Er.Ganesh, Need for R.C.C. Tower building or Steel tower? You should be familiar with IS 1893-2002 codes since need to understand the basics and additionally should have good basics from good seismic books. Hope you will reply to send details. T .Rangarajan.

Thank you sir, i need this for a high rise building. I just want what is the standard procedure for designing such kind of bldg. I had gone through IS 1893-2002. pls elaborate the procedure for Staad Pro

Er.Ganesh, I am posting a short and very basic points w.r.t seismic load application in STAAD below but you have to study and learn more on EQ engineering. Since it needs more time and pages refer the manual and books for more information.

Seismic Load Generation in STAADPRO . It is necessary to DEFINE the SEISMIC Load thorugh the command that is available under LOAD menu. Should understand that there are two methods available for Seismic load application to structures. 1. 2. a. b. Equivalent static method . Dynamic load method ehich is further divided into Response Spectrum method. Time history method.
Each method has its own limitation depending on the type of structure. To know more on the above refer some good Seismic design books like Earthquake resistance Design of structure by Pankaj Aggarwal , and other good books in addition to IS 1893-2002 all parts. To apply in STAAD after defining the load case in X and Z direction have to be input depending on the structural configuration. To generate the seismic loads by the program you need to nput the necessary data like the Zone factor, Importance factor , Response reduction factor and the time period, soil or the base on which the structure rests and depth of footing etc . Study these in books, code and literature. It is not enough to input the values in the software but understand each and every one of the details to be input otherwise it will end up with GIGO. You can also calculate manually the value of the Base shear Vb which is equal to Ah =(ZISa/g )/2R and distribute to each floor of the Vb calculated and find out the nodal force at each joint and then apply as nodal force at each joints in the structure . But it may be easy for small structures but cumbersome for unsymmetrical both in plan and elevation . To apply Seismic load understand the seismic engineering well and use the software otherwise half baked manner will lead no good for the structure . Then you are doing unsafe building rather than doing good to the buildings and better do the SEISMIC detailing with gravity load for certain heights. Best of luck, T .Rangarajan.
