[STUDENTS CORNER ]

Dear Students, LAST WEEK WE ASKED:

Do you think the recessionary trends will impact the summer placements again this year? BEST RESPONSE I dont think summer placements will be affected by the recessionary trend this year. Thats because much of the recession period is over, and the bailout process has also helped. Also, its for the individual to choose his company and likewise, for the company to select the candidate that suits its needs the most. If the candidate and the recruiter click,
then a problem like recession will not matter. Amandeep Singh Anand, Shanti Communication School, Ahmedabad companies find it difficult to maintain a large employee base, how can they afford summer placements? Shivam Chhabra, Integral University, Lucknow Recessionary trends will not have much affect on Indian B-schools as the lessons learnt from the economic downturn in 2008-09 will come handy. But since India is partially integrated with the world economy and the Indian IT sector and consulting companies are partially flourishing because of the US economy and lending institutions, we cant neglect its devastating effect on the Indian IT sector. The real

OTHER RESPONSES The present recessionary trend will have an impact on summer placements this year, but only to a certain extent. It is likely to affect mediocre B-schools, albeit the scenario at top management schools like IIMs is bound to remain unaffected. Recently, major economies of the world have cut jobs, thereby forcing Indians to return to their country. In such a time, when

impact of recession will be on lowerrung B-school as the demand for human resource will come down. Moreover, the impact of recession is unpredictable and depends entirely on its severity. Nilaya Mitash Shanker, Shri Ram Swaroop Memorial College of Engineering And Management, (SRMCEM), Lucknow The recessionary period will definitely affect summer internship programmes because companies will not only cut down on recruitment but also on training costs. It would, however, be more difficult for the small and local institutes to place their students. Students may not get internships at places that they would prefer. Moreover, all the companies

will not be affected by the recessionary trend. Sarman Goraniya, Charusat University, Gujarat For recruiters its difficult to hire interns in recessionary times. But then, recessionary times also offer the best opportunity for applicants to prove their worth and get an advantage over others by exhibiting the best of knowledge and conveying how they can be an asset for the organisation. No matter what the world economy is going through, employers always need new people with new ideas. So this is not going to impact the best candidates.
