Identification and modeling of Internal Waves PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATORs : Prof. AD Rao, IIT Delhi : Dr. TV Ramana Murty, NIO (RC) Visakhapatnam : Dr. KVSR Prasad, Andhra University, : : Dec 03 May 07

DATE OF COMMENCEMENT DATE OF COMPLETION

AIM/OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT: Identification and modeling of internal waves in the Bay of Bengal with an ultimate usage for Naval application

SCOPE OF THE PROJECT Identification of internal waves through in-situ observation (NIO) Identification of internal waves signature using satellite data Development of numerical model for the generation and propagation of internal waves ACHIEVEMENTS: Dominant observed frequencies of Iws found to be between 0.02-0.4 cph (LF) and 0.7-8.0 cph (HF) Very strong gradient observed in the sound velocity in the top & bottom layer during post-monsoon & late winter season Internal waves off Bay & Bengal during late winter appear to be generated by the bottom Numerous SAR images of different missions analyzed for sea surface signature of Iws in North Bay of Bengal since 1991 The POM Model has been implemented suitably for the last coast of India using an appropriate grid & bathymetry. Numerical modeling carried out for the coast of India, in corporating tidal forcing at the eastern open boundary Energy associated with the Iws is essentially in the LF range The maximum energy seems to be in the thermoling region Suggest that the energies associated with LF spectrum campass well with the observation

contd/-

LIKELY APPLICATION OF THE OUTCOME SUGGESTION FOR FUTURE WORK Study should cover more space & time to arrive at more judicious conclusions More in-situ time series observations are required using thermistor chain & CTD Experimental verification with the 2D wave spectra is to be carried out with normal calculated observation Inclusion of non-hydrostatic pressure in necessary for proper modeling the physics of Internal waves.
