 2pm. We hope to see you there, it is a beautiful spot right on the waterfront. For an emailed copy of the complete report contact Jeannie McFarland floatel@starband.net. 4

Prince of Wales Island Vocational & Technical Center Committee MeetingOctober 12th...notes by Jon Bolling
Present were Committee Chair Karen Cleary, Rich Carlson, Jim Holien, Mike Cleary, Vice Chairman Jim Thomas, Tom Klever, Jan Bush, Maeve Taylor, Jon Bolling. Committee Reports Center Management Plan Committee. Jon Bolling reported that the committee had met on Monday, October 10 and considered a draft request for proposals (RFP) for assistance with funding operation of the POW CTE, curriculum development, and budgeting. The committee made a number of changes to the draft RFP and approved bringing it to the full advisory committee for consideration. Rich Carlson suggested including in the RFP a timeline within with the specified work shall be complete. After some discussion the group settled on June 30, 2013, and agreed to include this date in the RFP. The Advisory Committee also estimated the amount of funding needed to complete the work. Jon reported that the Center Management Plan Committee had discussed funding during its October 10 meeting, and agreed that it would ask the City of Klawock to fund the position from the legislative grant made to the POW CTE project. Maeve Taylor advocated for adding the task of identifying other funding sources to the scope of work, in addition to the Alaska Education Tax Credit reference in the RFP. The full committee agreed to this suggestion. The group noted that a well-qualified contractor for this work must be politically astute, and be familiar with curriculum, and fund raising. Partnership Committee Maeve Taylor stated that the Partnership Committee met on September 27. She distributed notes from the meeting to the POW CTE Advisory Committee. Maeve stated that a group had met with Ms. Barbara Truitt from the Alaska Jobs Center in Ketchikan. Ms. Truitt provided information on vocational training and opportunities for other training, industry hiring trends, and offered advice on other useful training courses. Maeve also summarized a series of goals the Partnership Committee adopted: 1) write out a summary of the project for potential partners; 2) develop a list of partner contacts; 3) find more volunteers; 4) work with the media to make the project better known. Rich Carlson pointed out that some of these tasks will be taken up in detail by the contractor selected from the RFP process. Vote on Name of the Center Karen Cleary asked the committee to choose a name for the project. She provided three alternatives as a starting point for the discussion. The Advisory Committee voted unanimously to adopt the name Prince of Wales Island Vocational & Technical Center. Consideration of Request for Proposals. Karen asked for a motion to approve the RFP brought forward by the Center Management Plan Committee. Richard Carlson moved and Maeve Taylor seconded a motion to adopt the RFP. Jon Bolling stated he had removed the title Project Manager from the RFP. The suggestion was made that the title be changed to Project Coordinator, a title that the Advisory Committee accepted. The Advisory Committee unanimously approved the motion. Jon stated that he would complete the approved edits to the RFP and forward it to Leslie Isaacs the next day and ask Leslie to take it to the Klawock City Council for funding from the project grant. Next Meeting Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at 6:00 pm at the Klawock School Library. 7
