Mumbai came to an abrupt halt, as
unprecedented heavy rains (944mm in 24
hours) stopped the rail & road traffic, silenced
mobiles & landlines and tripped power lines.
People were stuck at workplaces, stations, in
cars.
Some stats:
406+ human casualties
52 local trains damaged
4,000 taxis
900 BEST buses damaged
10,000 trucks and tempos grounded

The Mumbai FIoods since then have been the
taIking point for one & sundry, but very few
have come forward with an effective action
pIan to aIIeviate the fear.
SAFE DRIVE is one such initiative by ApoIIo
Tyres Ltd. and CVONDM (a Mumbai based
NGO) which aims to create awareness
amongst motorists on safe driving measures
and safety tips in a disaster Iike situation
through a SAFE DRIVE handbook.
The Handbook contains all emergency numbers
across Mumbai and some life saving

Ensure that you keep a First Aid Kit in your
car
People with diabetes, blood pressure,
asthama etc. should keep a stock of their
prescribed drugs in their car
nstead of trying to reach home, first reach
your nearest acquaintance. Minimize travel
Lower your window panes while driving
through water logged area
Carry out a pre monsoon check of your car
batteries, tyres, wipers etc.
nstall in your car a mobile battery charger
and ensure your FM radio is in working
condition to tune in for announcements
