Background UrsulaFrayneCatholicCollegeaimstoeducatetheCollegecommunityinmakinghealthyeating aneasyandinformedchoice. Researchshowsthatahealthyeatingplanassistsstudentstoperformandbehavebetterat school.TheCollegeaims,viaamultifacetedprogram,atpreventionratherthancureby attemptingtoinfluenceandshapestudentsattitudeswithfoodselectionswhichcanaffect lifestyleandbehaviourslaterinlife. Principles Tofosterthepreventionandcontrolofdietrelateddiseasesinstudents. Toraiseawarenessofthehighincidenceofchildhoodobesityanditshealthimpactsinto adulthood. Tomodelgoodeatinghabitsbyensuringtheavailabilityandsaleoffoodsandbeverages intheCollegescanteensthatareconsistentwiththeDepartmentofEducationand TrainingsHealthyFoodandDrinkstandards ToprovidetheCollegecommunitywithinformationaboutfoodandnutritionanditsrole inpreventingandcontrollingdietrelateddiseases. Toprovideeconomicallyviable,hygienicandnutritionorientedfoodthroughtheCollege canteensandatschoolevents. Procedures ToachievetheaimofthispolicytheCollegeshallendeavourtoadheretothefollowing procedures: 1. EnsurethattheCollegecurriculumisrichwithlearningopportunitiesthatencouragesand aidsstudentsinmakingwisechoiceswhenselectingfoodanddrink. 2. MakehealthyfoodaneasyoptionforstudentsandstafftopurchaseviatheColleges canteenbyadheringtotheDepartmentofEducationandTrainingsHealthyFoodand Drinkstandards.(Refertothewebsite: http://www.det.wa.edu.au/healthyfoodanddrink/index.html) 3. WhenprovidingfoodthroughtheCollegecanteenoratschooleventsemphasisshallbe giventothefollowingfoodsthatcontributesignificantlytomeetingstudentsnutritional needs: Breadsandcerealfoods,e.g.rice,pasta,especiallywholegrainvarieties Fruitpreferablyfresh,butincludingfrozenandcanned Vegetablesfresh,frozenandcanned Reducedfatvarietiesofmilk,cheese,yoghurt Leanmeats,skinfreepoultry,fish,eggs,bakedbeansandotherlegumes Plainwater

4. Prohibitingstudentsfromleavingtheschoolgroundstobuytheirlunches. 5. Promotingthedrinkingofwaterasthefirstandbestchoice. 6. TheCollegeadoptstheTrafficLightfoodratingsystemfordeterminingthesuitability andnutritionalvalueofthefoodprovidedbytheCollegeCanteenoratschoolevents. Themajorityofchoicesavailableshallbebasedonthecorefoodgroupsandbe predominantlythoseclassifiedasGreen,whichmaybesupplementedbyconvenience productswhichmaybeclassifiedaseitherGreenorAmber.NoitemsclassifiedasRed maybesold.Someexamplesareprovidedinthetablebelow:

8. SomeredratedfoodsmaybesoldatspecialCollegeevents,buttheseitemsshouldbe limitedwithamplegreenandamberchoicesavailable.Sucheventsinclude,butarenot limitedtoFrayneDayandsomefundraisingactivities.

9. Ensurefoodprovidedthroughvendingmachinescomplywiththetrafficlightfoodrating system.

10. Peoplepreparingfoodthroughthecanteenorforschooleventsshallensure appropriatefoodsafetyandhygienestandardsaremaintained.Thismeansthatit isprepared,cooked,transportedandservedinsuchawayastoretainnutrients andtominimisebacterialcontaminationandgrowth. 11. TominimisetherisksofanaphylacticeventstheCollegewillavoidprovidingfood itemssuchasnutsandsavourynutspreads. 12. Nofoodbakedbyparentsintheirhomewillbeacceptedforsalethroughthe canteen/foodservice.
