kierkegaard has been called the father of existentialism write an essay explaining how Kierkegaard who is radical Christian, and Sartre who is radical atheist, can both be called existentialist? - According to Soren Kierkegaard the father of existentialism an individual man cannot be place as a cog in a machine or a part of a System. Truth is what is held on with the passion of the Intimate. With Kierkegaard, philosophy became the search for the meaning of life. In talking about the existentialists search for meaning one is immediately faced with two difficulties: existentialism is not so much a philosophical system as a movement, an attitude, frame of mind. Secondly, the question of what is the meaning of mans existence is for them more important than the answer for they do not agree on the answer. Inspite of the Divergency of thought, the existentialist thinkers in general can be divided into two camps, the theistic and the atheistic. We can site five common features of existentialist thinkers keeping in mind however, that each one has his own interpretation, his own unique way of handling the matter. 1. existentialist thinkers attempt to philosophize from the standpoint of an actor rather than from that of a expectation. This is due to the fact that the problem considered by existentialist thinkers arise out of their experience. The life of an existentialist thinkers can hardly be divorced from his philosophies. 2. Existentialist philosophies are basically philosophies of man stressing the subjectivity of man. The existentialist do not deny that man to a certain extent is an object, that he is a thing, given, conceptualizable, manipulable, controllable and determinable by others. The existentialist thinkers hold on to the subjectivity of man: man as the original center the sort of initiative, who has depth who transcends determination, the openness and giver of meaning to the world. Among theistic existentialist god is not an object but god-for-me, the god of my prayer the thou that I as a person can address to. 3. Existentialist stress on mans existence, on man as situated for soren Kierkegaard existence is a religious category: the situation of the single, finite, unique individual who has to make a decision before the one infinite god in fear and trembling like the situation of Abraham. 4. The existentialist thinkers emphasize the freedom of man. According to Kierkegaard freedom is that which enables man to pass from the aesthetic state to the ethical and ultimately, to make the leap of faith the highest act of mans liberty. 5. Existentialist philosophers propagate authentic existence versus inauthentic existence. Authentic existence is personal and the authentic man is one who freely commits himself to the realization of a

project, an idea, a truth, a Value. He is the one who does not hide himself in the anonymity of the crowd but signs himself to what he manifest. 2.choose an object, event, or experience on when you can perform a phenomenological reduction. First, write a description of the object, event, or experience from the perspective of everyday life. Then, after performing the epoch, write a report describing the same Object, event or experience from the perspective of the phenomenological reduction. -When I was in my 3rd year high school I happened to meet one of my classmates who seemed to be so smart and talkative especially in our classroom. Days gone by, and I wanted to know from what province or town she came from and what kind of family she belongs. I was so curious to know about her because she seemed to be a leader in our class as she was always the first one to raise her hand during questions from our class given by our head teacher. this went on or more than several weeks that I finally found out that she came from a middle income family and a 3rd class municipality. I envied her because with such a family background and coming from a 3rd class municipality she was able to bring out her actual character that she showed to us in our class. One day I approached her and wanted to be friend with her as I know and observed her that she wanted also to be close to me. Finally, I found her to be so friendly and I was amaze that she was not so arrogant as I have thought her to be before. My final words to my classmates is not to judge unjustly right away to anyone whom you have just met until you can really analyze her internal character or anyone for that matter. 3.
