LAKE COUNTY SUMMER OF PEACE June 22 September 21, 2012 In cooperation with the Global Summer of Peace Celebrated

d on all Continents and Culminating in the International Day of Peace on 9-21-12 For further information, contact: 707-262-0400 stjohnt@mchsi.eom July 9, 2011 The Lake County Summer of Peace invites you and your organization to join in the planning and execution of a unique and historic event in Lake County throughout the summer of 2012. Planning starts now. Joining other regions, countries, states and cities around the world, we have an opportunity to consciously and positively move with the shift that we all feel in human consciousness and become proactive in the overall social healing of our community toward an even more divine place to live and work. Your participation in the new sense of unity, freedom, independence and personal responsibility for our well being that has taken hold in various parts of the world, will be the driving force for change in our own hearts, homes and towns around the lake, our new economic vision now developing, and our ways of creating our Lake County future. We are the change. One great vision of Lake County, for example, has been to develop ourselves as a cultural colony around our beautiful mountain lake, with bistros and little places for musicians and artists and the public to meet and talk and enjoy the music. Lake County has attracted an unusual number of fine musicians and artists to the area, who are already setting the tone for this kind of environment, delicious for ourselves and for guests and tourists who want to see and enjoy the new wine country. Talent and interest in stage and radio have grown exponentially in the past few years, and KPFZ, the Soper-Reese, the Weaver Theatre, the Fairgrounds Little Theatre, the Tallman Hotel and the Lake County Arts Council have provided important gathering places for expanding audiences among new and old residents of the area. From small, intimate plays to huge musical productions on our stages, opportunities have abounded for the development of native talent discovered in adults and our youngest actors and directors. Interest in health and expansion of the human spirit and well being are evident everywhere, as demonstrated by the more than 300 non-profit organizations in the county and a growing number of exercise and health groups, including Quail Run and the Sutter Wellness program. The Lake County Co-op and food/farm groups are changing our habits about diet, foods and organic gardening. Transition Lake County is leading the way in our unique collaboration with earth and its elements: air, water, fire and water. Technology has not forgotten our remote county; we are a part of the vanguard of developing ideas and new ways to reach economic and human capacities for communication, music, news dissemination and health outlets. Several major senior centers and organizations to meet the needs of ethnic groups abound, along with 4-5 casinos, depending upon how you count them! Our Hispanic population is growing. We have an obligation for further inclusion of Native Americans and African American residents.

2 We now have a popular online newspaper, Lake County News, adding to our traditional print source, the Lake County Record Bee. We are blessed with a superb symphony orchestra and many vocal groups and individuals, including operatic and popular singing groups. Musicians and small and large bands abound. Vineyards and wineries replace some of the pear and walnut homesteads of the county. Our entire county is changing! For all our charm and history and practical purposes, we are a new entity, culturally, psychologically and economically! Nonetheless, who and what we are as a community may look ancient in five years. Our world is changing so rapidly that we now have an opportunity to become active social healers and are called to action to take part in this massive transition during our lifetimes. Culturally, psychologically, politically, socially, physically, we are called to participate in the deep changes within and around us. While we are changing, we also are at a crossroads to shape and create ourselves, our towns and the county we love, opening our doors to tourists, new business, new low-impact industry and restored property values in our beautiful countryside. Lake County Summer of Peace offers countless opportunities for you to communicate your vision of the county and how you would like to influence that change. This is an opportunity for individuals and communities to exercise their true right to We the Peopledemonstrate our choice, will, commitment and common determination to create a peaceful, caring, mindful community that is fun, healthy, positive and economically beneficial to all. The transition will take place at the initiative of individuals and organizations throughout the County that want to create change toward inner and outer tranquility, openness, tolerance, humor, inclusion, cooperation, givingness and forgiveness, harmony, creativity, mentoring, compassion, reduction of family and other violence and bullying, the general prosperity of the area and any other positive and peaceful change you wish to manifest. For the Lake County Summer of Peace, through radio, television, film, video, live stage and online programs, you can create and develop workshops, lectures, plays, concerts, and video programs on health, communications, relationships, area development, exercise, music, childrens art, adult art, sculpture, cross-culture programs, dance, drumming, singing, education about health and relationships, and through joining the planning and execution of the summer of peace here and abroad. Even your business can take part in demonstrating your dedication to peace and its qualities through your products and services. Lake County can also link with another city, town or region abroad to share ideas and programs in the global Summer of Peace. We have booked our first event of the summer, and many more are in the wings: The first registration for the Lake County Summer of Peace is Peace Dances in the Park, native dancing to the poetry of Thich Nhat Hanh, led by Barbara Christwitz, a teacher at Yuba College and a Founding Member of the Lake County Coop. Two separate events will take place: (1) Clearlake Austin Park, Saturday, September 14, 2012 4-5:30 pm. Lakeport Library Park, Sunday, September 15, 2012 in Museum Park, 4-5:30 pm. Drumming will follow both events. Bring your drums and rhythm instruments. Many other events have been committed, but are not yet on the calendar. A safe and dependable economic environment is essential to peace of mind here as elsewhere, and new activity is anticipated to create an influx of tourists and family/friend visitors during the Summer of Peace, a boost to the local economy. We are all in this together, and welcome your ideas and participation. We are in the process of planning a Proclamation to be heard before the Board of

3 Supervisors next Tuesday, August 23 at 9:10 am, and ask you to please attend and support the event. We are also contacting officials at the City Councils of Lakeport and Clearlake and other organizations, including the Lake County . There will be no cost for services for this program, except perhaps a modest donation for registration to cover administration (paper, printing, inks, and web hosting) for emailing/scheduling/ publicizing events throughout the year. Hopefully, attendance for most programs will be free or low cost; and each participant program underwrites its own events, and make its own agreements with venues or parks, equipment, concessions and materials, according to its own needs and resources. Please let us know how you would like to interface so that coordination can help avoid event conflict and overlap, and the programs are publicized through the entertainment and general news media, newsletters, Chambers of Commerce and other non-profits, vineyards and wineries and other benefiting groups. Heres to Lake County and our Summer of Peace 2012! Taira St. John 262-0400 stjohnt@mchsi.com

Our overarching goal is to activate the largest global commitment to Peace in one season in the history of humankind mobilizing grassroots participation of millions of people worldwide.

DRAFT AS OF September 8, 2011

MISSION The mission of the Summer of Peace 2012 is to accelerate the shift from a culture of violence to a culture of Peace. This ambitious aim will be accomplished through collaborative efforts of numerous visionary leaders and partner organizations, including The Shift Network, *Culture of Peace Initiative (CPI), The Peace Alliance and International Cities of Peace to name a few. Together, we will acknowledge and celebrate the enormous strides that have been made in the emerging science and art of Peacebuilding around the world and encourage people globally to embody personal Peace and to create acts of Peace and compassion in their homes, communities, workplaces, for the environment and beyond. * stewarded by Pathways To Peace GUIDING PRINCIPLES The Summer of Peace 2012 is founded on the following principles: Peace is a multi-dimensional process, from inside out to outside in, from bottom up to top down. A holistic approach to Peace is the most effective path to Peace. All sectors of society have their role in creating the foundations for Peace, from schools and government to business, from science to religion. All benefit as our culture becomes more Peaceful. We are all connected; each individual affects the whole and the whole affects each individual. The world is interconnected and interdependent, even more so today because of rapid technological advances. Conflict is neither positive nor negative; it is a natural result of differences. When approached constructively conflict can be a source of growth and transformation. 1

PEACE SECTORS The Summer of Peace 2012 will focus on campaigns, events and experiences that cover the Peace Wheel, a model for Peacebuilding developed by Pathways To Peace over the last 25 years. It consists of eight sectors, or pathways, that are interconnected. The Peace Wheel demonstrates the diverse ways that humanity is building a Culture of Peace along one or more of these pathways. 1. Health/Relationships 2. Education/Media 3. Economics/Business 4. Science/Technology 5. Governance/Law/Security 6. Religion/Spiritual Teachings 7. Environment/Habitat 8. Culture SUMMER OF PEACE FRAMEWORK - CAMPAIGNS, EVENTS & EXPERIENCES The Summer of Peace 2012 will include a series of events and campaigns that kick off on June 22 and culminate on the International Day of Peace on Sept 21, 2012. Experiences will be designed to bring attention to the tremendous existing Peacebuilding efforts in the world and to inspire people to examine how they find Peace within and to become engaged in promoting Peace in their own lives and communities. By featuring and highlighting the Peace efforts of men, women and youth around the world, together with those of top Peacebuilders and Peacebuilding programs, The Summer of Peace 2012 will foster a global movement towards a culture of Peace. The following major campaigns and events will be produced by The Shift Network and other named partners during the Summer of Peace 2012: 1) INNER PEACE CAMPAIGN: an inside out strategy will harness the most effective practices for inner transformations that contribute to Peace for the individual. This campaign will start in June 2012 with a major event titled: Finding Inner Peace. This event, hosted in San Francisco, will involve leading transformational teachers and spiritual leaders who will discuss the practical means of finding inner Peace. It will conclude with a call to action for people around the world to pledge how they will cultivate inner Peace. Our goal is to activate personal Peace pledges worldwide. This event will be complemented by a smaller event focused on The Science of Peace, a conversation lead by leading neuroscientists. 2

Compassion is a primary component of Peace in transforming conflict; we embrace the tenets of the Charter for Compassion. Gandhi said acts of love and service are much more common in this world than conflicts and quarrels. There are tremendous efforts of Peace happening around the world and The Summer of Peace 2012 will celebrate and spotlight our collective Peace efforts and Peace pioneers who are leading the way.

2) PEACE EDUCATION CAMPAIGNS a bottom up approach that focuses on grassroots community-oriented involvement. Campaigns will highlight the exponential growth of practical approaches to resolving conflicts peacefully, including peace and conflict resolution education, community mediation, alternative dispute resolution and other conflict resolution/transformation initiatives. Campaigns also will provide access to curricula, tools and other resources that families, students, teachers, schools and the general public can use to engage in The Summer of Peace 2012. Examples of activities include: Peace Week 2011: Honoring the long tradition of Peace weeks connected with the Culture of Peace Initiative (CPI) and the many diverse organizations that have been participating since 1984, The Shift Network will be offering their 2nd annual Peace week. This program will bring to light and promote people and organizations doing inspiring Peacebuilding work along the peace continuum -- from inner to international embracing everything in between (neighborhood, community and national efforts.) Peace Week 2011 will be offered to the entire Shift Network database and all partner organizations for free. Peace Ambassador programming: The Shift Network will offer three Peace Ambassador Trainings leading up to SOP 2012 with the goal of training future Peace leaders and deploying Peace Ambassadors into SOP 2012 activities around the world. Inspirational free Peace programming and trainings will be offered by The Shift Network during Summer of Peace 2012. Leveraging the power of Subtle Activism, we will leverage these calls to send collective energy and healing to some of the most stressed areas in our world. Peace Resource Center: In partnership with the Culture of Peace (CPI), an online resource center will highlight and promote effective peace and conflict resolution education, community mediation, alternative dispute resolution and other programs that are working in communities and schools around the world. The center will showcase existing effective Peace programs and resources with the goal of promoting and scaling these programs via media and outreach efforts. Three to five key programs will be endorsed and promoted through case studies during SOP 2012. Peace Hub: Working with a savvy technology team and committed skilled volunteers, we will strengthen the Culture of Peace Initiatives (CPI) database of peace and conflict resolution education, community mediation, alternative dispute resolution and other Peacebuilding organizations worldwide. 3) CITIES OF PEACE a top-down and bottom-up approach that leverages existing models and invites citizens to work with their local governments to establish new cities of Peace worldwide. For this program, we will partner with International Cities of Peace out of Dayton, OH. http://www.internationalcitiesofPeace.org/ and set a goal for a number of new committed cities of Peace. 4) PEACE 2.0: What is your 2012 Commitment to Peace? This outside in approach will be a call to action for people globally to commit to and share their creative endeavors for making Peace possible in their home, city, community, school and with the environment. Efforts 3

will be highlighted with video submitted to Summer of Peace TV. This campaign will be complemented by the following efforts: What Does Peace Look/Sound Like Campaign an artistic expression of Peace across cultures and mediums. The Face of Peace Campaign hosted by The Peace Alliance. Push4Peace Campaign hosted by a variety of Peace organizations. Summer of Peace TV & Media Campaign To activate global Participation, The Summer of Peace 2012 media team will leverage print, radio, TV and film as well as web technology such as YouTube and social media to reach audiences worldwide. Numerous events, including Finding Inner Peace & The Science of Peace will be available free online and covered by media organizations. Peoples personal pledges to inner Peace and commitments to action in their lives will be shared online via an interactive map showing who is doing what, when and where. A team of reporters from universities, colleges, youth media organizations and The Shift Network Peace Ambassador Program will generate and distribute stories about The Summer of Peace 2012 activities and submit them to Summer of Peace TV. This is an area where youth will be invited to participate deeply.

WHAT IS YOUR COMMITMENT TO THE SUMMER OF PEACE 2012? As part of the Summer of Peace 2012, we invite individuals, Peace Ambassadors, partner organizations, schools, businesses and communities to share with us the ways that you are promoting Peace and to identify creative ways to participate in this global celebration of and commitment to Peace.
