All praise belongs to Allah the Lord of all the worlds, He commanded (us) with having
Taqwaa of Him, and has promised those who have Taqwaa an abundancy of good; And I
bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped in truth except for Allah alone who
has no partners neither do we worship (anything) except for Him. In addition, I bear
witness Muhammad is His servant and Last messenger who is the most pious towards
Allah from out of creation, May there be abundant prayers and salutations upon him, his
family, and his companions.

The meaning of Taqwaa

As for that, this follows:

O Mankind, have Taqwaa
1
of Allah just as He commanded you with to have Taqwaa of
Him in many verses and just as the prophet has advised and ordered you. Therefore,
Taqwaa is the order/commandant of Allah and of His messenger; and its meaning is that
you make a shield between you and that which will harm which will come between you and
it (i.e. harm).
Having Taqwaa of Allah is that you do whatever Allah has commanded you with as well
as staying away from whatever Allah has forbidden you from doing. Indeed Allah has
enjoined (us) with having Taqwaa of Him throughout many verses from His Noble Book
(i.e. Qur'an) and has connected to having Taqwaa an abundancy of worldly good as well as
in the hereafter.

1
Translator's note: Talqa Bin Habib a noble Tabee' (i.e. a second generation muslim) said about the word Taqwaa, "it
means that you obey Allah out of light from Allah, hoping for Allah's reward & that you turn away from the
disobedience of Allah out of light from Allah, fearing of Allah's punishment."

Taqwaa is connected to learning
knowledge

Therefore, Allah has connected to it (Taqwaa) the achievement of beneficial knowledge,
similar to what Allah says:
{ z
"So be afraid of Allh; and Allh teaches you."
[Al-Baqarah 2:282]

Meaning of "be afraid of Allah" is regarding doing that which He has commanded you
with and abandoning that which He has forbidden you from
{ z
"And Allh teaches you."

He teaches that which you are in need of from knowledge.

Taqwaa is connected to vitality of the
heart, knowing the difference between
truth and falsehood & removal of sins

Just as Allah connected to Taqwaa liveliness to the heart and the hearts' ability to
distinguish between truth and falsehood, as well as Allah connected Taqwaa to
extinguishment of evil deeds and forgiveness of sins. Allah says:
{ zyxw vut srqpo nml
~ }|{ z
"O you who believe! If you obey and fear Allh, He will grant you Furqn a
criterion [(to judge between right and wrong), and will expiate for you your sins,
and forgive you, and Allh is the Owner of the Great Bounty."
[Al-An'fal 8:29]

Taqwaa promises a way out of hardship &
provides rizq

Just as Allah has promised the person of has Taqwaa that He will make a way out for him
(i.e. the person who has Taqwaa) from calamities and tribulations, and will grant him the
obtainment of Rizq (i.e. provisions) from where he cannot imagine.
Allah says:
{ ( _ _ _ ` _ _ z
"And whosoever fears Allh and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him
to get out (from every difficulty). And He will provide him from (sources) he never
could imagine."
[At-Talaaq 65:2-3]
Just as Allah promised the one who has Taqwaa of Allah that He will make easy upon
him the affairs of the Dunya' and the affairs of the Hereafter, Allah says:
{ _ _ _ . _ _ z
"And whosoever fears Allh and keeps his duty to Him, He will make his matter
easy for him."
[At-Talaaq 65:4]

Having Taqwaa due to one's ability

Allah has indeed enjoined upon the servants that they should have Taqwaa of Him as He
should be deservingly feared according to their capacity; therefore they should not abandon
having Taqwaa of Allah while at the same time they are able. Allah says:
{ ZYXWVUT z
"O you who believe! Fear Allh (by doing all that He has ordered and by
abstaining from all that He has forbidden) as He should be feared."
[Ali Imraan 3:102]

Moreover, Allah says:
{ z
"So keep your duty to Allh and fear Him as much as you can."
[At-Taghabun 64:16]

Thus, the meaning of these two verses to fear Allah as He should be feared as much as you
can. Just like what the prophet enjoined upon the servant that he should fear Allah
consistently in any circumstance, in any location, and throughout all things.
The prophet said:
,. : ...

- .| _.|
"Fear Allah wherever you may be
2
"
Meaning, wherever you may be the person should not outwardly show Taqwaa when he is
in the company of the people and contradict that (i.e. Taqwaa) when he absent from the
people, because Allah is always watching over him throughout all circumstances.

Hadith of Abi Dhar (found in Sunan Abi Dawud, Musnad Imam Ahmad, Sunan Tirmidhi, al-Hakim, and al-

Having Taqwaa of al-ar'ham

O Muslims, there are some things that Allah commanded that you should have Taqwaa of.
From those things you should have Taqwaa of is Al-ar'ham (i.e. those who are close kin to
you). Allah says:
{ X W VUTS z
"And fear Allh through Whom you demand your mutual (rights), and (do not cut
the relations of) the wombs (kinship)."
[An-Nisaa 4:1]

Meaning, you should have Taqwaa of Allah and have Taqwaa of the wombs (kinship) thus
you should not sever them. For verily keeping kinship is from the things in which Allah has
enjoined upon you to establish. Therefore, establishment of the ties of kinship is an
obligation and severing it is Haram (i.e. unlawful). Just as what the Book of Allah, the
Sunnah, and the consensus of the Religion of Islam (i.e. the Companions of Prophet)
have indicated to that.

Having Taqwaa of the hellfire

In addition, from what Allah has commanded (upon us) is that to have Taqwaa of the
Naar (i.e. the Hellfire). Allah says:
{ _ _ , _ \ _ z
"Then fear the Fire (Hell) whose fuel is men and stones, prepared for the
disbelievers."
[Al-Baqarah 2:24]

Al-Bayhaqee brings in his book "Branches of Emaan" a hadith on narrated on the authority
of Anas that he said, "the Messenger of Allah was reciting this verse:
{ _ \ z
"Fire (Hell) whose fuel is men and stones."

Having Taqwaa of the hellfire is by avoiding the actions in which make (him) enter it.
From the things that Allah has enjoined (upon us) to have Taqwaa of is the Last Day.
Allah says:

Having Taqwaa of the last day

It has been related that the later part of this verse was revealed to the Messenger of Allah;
and within it is the command to have Taqwaa of the Last Day. the Last Day in which the
will be gathered, from the first of them to the last of them, on one plateau in front of the
Lord of all that exists (i.e. Allah) to be given due recompense for their actionsthe good of
it as well as the bad deeds.
Having Taqwaa of this Day is by preparation for it by way of righteous deeds while
avoiding committing evil deeds; and by remembering it consistently in addition to
remembering what occurs in it, the Last Day, of horrors.
From the things that Allah has enjoined (upon us) is to have Taqwaa of Fitn and 'Uqubaat
[i.e. trials and punishments for crimes committed] in the Dunya' which descend upon those
who commit acts of disobedience and then spread out others who did not disapprove/reject
their actions (i.e. those who were disobedient).
Allah says:
{ _ . _ j \ _ . . z
"And fear the Fitnah (affliction and trial, etc.) which affects not in particular (only)
those of you who do wrong (but it may afflict all the good and the bad people),
and know that Allh is Severe in punishment."
[Al-An'fal 8:25]

Having Taqwaa of fitnah & punishment

Meaning, have fear (i.e. Taqwaa) of Fitnah [i.e. trial] that the Oppressor violates (the
limits) because the trials will strike the righteous as well as the wicked (will be stricken). Its
affliction is not specific to whoever is in direct contact with the oppressor from among,
rather exceed to other than the oppressor when (that person) does not reject him (i.e. his
acts of disobedience).
On the authority of Ibn 'Abbaas that he said regarding the (previous) verse:

.| .|

..

. _

.| |, .

.. :

,.-

..

, .|

,|.
"Allah has enjoined upon the believers not to agree the Munkar (i.e. acts of
disobedience etc.) among themselves for Allah will extend to all of them the
punishment."
As well many authentic narrations have been mentioned that this 'Ummah when it doesn't
command the Ma'roof and forbid the Mun'kar Allah will extend to (everyone) a
punishment. This the warning that will extend to all who knows of a Mun'kar but does not
reject it even if is distant, so what is the case for the one abandons (i.e. refusing & rejecting)
Mun'kar within his home and within his childrenhe witnesses them abandoning the
Prayer and he acknowledges them doing that.

Having Taqwaa of oppression & stinginess

From the things that the prophet has commanded (upon us) to have Taqwaa of is
oppression and stinginess.

On the authority of Jabir that the Messenger of Allah said:

which was made unlawful to each other).

4
Hadith of Jabir (found in Musnad Imam Ahmad, Adabul-Mufrad of Bukhari, & in Saheeh Muslim); Shaykh al-Albaani

The word | . :

O Muslims, it is obligatory placed upon the Muslim to avoid all forms of unlawful acts in
general and he should fear falling into it; however, the matters that have been mentioned
have been provided specifically due to the great danger of it. Therefore, have Taqwaa of
Allah O servants of Allahtowards what Allah and His messenger have enjoined upon
you by way fearing it. Moreover, obey Allah and His messenger in order that you may be
granted mercy.

supplication to Allah ." Shaykh al-Albaani - said the hadith is Hasan in his book Jamee' Saheeh Hadith
