Supervised Work Experience Reflective Diary 2010 - 2011

Introduction
When I was at school doing my A levels applying for university through the UCAS system, ISG approached my head of sixth form with the possibility of sponsoring a student at university. After going through all the students UCAS applications, the students that wanted to do a construction related degree where picked to attend an interview at the ISG head office based in Aldgate. The interview process lasted a day, during the day we were taken around ISG sites in London to get an idea of what live construction sites are like. Once we arrived back at head office, we all sat down and were asked questions about why we wanted the job. There was myself and 4 other students competing for one summer placement with an option of sponsorship afterwards, therefore I needed to ensure that I carried out some background research so that I went to the interview prepared. I always wanted to go into construction due to my family having a construction background. When I found out there was a degree in construction management I knew it was the subject I wanted to study and develop a career in. After two successful summer placements, ISG offered me a job at one of their projects during my work placement year. I chose to take the opportunity as my two previous placements where successful, working in London in the fit-out division for the client KPMG. ISG has a placement programme that will benefit me in the long run, making sure I get experience in all areas of the build during the construction process, for example I will increase my technical services knowledge through experiences on site and background reading. During my year working with ISG, I want to gain a fully rounded understanding and working knowledge of the construction industry, which I can look at taking back with me for my final year of university. I want to establish positive working relationships with trades on site so that I come out of my year out with valuable contacts that are in the industry.

Description of company
ISG provides clients with a fit-out service throughout the UK, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. I have been based at ISG Interior during my time with the company, which mainly concentrates on projects based in the London area. The projects ISG Interior are involved in vary in both size and value, with the first project I worked on valued at 40 million, and the 2nd valued at 6.3 million. As a company we have a number of goals we need to meet in order to stay competitive, the quality of the finish is vital as a fit out company because unlike new build, we are delivering a finished product, which needs to be defect free and ready for people to move in to. The company provides a trainee scheme for all placements on their year out. At the start of the placement year I met with HR and was introduced to my Line Manager. From here I was given a placement document which has been used as a guide to maximise my potential in order to achieve all of the goals set. ISG also provide operatives with quarterly reviews, this consists of a meeting my Project Manager and my Line Manager. I was required to fill out a template, with how I have been getting on with the work I had been set, this was discussed and at the end I was set a number of goals which I needed to achieve by a target date.

Conclusion
Working with ISG has been a very valuable experience. I have been working closely with the construction team, carrying out roles on site whilst expanding my technical knowledge which I will take back with my when I go back to University to complete my final year. The jobs I have been involved in have been very high profile, which means I have experienced a number of different organisations within the construction industry. These include all of the subcontractors on site, district surveyors, architects, auditors, and Mechanical and Electrical consultants to name a few. My placement year has given me an insight to all of these professions and a better understanding of the processes involved during the construction of a project. I think in my role I have developed a good understanding of processes on site, and how to successfully manage a construction site so that deadlines are constantly met. I have worked closely with the construction managers during my time with ISG. I have gained the trust of my team, trades and consultants on site when it comes to making important design decisions. I have been given a number of responsibilities during my time with ISG, most recently overseeing the construction of levels 4 and 5 on the RBC Dexia job. I have been working on the floors with the Construction Manager, my role has been to look after the vend areas and containment to walls as well as general day to day running of the site. I have gained respect from all of the trades operatives and supervisors and am seen to be the first point of contact for these areas of construction. Another area I was heavily involved with was the close out of defects on an existing job, as well as looking after the post contract day 2 works. I was the single point of contact for the client as well as the project manager. I have created a number of good working relationships with all of the trade contractors as well as the consultants on both jobs I have been involved in. Creating good professional relationships is an important part of being a construction manager as it helps you achieve the best out of people and get the results you are aiming for to ensure a successful project completion.
