John Hilton
John H. “Chief Wise Bull” Hilton, 66, of Chappells, SC, passed Births
away October 17, 2008 at Hospice of the Piedmont in Greenwood SC
after a short illness.
He was born February 3, 1942 to the late Thelma Carter Hilton
Hartsfield and Jesse M. Hilton, Sr. in Folkston. John grew up
and worked several jobs in Charlton Co. including logging, State
Highway Dept., Humphries Mining Co., private construction on
the railroad and worked with Charlton Memorial Hospital as one
of the first EMT's. In 1969, he was employed with the railroad serv-
ing SCL, Family Line RR and CSX until retirement in 2000. John
spent the last 26 years living in South Carolina where he served as
a volunteer in many capacities with FEMA, and leading Boy Scout
Troops. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Associa- Pittman

Welcome to Satilla Regional’s Thomas W. Wehmann, DO

Mrs. Dorothy Thrift, 73, of the Hickox Community, died early

Saturday morning at Satilla Regional Medical Center, Waycross,
following a lengthy illness.

Born in Jacksonville she was the daughter of Joseph and Helen
Lovie Grimes Rogers. A member at Riverside Chapel Baptist
Church , she had started teaching Sunday School at the age of 12
and has served the Lord , not only as a Sunday School Teacher for
60 years but had a beautiful voice and loved to sing. She loved her
family dearly and enjoyed their trips to the mountains together,
and felt of "Mr. Scamp's" family the same as her family. Worked as
a Transcripts in Medical Records and was the owner of the Flower
Basket in Hickox before her health began to fail her.
Preceded by her parents, and also several brothers and sisters, a
very special brother, Bernie Crapse.
Survived by her loving husband and best friend, Gerald V. "Scamp"
Thrift; 3 daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl and Glenn Hickox,
Barbara and Chuck Bass and Terri and Richard Waters all of
Hickox; grandchildren, Billy and Tracy Hickox, Kim and Anthony
Dent, Carla and Brad Oglesby, Kevin Bass and Kayce Waters; great-
grandchildren, Kayla Hickox, Ricky and Sierra, Levi and Brooke
Oglesby and Mallory Dent; a sister and brother-in law, Dorothy and
Melvin Haire, of Jacksonville; a life long friend, Louise Perry and
Walter; also several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Her services were held at the church Monday morning (Oct. 20,
2008) at 11 a.m. with Rev. Randy Wainright, Rev. Ion Johns and Cliff
Adams officiating. Burial followed in the Riverside Church Cem-
etery. Pallbearers were Billy Hickox, Kevin Bass, Ronnie Eunice,
Lorne Johns, Mark, Derek, Pat, Vince, Jason and Thomas Thrift.
Honorary Pallbearers were the Deacons of Riverside Chapel
Baptist Church.

Satilla Regional Medical Center welcomes Thomas Wehmann, DO to the Surgery team.
A native of Ohio, Dr. Wehmann attended medical school at the Ohio University College
of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his residency in General Surgery at Cuyahoga
Falls General Hospital, and a fellowship in Peripheral Vascular Surgery at Southwest
General Hospital, both in Ohio.
Dr. Wehmann has three sons. Adam, 21, is a senior at Ohio State University. Andrew,
20, just began his second year at Akron University. His youngest son, Ben, 17, is a high
school senior in Akron, Ohio. Dr. Wehmann, his wife, Stacey, and her son, Christopher,

Saturday Night Live has jumped the shark. Office Manager Editor and Publisher
Not because it’s stopped being funny (some-
times it still is), and not because it never does
anything noteworthy anymore (on occasion it
still does).
 It’s all because of Sarah Palin. Actually, not
just Sarah Palin. This involves Barack Obama,
Rudy Giuliani, Hillary Clinton, Al Gore, John
McCain, Mike Huckabee and many other politi-
cians. If you are running for president or vice
president – or even thinking about it – we have
reached the point where you must do SNL. It
is part of the test of a prospective president’s
mettle.
 If you’re not required to stand there while
someone impersonates you, then you have to do
something absurd. You have to sit in a hot tub
like Gore did. (Hey! Did global warming make
that tub hot?) You have to sing karaoke like Mc-
Cain did. Or, like Palin, you have to stand there
talking to Alec Baldwin and resist the urge to say,
“I thought you were moving to France, tubby.”
 The problem here is not what the politicians
are doing. Some of it is funny. The problem is
SNL providing the venue. It means that SNL has
crossed a line and can never go back.
 Let us return for a moment to 1975, when
SNL was in its infancy, to recall what made it
such a groundbreaking show. It wasn’t just that
it was live, although that was a big deal. It was
more about the things the show wasn’t afraid to
do, especially given the times. The idea of put-
ting George Carlin on live television, knowing
what he would surely say, is hard to compare
to anything today in terms of edginess. Maybe
putting porn on primetime, network television
would be comparable in 2008, but I’m not even
sure about that.
 But it was also about the character of the
humor. Recall Dan Aykroyd putting a bass in a
blender in a commercial for the Bass-o-Matic,
and replying to Jane Curtin’s Weekend Update
commentary with “Jane, you ignorant slut.” Re-
call Garrett Morris as Anwar Sadat being tended

As far as holidays go, it’s no surprise
that Halloween has a bad image with some
parents. There are no talking bunnies or
jolly elves or anything sentimental about it.
Basically, it’s a holiday filled with, well, scary
stuff. And it’s easy to understand, with all of
those ghosts, goblins, and witches running
around, why some parents might think it are
inappropriate for children.
Well, I hate to break it to everyone, but the
real things that scare kids have nothing to do
with Halloween.
If you don’t believe me, take a look at my
son. For instance, when he was two years old

And I don’t need to tell you that, much
like all things having to do with children,
there’s no rhyme or reason to it. I mean, you
just can never tell when something as in-
nocent looking as, say, the bathroom plunger
will scare the beejeezus out of a kid, which,
yes, was something that terrified my son and
daughter when they were much younger. It’s
trial and error mostly.
But as a helpful guide for this Halloween,
I’ve made a list of what scares most kids, at
least at some time in their life. I’m betting
I’m not the only parent who has seen her
children scared of these things at one point
or another.
Don’t worry…

Sure, it’s easy to laugh. But, face it, we all

this is that there are several things that don’t

Heron Pride takes multiple awards

The Heron Pride just came
back from the 2008 Coastal Empire
Classic Marching Band Competi-
tion in Springfield, and swept away
the competition in their Class A
Division.
The band members competed
against four other bands from
Emanuel County Institute, Mary
Persons High School, Calvary Day
School, and Bryan County.
The Heron Pride’s own drum
line received a Superior rating and
received 1st in Class. Their color
guard received an Excellent rating
