What to Do

Quickly see a dentist. Best retention if reimplanted within the first 30 minutes. Handle avulsed tooth only by the crown so there is no damage to the root tissue. If the tooth is dirty, gently clense with saline solution or saliva. If possible, put the tooth back in the socket and gently hold in place until you arrive to a dental office. Keep tooth in a moist isotonic saline solution or saliva. If not possible place in cold fresh milk.

Avulsed Tooth
Dentists refer to a knocked out tooth as an avulsed tooth. This is one of the most serious dental emergencies for permanent teeth. However, the damaged can be fixed. If you act quickly, there is a good chance the tooth can be saved. When a tooth has been knocked out, the nerves, blood vessels, and supporting tissues are damaged too. The nerves and blood vessels cant be repaired, but if your dentist can put the tooth back in place after an hour it was knocked out, there is a good chance that the supporting tissues will reattach and hold the tooth in place.

What to Do
Get to a dentist as soon as possible. Pick up the tooth by the crown, the part of the tooth that you can see in the mouth. Avoid touching the root. If the tooth is dirty do not clean it. This can damage the tooth. Place the tooth back in the socket, because the tooth has a better chance of surviving if it is kept in its natural environment. If you cant get the tooth back in the socket try and tuck it between the cheek and the gums and keep saliva on it. Another option is to put the tooth in a container of milk. The most important thing is to keep the tooth moist.

Save-A-Tooth
Save-A-Tooth is a commercial product is available for storage of an avulsed tooth. The manufacturer states that the tooth may be reimplanted up to 24 hours after avulsion if it is kept in this solution.

What your Dentist Will Do

Putting the tooth back in place and splint it to the adjacent teeth. This keeps the tooth stable so it can heal and reattach. The tooth doesnt always reattach the same way. If it doesnt it may fuse to the jawbone. Your dentist will monitor the tooth and may suggest further treatment. The nerves and blood vessels that were injured usually cant heal. Root canal treatment is often needed to prevent the tooth from changing color or developing an abscess.

Make Your Own Saline Solution

1.5 teaspoons of salt 4 cups of clean water Mix water and salt in a clean container and emerge tooth into solution. Tap water is acceptable but bottled water is better.
