Parish Staff and Ministries

Reflection Are you pleading for the Lord to come to save you? Are you ready for the Lord to come and be with you? Are you aware of Gods saving grace present in your life? What is needed to bring Gods saving presence into your life more fully? This place is prison, this life is penance, and he wants us to rejoice in the remedy. The remedy is that our Lord is with us, protecting us and leading us into the fullness of joy; for our Lord intends this to be an endless joy, that he who will be our bliss when we are there is our protector while we are here, our way and our heaven in true love and faithful trust. ...Let us flee to the Lord and we will be comforted. Let us touch him and we shall be made clean. Let us cleave to him and we shall be safe in every kind of peril.1

THE ADVENT WREATH

The Advent Wreath, a venerable European tradition, can be a way to involve even very little children in learning about Christian preparation - not only for celebrating Our Lord's birth, but to make our hearts truly ready to receive Him. The wreath's symbolism of the advent (coming) of Light into the world is clear. The gradual lighting of the four candles, one on each Sunday of the Advent season, combined with the liturgical colors of the candles (purple is the penitential color used during Advent and Lent; rose is a liturgical color used only on Gaudete Sunday in Advent and Laetare Sunday in Lent) help to symbolize not only our expectation and hope in Our Savior's first coming into the world, but also in his Second Coming as Judge at the end of the world. The wreath itself is also symbolic. The circle of evergreen in which the candles are placed represents everlasting life. The seedpods, nuts and cones used to decorate the wreath are symbolic of resurrection, and fruits represent the nourishing fruitfulness of the Christian life. The Beatitudes: Blessed are the Merciful

A Commitment to Lift the Burden of Another
Each beatitude, which simply means supreme blessedness, begins with the phrase blessed are. These words imply that whoever participates in that right heart attitude will benefit from being in a perpetual state of receiving God's favor. It was this continual blessing that Jesus knew was going to fulfill the needs of His followers. The fifth beatitude is for those who are merciful. Jesus said, Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. (5:7) Someone who is merciful is one who maintains a heart attitude of mercy. It is not a one-time occurrence, nor is it just an outward display. They do not show mercy only to those whom they believe are deserving of it. Rather, they follow God's example through His Son, Jesus Christ. He continually gives mercy to those who need it though aren't deserving of it. To be merciful also implies an outward focus on the physical, emotional and spiritual state of others. One who is merciful is not selfish, nor are they self-absorbed. They are aware of the suffering of those in need and act to help meet that need. When the Good Samaritan saw the need of the fallen Jew, he sought to alleviate the man's discomfort, though he was an enemy, and committed himself to providing for his care until his health was restored. God promises that He will care for the needs of those who set aside their own needs to care for someone else. This kind of attitude comes from a heart that is fully trusting in God. They know that they themselves will not be left behind, and therefore they do not fear reaching out to others. Like the Good Samaritan, they commit themselves to caring for others until the burden is lifted. This is the kind of mercy that draws the attention of God. And His promise is to give back to those who selflessly give of their time, energy and resources to help others in need. Written by Amy Miller. Retrieved from http://www.sharefaith.com
