Caruso English 1101-044 1 November 2011 Genre Defense The initial text was a photograph of three Marines in the midst of a firefight in which they were tending to a wounded comrade while surrounded by a dense haze of dust. Its genre was that of a combat photograph with many characteristics both physical and emotional.

Considering the initial text, its genre, and its characteristics, one can determine that it accurately portrays the horrors of war as well as the compassion of humanity. The horror of war is shown through the blood covering the wounded Marine as well as the fear in the faces of the ones treating his wounds. The sympathy of compassion of humanity is demonstrated through the Marines treating the injured. This text accurately portrays its purpose but there are some issues with it that can be better addressed through its recreation though another text. The issues with the original text are as follows: it is weak in portraying its purposes compared to other texts that but in the same genre, it shows only one still image which limits the characteristics that can be pulled from its, it is also limited because the viewer derives whatever story he or she wants when examining the text unless they are given the Rhetorical Analysis paper along with the text. These issue and problems dont discredit the text but gives ammunition to the thought that through recreation of the genre by identifying another text, that it would convey the purpose more clearly without dispute.

By recreating the text through a different genre it can convey the purpose of the text more descriptively through the characteristics of the new genre. The new genre is that of combat videos, this genre eliminates the issues previously identified from the original text. This genre recreation emphasizes the purpose of the text dramatically more than the genre of combat photographs. It narrows down the story that can be derived from the text to more be specific to what the creator of the text intends. The fact that its a moving motion picture collaborated from several different cameras and angles makes it more entertaining and the viewer can see many more characteristics of the text that the author intends as well. Additionally this genre recreation targets many more audiences that it previously did, allowing this new text to be viewed by and have a more profound impact among many more viewers. The previous genre of combat photographs could be described, by some, as weak compared to other genres. It is weak in the aspect of lack of motion making it somewhat boring and limited to the audience that it can target and not emphasizing its purpose meant to be conveyed. By recreating the genre as a combat video the texts purpose becomes much more clear and realistic, in which emphasizes the text dramatically. The combat video shows the realism of combat that most can never and will never realize through personal experience. This realism live combat footage captured, facial expressions of fear stress intensity of the Marines, loud noises and screaming, and fatigue through fog of war emphasizes the purpose that the text is meant to convey. This purpose that is emphasized by the genre recreation is the realism of combat and the horrors of war. After examining the original text one can derive many stories from the photograph. The author has a certain story, intended to be derived by the viewer. The problem with the original text is that it is a still image which makes many stories that can be derived after examining the

Stokes text. Some of the actions can obviously be put together to make some sequence of events but overall its up to the viewers imagination to determine whatever story he or she wants. By recreating the genre through combat videos this narrows down the story that can be derived by

the viewer. The live action combat footage captured in the combat video shows a compilation of realistic combat footage. It shows Marines running, shouting, shooting, and maneuvering on the enemy in numerous different combat scenes. The viewer can see much more clearly the story intended to be derived from this genre recreation. The story is that of Marines participating in combat operations. The original genre of combat photographs has several characteristics that can be derived from its specific text. The issue with the original text, concerning its characteristics, is that the original text is limited to the characteristics that can be derived from it. The reason that it is limited is because it is a single still image of Marines participating in combat operations. By recreating the genre into that of a combat video it allows the viewer to see numerous images of Marines participating in combat operations. These live combat videos of combat operations shows viewers of the text vivid details and characteristics. From the original text one could assume that the Marines are in combat and surrounded by loud noises and confusion. In the genre recreation into a combat video the viewer can again see the Marines in the midst of combat operations but now the viewer can hear the noises that the were previously assuming were occurring. The viewer can now hear the shouting, explosions, and gunshots; the viewer becomes consumed by the realism of combat. The characteristics that can be derived from the genre recreation are numerous. These numerous and more descriptive characteristics add to the detail of the new text and the emphasizing of the texts purpose.

An audience is defined as a gathering of spectators or listeners for a performance or some sort of viewing. The difference concerning to a text is that every text has an audience that it is intended to reach. This basically means that depending on the genre of a text depends on how well and or who will relate to this sort of genre the best. This explains how an issue can be derived from the original text. This issue is that the original text only targets a narrow or limited audience because it is a photograph. The genre of combat photographs accurately conveys its intended purpose but it is somewhat boring compared to other genres making it unable to target certain audiences. The genre recreation is more action filled and exciting which would specifically target a younger more modern audience along with an aged and more conservative audience. The original text would more likely only target the more conservative audience, this shows in only one aspect how the genre recreation can more effectively target a broader audience and in turn have a more profound impact on the viewers. The genre recreation represented the text in a much more profound and meaningful way. It emphasized the purpose the text was meant to convey; it narrowed down the story the author intended for the viewer to see; portrayed many more characteristics; and targeted a much broader audience. All of these aspects of the genre recreation better represent the text.
