ABSTRACT

This study was carry out to investigate the important of Internet usage among undergraduates and how the Internet being used by undergraduates. A total of 50 students, 40 men and 10 women were randomly selected to be the respondents of the study. A set of questionnaire was designed to gain primary data from respondents about the Internet usage among them. Then five students were selected from the total respondents to do an interview session. The findings from interview will support the findings that we get from the questionnaire. The overall findings of the study indicates that most of the students know how to use Internet, they use Internet mainly for entertainment purpose such as playing mini online games, downloading music and others. Besides that, they used Internet for educational purpose such as finding information for their assignment works, interact with the lectures and others. Usually, they used Internet at hostel in their room because they used the Internet when they have a free time. In conclusion, some suggestions have been made to improvise the facilities in Kolej 11 and to overcome the disadvantages of the Internet and recommendations for future research have also been included in the final part of the report.

CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the study Currently, many facilities have emerged due to the development of science and technology. All these facilities have made life moving forward. The needs and requirements can be obtained easily in a short period. At the same time, people also do not need more trouble to obtain information or seek an item that is needed. How all of this can happen? All of this happens because of improvement of information technology. There has created the internet. The Internet is created to facilitate people to acquire information and knowledge more easily and quickly. This method can be implemented with the development of virtual technology. Information or knowledge can be obtained even if a student outside the classroom or in mode of lecture. Virtual technology is also capable of connecting people in different places while at the same time. It can be implemented with the use of the Internet. In addition, Internet also works convey information in a faster and shorter than the communication devices such as mail or telephone? However, the widespread use of Internet is also having some disadvantages. For example the rumour from local newspaper (KEADILAN) post that FELDA bankrupt. If the rumour spread occurs, it can indirectly affect a country's economy. In addition, dissemination of obscene pictures or pornographic can also bring negative effects to the country. (Example: increase rates of crime) As matter of fact, these matters will have a negative influence on users, including students who are still studying. The students are mostly comprised of teenagers who are still raw and have mental and emotional weakness. However, there is not enough evidence at this point to conclude that the internet is give more disadvantage than advantage to the students. So in order to know what fact is and

what is not we decide to choose this topic. Besides that, we can also gain some insight on how internet improve our studies and use for entertainment. In other case, On Wednesday 21 July 2010, our local newspaper KOSMO post a very disturbing headline regarding internet where internet is been misused by teenager. As a teenager and under graduate, these headlines intrigued us on what do under graduate as me use for. Is it for learning, leisure or maybe for side income? When we talked about under graduates, most of the people must line that we use Internet for studies mainly but from my experience, some of us devoted ourselves to Internet as way to express ourselves and relax our mind from hustle and bustle of student life. Others also looked at Internet as gateway to get extra income. In order to know what fact is and what is not we decide to choose this topic. Besides that, we can also gain some insight on how Internet improve our studies and use for leisure.

1.2

Statement of problem Malaysia has experience an increased growth in the number of Internet user

since the Internet became available. According to Internet uses static (ITU) shows that there are 16 902 600 internet users as of June, 2009, and it is equal to 64.6% of the population in Malaysia. As a matter of fact, Internet became a necessity to teenager especially student like us. Internet has more functional for student. It depends on how they use it. For example, nowadays many institution of modern society are dramatically replacing the traditional methods of teaching and learning with web pages for courses provide courses notes as supplements to course that are delivered in traditional classroom. Like Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) use elearning as a media to connect between lecture and student especially the student that study out of campus. It makes them easily to get notes, information and etc. The usefulness and convenience of this technology has made more and more Malaysians became heavily dependent on its functions without knowing or realising the possible effect that could bring to student mind and the way of their life. Given the situation, it is high time that our local government take serious effort in studying the possible effect that may rise from this useful technology. So that, this issue must

be monitor by the governed party to ensure that student does not misuse the opportunity that present to them. Based on our experiences as a students and teenagers, we found out that there are many problems involving the Internet and students. Is a known facts that the Internet had an abundance of information and benefit if we know where to looks but for some of us, they only assumed that the Internet as a leisure and social media. This really reduces the used of the internet into entertainments media rather that wider perfective and potential to be the stepping stone in improving students lifestyle. Students do not take advantage of the websites that provide abundance of information and knowledge. For example, http://portal.psz.utm.my, website for UTM library frequently misjudge it significant for simply to find books in the library using but this are not necessarily true because beside providing search engine to find books, http://portal.psz.utm.my also provide warehouse of article and thesis from previous students. Since Internet has become part of undergraduates life especially in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, it is academically worth to investigate students internet usage and their inclination towards it. This investigation would allow the researcher to explore more about Universiti Teknologi Malaysia undergraduate student especially undergraduate student at Kolej 11 where to know the purpose of they use the Internet.

1.3

Purpose of the study Internet had been one of the most important media for peoples to gain

information. Year by year, the increasing numbers of Internet user indicate that the Internet had become a necessity in daily life. Nowadays Internet had become the source of information, gains knowledge, finding new friends, for leisure, shared opinions and much more. This wave modernization also becomes a phenomenon among teenager especially students. In a ways, Internet has become students best friend in their studies. So, due to this fact, the research that we conduct will be aiming to know further about this issue. The purpose of the study is to investigate the

important of internet usage among undergraduates and how the Internet being used by undergraduates.

1.4

Objective of Study

The objectives of this study are:


1. To examine the purpose of the Internet usage among students. 2. To investigate the duration of the Internet users. 3. To investigate the places of the Internet users.

4. To evaluate the common type of website they use when surfing.

Research question The question for the questionnaire is depends on the requirement of

objectives.

1.5

Significant of the study In 2009, Malaysia had become the 26th country with the highest Internet user

and almost 90% users were among college students. From this statistic it shown that our young mind has start to expand their mind and does not rely only on books for information or leisure. But this habit also pro and con where without proper guidance and monitoring, they might misused it such as surfing on pornographic website or learn useless and harmful information such how to make drugs. We hope from this research we can contribute to better knowledge of how to use Internet and it massive information. These finding also benefit the university because with this information, the governed parties can develop interactive website that can help student in their studies and at the same time become a place for student to get entertainments. These researches also might improve existed website like elearning.utm.my to be more attractive to undergraduates.

1.6

Scope of study This study carried out among the male student in Kolej 11(K11), UTM where

the resident of Kolej 11 consist of undergraduate and postgraduate students. We took about 50 respondents to answer our questionnaires and our focus involves a second and third year undergraduate students and how they used the Internet. We distributed the questionnaires by going room by room of respondents which involves Ma4, Ma5, Ma6 and Ma7 for male student and Ma1 for female students. These subjects will be chosen randomly and we be interviewing few of them to gain some insight on how they used the internet and what the pros and cons from internet that they come across when using the Internet.

2.1

Definition of Internet From Wikipedia (http;//www.wikipedia.org/internet), Internet is define as a

global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standard Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP) to serve billions of users worldwide. It is a network of networks that consists of millions of private, public, academic, business, and government networks of local to global scope that are linked by a broad array of electronic and optical networking technologies. The Internet carries a vast array of information resources and services, most notably the inter-linked hypertext documents of the World Wide Web (WWW) and the infrastructure to support electronic mail. It has become a fact that the growth of Internet users has become phenomena where abundance of information can be access with a click of button. Internet also becomes a hub for communication to people all over the globe. The one of richest man in the world, Bill Gate once said, The Internet is becoming the town square for the global village of tomorrow. From his quotation, Bill Gate recognise internet as an important instruments to connect people globally in the future. From the side of our research, the relationship between internet and student is related to each other where it has become necessity in their life.

2.2

History of Internet Nowadays the applications of the Internet are very useful to us. For examples

chatting, checking emails, online games, e-banking and e-learning. So that it has become a fact that the growth of internet users has become phenomena where all of information can be access just one click of button. All that we have is based from 53 years ago. Before 1957, computer only work for one task at one time, this is called batch processing. When computer getting bigger and bigger they have to store the

computer in special cooled drum but then the developer cannot work directly to the computer. Someone built connection to connect them. Programming at that time has a lot of the manual work and it made much of wasting time. The year 1957, another idea was created. A remote connect system had to be installed to the main computer, certain developer can work directly to the computer from out site and at the same time the idea of time-sharing was came up. This is the first concept in computer technology to share the processing parallel to the one computer with multiple users. On the fourth October 1957 during the cold war the first unman satellite was sent orbit by the Soviet Union, in order to secure American leading technology the U.S found the Defence Advance Research Project Agency (DARPA) in February 1958. At that time knowledge was only transferred by people, the DARPA plan the large scale computer network in order to produce the knowledges transfer and avoid the doubling up over ready existing research, this network would become the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET). Feather more, three other concepts would to be developing which are fundamental for the history of the internet. First is the concept to the military network by RAND Corporation (Paul Baran) in America, the commercial network of the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) IN England, and the scientific connection Institut de Recherche dInformatique et dAutomatique (CYCLADES) in France, all that concept are the foundation of modern Internet that we use nowadays. ARPANET its development beginning in 1966, small computer was put in front of the mainframe this computer was called Interface Message Processer (IMP). The IMP took over control of the network activity while the mainframe was only in charge of the analysis of the program and data file, at the same time the IMP also serve the interface for the mainframe. Since only the IMP were inter connected in the network this is also called IMP Subnet. For the first connection between the computer, the Network Working Group develop the Network Control Protocol (NCP), later on the NCP was replace by the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) the specific feature of the TCP is the verification of the file transfer.

Since the NPL network was design for the commercial bases, a lot of user and file transfer were expected, in order to avoid conjunctional of the line the sent file were divided into smaller packet and put together again at the receiver and that is the Packet-switching. In 1962, communication still use to work through the radio wave that would cause problem in case over the atomic attack and the long way wave will be disturb and it not work anymore. Therefore, they had to use direct way and the weakness for this method have a not long range, a best solution is to build a distributed of the network. This network long distance could be covered with the minimum interference. Another network development is CYCLADES, since the CYCLADES had a fast network then ARPANET and also have few nodes the focus was lead on the communication with other network. So from that, the term of the inter-net was born.

2.3

Classification of Internet usage Internet had become a phenomenon and necessity in our daily life. For this

study, it can be classified into two major things where it involved the Internet and the user of the Internet. The Internet consists of many major components but for our research study, we going to classify the internet into three major components which is education, leisure and source of income. Besides that, the Internet benefits cover a large area including economic sector, communication and social. Internet also become sanctuary for people and not

limited to age, race or religions and it can be related to this study because most of the people use the Internet especially student to do assignment.

2.4

Research in study

Salim ( October 2005) conducted a similar research regarding the usage of internet among undergraduates. This research of the internet usage was focused more toward the internet usage as a learning tool among undergraduates in College of Education Salalah Oman. This research was performed among 373 students from the College of College Education Salalah Oman that consist of 217 male students and 156 female students. Resulted from the research made by Salim (October 2005) that the internet factors which the affection and perception toward the internet really produce a major different among students performance in academic terms. It is suggested that students that used internet as one of their learning media had excel more in their academic than their counterpart that mostly dependable on books as their major source of academic knowledge and information. The research sudy made by Salim (October 2005) had many relation and similarity to our research studies because both of our research were aiming at the undergraduate students where we try to determine how the internet had been governed their lifestyle and the ways undergraduates used the internet. In our research study, we also were being focusing on how the internet factors help students academically. While Salim (October 2005) only aiming at the internet usage in academic terms, our research has wider scope where we try focus more toward students lifestyle. Erdal (July 2007) also conducted a study on the profile of the use of the Internet for study purpose among students University Faculty of Education Sivas, Turkey. The study was to identify the conditions of the students in term of their Internet usage at the universities and thus, generate suggestions which will help students in general and other parties and authorities concerned take measures so as to improve the student-Internet relationship. This study also had similarity to our research study but Erdal( July 2007) had set to know the profile of the use of the Internet for study purpose where for our study, we try to determine what interested student toward Internet and use the result to suggest improvement to the current educational website

created by UTM. In research made by Erdal(2July 2007), the result shows that student to go outside campus and cyber cafe to gain Internet access as for our students, the facility provided by UTM is sufficient and it is only up to students on how to use it.

CHAPTER 3 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY 3.1 Introduction This chapter discusses the methodology of the research. The aiming of this research is to investigate the important of Internet usage among undergraduates and how the Internet being used by undergraduates. It has three objectives where for the first objective mainly to examine the purpose of the Internet usage among students.

The second objective is to investigate the duration and places of the Internet users where we want more specific data from the students. The third and last objective is to explore the common type of website they use when surfing either it is for education or leisure and maybe for side income. This research conducted on students that were lived in college eleven. The data for the research were collected through questionnaire as a main part followed by interview and observation.

3.2

Research Instrument This research consumed both the quantitative and qualitative research

methodology. The instruments used to collect data were questionnaire and interview. A set of questionnaire containing around 19 questions divided into 2 sections where it was based on discussion in the group of researcher. Different question-types, such as yes-no, listing, open-ended and category were used in this questionnaire. The different sections of the questionnaire were classified into: i) demographic information, ii) purpose of internet usage, places and duration of internet usage, types of website that students commonly used when using internet. For the qualitative data, it is come from the interview where it is use for the purpose to support the questionnaire. The interview will be in informal where questions will be asked to the interviewee.

3.2.1

Questionnaire Questionnaires is containing around 19 question such as yes-no question,

listing and open-ended question. The entire question is based on our objective that we stated at chapter 1. The example of questionnaire has been place in appendix.

3.2.2

Interview

The interviewers are taken by randomly go to their room among male students. The questions are same as the questionnaire. We decide to do interview because we want to get more specific answers for our study.

3.3

Respondents of the Study The respondent of the study were second and third year undergraduates from

Kolej 11, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. It is focus on forty male and ten female respondents. The respondent is taken randomly. In other hand, from the total respondents, there are fives respondents were took out to be the interviewees.

3.4

Research Procedure The questionnaires were distributed at various block of college eleven, such

as block MA1, MA4, MA5, MA6 and MA7. Respondents were asked with an initial question of whether they have a computer or not, before the questionnaire were given to them. Forty of questionnaires were distributed to male student from room to room and the others ten questionnaires were distributed to female student at Arkid Angkasa.

3.5

Data Analysis To analyse the data, a few variable were taken into consideration namely the

study purpose, place and duration. Data were calculating using manual where the result is show through frequency counts and other descriptive statistics. The answer that we get from interview is used to support the questionnaire. Microsoft Excel is used as software to show the data that we get from questionnaire where it will be represent in form of pie chart, bar graph, table and others.

CHAPTER 4 FINDINGS AND DICUSSION 4.0 Introduction In this chapter, for the beginning it contains discussion on findings where it started with analyzing on choice questions. Then follow by rank questions, open ended questions and interview.

4.1

Finding of questionnaires The questions in the questionnaire have been develop based on those

objectives. From the findings, we can conclude that most of the students at Kolej 11 used Internet for entertainment purpose such as playing games online, downloading music or videos and others. Most of them used the Internet almost everyday and they usually used at hostel in their room. The common websites they surf when using Internet such as Facebook, Friendster, Myspace and others.

4.2

Background of questionnaires This questionnaire contains 19 questions where it has rank questions and

open ended questions. The answer from questionnaire will be support by data from interview session. There are 50 respondents, 40 male and 10 women, randomly select at Kolej 11 to answer the questionnaires.

4.3

Using of Internet Students were been asked on either they have been used the Internet or not.

Discussions were described in the Figure 4.1 where it based on the percentage of the respondents answer.

Figure 4.1: Have you ever used the Internet? Figure 4.1 shows the answer for the question that has been asked to them on have they ever used the Internet. All of the respondents answer that they have ever used the Internet where from the graph it can be illustrated that 100 percent of male and female respondents answer Yes and zero percent of respondents answer No for that particularly question. Most of respondents are students and they answer Yes because in their students life the Internet is important to them so they must know how to use it.

4.4

Knowledge of gaining information through Internet Students were been asked either they have a general knowledge on how to

find information on Internet or not. Students will choose the answer between yes and no.

Figure 4.2 shows the answer for the second question in questionnaire on did they know how to find information through Internet. Most of the respondents said yes where 97.5 percent of male and female respondents said Yes and only 2.5 percent of respondents said No. From the total number of the students 49 students answer yes while one student answer no. Only one student answers no maybe because he did not have a computer.

4.5

Frequency on Internet usage in a week Students were been asked either on how frequent they used Internet in a

week. Students need to choose between five answer either everyday, 2-3 times a week, once a week and if necessary. The data were depends on the percentage of respondents answer.

Figure 4.3: How often do you use the Internet in a week? Figure 4.3 shows the answer for the third question on how often they use Internet in a week. Internet is important for them to help they do their work such as assignment, tutorial and others. A total of 82 percent of male and female students stated that they used internet everyday means in number, 41 of them used Internet everyday. Then eight percent of them said that they used the Internet two to three times a week where it is equal to 8 students in number. For the third choice out of four, two percent of the students means only one students said that they used Internet once a week. The remains 8 percent of the students said that they only used Internet if necessary.

4.6

Internet usage time Students were been asked on when they usually use the Internet. It has three

answer either in morning, evening and night where students need to choose between the answers. The data were depends on the percentage of respondents answer.

Figure 4.4: When do you usually use the Internet? Figure 4.4 shows the percentage of time when our respondent usually uses the Internet. The time for respondent to use Internet had been classified into Morning, starting from eight in the morning to twelve in the afternoon, Evening, from 12 in the afternoon to eight in the evening and night, from eight in the evening to eight in the morning. From the Figure 4.4 above, we can clearly see that there are major differences in when the respondent use the Internet. Night time Internet users will give a result a sum up on total of 70 percent of the respondents. This result shows that most resident of Kolej 11 prefer to use the Internet in night time. From our interview, we found out that most of Kolej 11 resident prefer to surf Internet at night because during the day, they busy attending classes and night time is the only time they can surf the Internet. The other time that respondent use internet is in the evening and in the morning. Morning is the time for the lowest Internet user where only 10 percent of respondent prefer to surf in the morning. They prefer to surf in the morning because they prefer to read online news paper in the morning before their classes start. For this percentage of respondent, they are busy in the evening and night because they need to complete their assignment and study. After that is evening. 20 percent of the respondent prefers to use the Internet in the evening because it is the time when their classes had ended. For this type of respondent, they had no time to surf internet in the

morning and night due to assignment. Some of the respondent also mentions that during evening, the internet speed are faster because less people using the line.

4.7

The common place that students use Internet. Students were been asked on the common place that students use the Internet.

It has four answer, students need to choose between four answers either they used Internet at hostel, cafe, study room or CICT. Then they need to answer the level of frequency of the place that they are commonly use Internet. The data were depends on higher percentage of the frequency of each answers.

Table 4.1: Where is the common place students use Internet? Table 4.1 shows the level frequency of Internet usage depends on places that are commonly used by students to use Internet. From the Table 4.1, we know that students are mostly used the Internet at hostel means in their own room where 88 percent of them said that they use very often at hostel. Most of them use Internet in their room because it is easy for them and there are Internet resources such as LAN cable and WIFI. Then the second higher percentage of agreement is at study room, 44 percent of them said that they use moderately at study room. It is because they only used it when there are discussion in group where it is easy for them. It is followed by CICT and cafe, 42 percent and 36 percent of them said that they used less frequently at that place. It is because CICT is far from Kolej 11 and it is not easy to go there while at cafe they are most prefer eating than used internet.

There are three types of purpose they use the Internet which are education, entertainment and others. From the analysis of the data in Figure 4.5, it can conclude that entertainment is the main purpose of undergraduate use the Internet which is 28 persons. It followed by education which is 17 persons. The less reason they use Internet is others which are 5 persons. The others are referring to seek information and checking email. So from this result we can conclude that the undergraduate use the Internet to release their tension.

It has seven answers where students need to choose several answers between it where either they used it for email, finding information, entertainment, finding general information, educational courses, downloading music or discussion boards.

From the data analysis in Figure 4.6, it showed that finding information about work and entertainment is the major reason they use the internet which is 45 persons. It followed by checking email 37 persons, downloading music 31 persons, finding general information 27 persons, educational course 26 person and the less reason is discussion boards. So from the result we can conclude that the undergraduate use Internet to do their assignment and for leisure.

4.10

Internet as a media to interact with other people

Students were been asked on either students used the Internet as a media to interact with other people or not. It has two answers either yes or no where students need to choose between it. The data were based on the percentage of the respondents answer.

It showed that ninety-six percent of the undergraduates use the internet as a medium to interact with others people. So from the result we can conclude that most of the undergraduate use the internet to interact with others people like family, friend and lectures.

The people are lecturers, friends and other. Most of the respondents choose that they used Internet to communicate with family. From the Figure 4.8 we know that 82 percent of the respondent mostly used Internet to interact with their friends. They used the Internet as a media to communicate with their friends because in a hectic life of a student, they are too busy to meet their friend that live in other college or other university. Due to the fact that the Internet in UTM is free for UTM student, they prefer to use internet to interact with their friends rather than using a telephone. Beside friends, 6 percent respondent answer lecturer as the people they interacted with using Internet. The respondent use Internet to interact with lecturer because some of lecturer does not allowed their student to contact them at home and the only alternative for students to contact their lecturer are using Internet mainly using www.elearning.utm.my. The rest of respondents which sum up a total of 12 percent of the respondents said that they used the Internet to interact with their family member. The reason is the same as why they prefer to use internet rather than telephone which is using Internet is free.

Types of website which most attracted

Students were been asked on the types of website which most attracted by students when they surfed Internet . It has three answer where respondents need to answer either they are more attracted to seek information, used as entertainment or interaction with other people. The data were based on the percentage of respondents answer.

Almost 56 percent of respondents choose the entertainment website as their main feature when they surf the Internet such as for video clips, downloading the movies and mini games. It follows by the information website such as articles or news and website for interaction with others people such as forums or instant message which about 44 percent for each of them. From this result, we can say that most of the students prefer to surf the entertainment website while they use the Internet compare to other website and this might be because of the varieties of feature they can get from this website.

4.13

Types of language used in Internet communication

For the eleventh question, students were been asked on the types of language they used while used Internet. It has three answer either they used malay, english or mandarin and they need to choose between it. The data were based on the percentage of respondents answer.

From the analysis, it shows that majority of the respondents prefer to use English as their language when they surfed the Internet which about 74 percent, either to interact with others people or to search for the information. It follows by the Malay languages which about 34 percent and a little number of respondents use Mandarin language which is two per cent when they used the Internet. The increasing number of English usage among the students while they surf the Internet shows the attitude of them to being master in this important language today.

Types of websites that students commonly used

For the twelveth question, students were been asked on the types of websites that students commonly used while used Internet. It has five answer either they choose facebook, friendster, E-learning, myspace or online newspaper. Discussions were described in the form table where it based on the percentage of respondents answer.

From the Table 4.2, most of the students used facebook as types if websites that they commonly used where 37 of them agreed that they used facebook very often. It is because, nowadays facebook is famous among teenager as a media for them to connect each others. Then 35 percent and 32 percent of them said that they used less frequently on friendster and myspace. It is because they mostly used facebook and they more prefer it than that two websites. Lastly, it is followed by 21 and 15 percent of them said they used e-learning and online newspaper frequently. They used it frequently to get more general knowledge and for e-learning they used it as media to connect with lecturer, find some notes and others.

4.15

Internet help students to get side income

Students were been asked on either the Internet help students to get side income or not. Students need to choose either they said yes or no. The data were based on the percentage of respondents answer.

From the figure above, we can conclude that most of undergraduate does not use internet to earn side income. Only 2 percent of the respondent state that they use Internet to gain earning while 92 percent of respondent state that they do not associate Internet with side income.

The bad effects of Internet to students Students were been asked on either Internet bring bad influnce to students or

not. Students need to choose either they agreed to said yes or no. The data were based on the percentage of respondents answer

necessity to students. It has five answer to choose either they strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree, strongly disagree. The data were based on the percentage of respondents answer.

The answer is divided into five answers which are strongly agreed, agree, neutral, disagree and strongly disagree. Approximately 66 percent of the respondent give response and said that there are strongly agree to this statement while 30 percent of the respondents only agree with statement. The rest of respondent that consist of 4 percent of the total respondent remain neutral to the statement.

4.19

Open ended question For this type of question students have been asked to gives their opinion on

how important E-learning and how to make it more attractive and user friendly. It was found that most of the respondents said that the e-learning good and useful to them. Like example, respondent one said that E-learning is a good website and most of the respondents agreed with the statement, while respondent two gives his opinion stated that E-learning is a good place for students and lecturer to interact each other. Other opinions for this question can be referring in appendix. On the other hand, some of the students give the suggestions on how to make the website more attractive and user friendly. Like example respondent one said that UTM need to make the website more interesting where some of them agreed about that. Some of them suggest to makes campaign or conduct quizzes that give great prizes, make the website more colourful, and the other suggestions can be referred at appendix. Besides that, they are also gives the other comment about the e-learning website. Like examples one of them think that UTM current website is not good enough and some of them said that it is lack of information while the other comments can be referred in appendix.

4.20 Analysis of Interview From interview, we gain more detailed information on the question in the questionnaires. We selected five respondent and interviewed them base on the question from questionnaires. Completed analysis of interview can be referring at appendix. These are few sample of answer given during our interview: 1) Do you know how to find information through Internet? Respondent 1: Yes. Usually when aaa..I want to find some information I use Google to start my searching. Respondent 3: i used google search to find information 2) What is the main purpose for you to use the Internet?

Respondent 1 : Mostly for entertainment. I like to chat in fb..ermm..facebook aa.... yahoo messenger and email. I use Internet to communicate with friends from time to time. Respondent 5: Actually, I use the Internet for education such as to search general information for assignment. Besides, I use it to read my friend blog, discussion with other people and to solve my problem. 3) What kind of feature in website that you attracted to? Respondent 2: I like website with a lot of information like article. I like to read at blog. Respondent 5 : When I use the Internet, I most attract to surf for information and entertainment website. 4) Do you think Internet bring bad influence to you? Respondent 1: Yes. This thing is subjective. Its depend on the person to divide their time equally and how to use it. Respondent 4: No because if we use for good so we can get benefit. CHAPTER 5 CONCLUSION
5.1

Introduction This chapter discuss on the overall conclusion of this research. In this

chapter, it is contain the overview of the study, restating the objectives, review of the findings, implications of the findings and limitations of the study.

5.2

Overview of the study This study investigated the Internet usage among undergraduates in Kolej 11,

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). The data were collected by randomly distributing questionnaire to 50 students where for the feedback, we got the answered questionnaire from 40 male students and 10 female students. Then we selected 10 students from the 50 respondents to do an interview section where the results were used to support the result from questionnaire.

5.3

The objectives of study As mentioned in the earlier chapter, this study was based on four main

objectives. The first objectives were to examine the purpose of the Internet usage among students. The second objectives were to investigate the duration of the Internet usage and the next objectives were to investigate the place of the Internet usage. Lastly, we also set out to evaluate the common type of websites they prefer.

5.3.1

Reasons for undergraduates to use the Internet.

From our study, we had found out that most our subjects used Internet for entertainments and to find information on their works. This result show that Internet not only serves as a media for leisure and entertainment but also as a tool for learning and educations. They also prefer to use Internet rather than reading books. Besides that, we also found out that no participants of our study use Internet as source of side incomes. This indicates that our undergraduates prefer to use Internet for entertainments and to gain information only.

5.3.2 The time undergraduates prefer to use the Internet.

In our second objective, we try to determine the time preferred by students to surf Internet and the result was as we predicted. We predict that students prefer to surf Internet during night time and the result shows that our prediction is correct. Most of the students prefer to use Internet in the night because during the day, they need to attend lectures that usually end in the evening so the only time that they can surf Internet was during night time. Our study also indicated that most of the students surf Internet everyday. This proved that Internet had become more favourable than books.

5.3.3 Places for students to surf Internet.

To reiterate, the study also set out to investigate places student prefer to surf Internet. Due to good facility provided by Kolej 11, almost all of our participants prefer to use Internet in their own room. LAN service provided in their room allowed them to used Internet all days without the need to go to other places. Few of our participants go to CICT because Internet service to slow or not working.

5.3.4 Favourable website among students.

The last objective is to evaluate the common type of websites they used when surfing the Internet. Our participants mainly visited entertainment page and informative page had the second highest page visited. Besides that, our study statistic also shows that Facebook was the most visited website than other website such as Elearning. The results indicated that student like and prefer features offered in social website such as Facebook and other entertainments. Also in the interview, some correspondent answer that they like to have and interactive academic website where they can chat and share ideas. They also mentioned that they want academic website to shows videos on the related subject such as how to construct roads.

5.4

Review of the findings

The following conclusions can be drawn from the study. To begin with, this study has shown that most of the students know to used Internet and most of them also stated that they use the Internet for entertainment such as for social purpose where they like to communicate with their friend using Internet. Result of the study also show that used the Internet for academic study where they can look for informative material for their assignments and get some general knowledge also from Internet and other benefit. With regards to language, they mostly prefer used English. It is easy for them to communicate with other people around the globes because English is the common language used around the world. Then most of the students used Internet at night time because at day they are usually go to class. Majority of them used it everyday where it is used to get some knowledge to help them in their study. They also prefer used Internet in their room because it is comfortable for them and got enough facilities. Lastly, the common websites that they used are social websites such as Facebook, Myspace and Friendster. They used it as a fun where they can connect with other people through that media.

5.5

Implications of the findings The results of this study indicate that education and leisure is the two main

purposes why students used Internet. For them the Internet is important.

5.6

Limitations of the study However, these findings are only true for Kolej 11, UTM students and cannot

be generalized to other college students in UTM or other university students. The same study needs to be conducted by them to see if there are any similarities with the main purpose of the Internet usage.

CHAPTER 6 RECOMMENDATION 6.1 Introduction This chapter discuss on recommendation about our research. In this chapter, it is contain the recommendations based on findings and recommendation for future research.

6.2

Recommendations based on findings Based on the findings and conclusions of our study, here are a few

recommendations to be considered for Internet usage among undergraduates: 1. College administrator of Kolej 11 must increase the ability of Internet services and connection to all of the college blocks to make sure all residents of Kolej 11 can easily access for the Internet to do their work. 2. Internet services administrator in UTM must always filtered the content of materials in the Internet which is accessed by the students to ensure they only surf the knowledge materials which important for their academic study and for the entertainment, the Internet just a function to release tension in their study.

3. All of the undergraduates should able use the Internet provide to them for the good reason only by used it to interact with their lecturers or friends to get more information and knowledge about their study, rather than use it for the disadvantage matters. 4. UTM current website, www,elearning.com.my must upgrade their services to make sure all of students can get any sources of information or software which they needed for their study and this website also can be a junction for students to interact with their lectures or other students to share and gain more knowledge. 5. All of the undergraduates should able to balance their routine of using the Internet to make sure they can concentrate for their study and the most important, it not give a bad influence for their academic result.

6.3

Recommendation for future research Since this study had only focused on residents of Kolej 11, it is recommended

that further studies be carried out on students from other colleges in UTM for the big scale research. It is important to see whether there are any similarities in the findings and get the clear viewed of Internet usage among undergraduates today. Furthermore, further research could also determine what the main purpose for students use the Internet, either for the education, entertainment and others. Besides, it also can give a reference for Internet services administrator in UTM to know the level of students satisfying due to Internet services provide by them to all of colleges in UTM. Lastly, this further study also can analyse the effects and influences of Internet usage to students academics performance, either it give bad effects for their academic results or otherwise.
