"Diatonic" scales are built from three primary triads at the first,fourth and fifth note (or degree) of each scale. If you take a Natural minor scale and convert it to major, you "sharpen" the thirds. Since every note on the piano has a scale, no matter how you "spell" it, we get a handful of scales that have double sharps and double flats.
