HowTheMoonAffectsOceanTides... Theword"tides"isagenerictermusedtodefinethealternatingriseandfallinsealevelwithrespecttotheland,producedbythegravitational attractionofthemoonandthesun.Toamuchsmallerextent,tidesalsooccurinlargelakes,theatmosphere,andwithinthesolidcrustoftheearth, acteduponbythesesamegravitationalforcesofthemoonandsun. SpringTides Whenthemoonisfullornew,thegravitationalpullofthemoonandsunare combined.Atthesetimes,thehightidesareveryhighandthelowtidesare verylow.Thisisknownasaspringhightide.Springtidesareespeciallystrong tides(theydonothaveanythingtodowiththeseasonSpring).Theyoccur whentheEarth,theSun,andtheMoonareinaline.Thegravitationalforcesof theMoonandtheSunbothcontributetothetides.Springtidesoccurduring thefullmoonandthenewmoon.
