A LITTLE HELP: Mothers-to-be and their doctors can take measures now to reduce the risk of having a premature baby. (NAPSI Photo)
of an early delivery that may have tragic consequences, said Jason K. Baxter, M.D., MSCP, FACOG, a high-risk pregnancy physician and an author of groundbreaking research on progesterone and prematurity prevention. Treatment with vaginal progesterone gel started midpregnancy for women with a short cervix helps reduce premature birth so that more moms can have healthy babies. Experts say that cervical length measurements are critical for all pregnant women. There are two ways to measure cervical length reliably: transvaginal ultrasound and a new device called CerviLenz. Transvaginal ultrasound uses a probe that is inserted into the vagina to create a digital image of the cervix. This procedure usually requires an extra prenatal appointment as there is a need for hightech equipment and specially trained examiners. CerviLenz is a disposable device used with a speculum. With CerviLenz, its easy for obstetricians and midwives to measure cervical length during regular prenatal visits. Expectant mothers should speak with their health care providers about having their cervical length measured at least twice during the second trimester of their pregnancy to find out if they are at high risk of premature birth and need treatment. Visit www.measure2besure.com for more information.

HELP: Being different from someone isnt a bad thing. There are lots of things we can learn from others that may enlighten our own lives. (Courtesy Photo/Monkey Business-Fotolia.com)
(StatePoint) The world is changing and parents need to make sure their children are prepared to succeed in an increasingly globalized economy, say experts. The United States is often regarded as a melting pot, a place for people of different backgrounds to come together and ultimately grow alike. But the truth is that from language to food to religious practice, unique cultural traditions are all around us. We must not try to erase differences but rather respect them, even celebrate them, says Rajiv Malhotra, author of the new book, Being Different: An Indian Challenge to Western Universalism (HarperCollins Publishers). Malhotra believes we can look to India as an example of a distinct society that peacefully integrates many diverse people. Alongside reading, writing and arithmetic, cultural diversity should be at the forefront of your childrens lesson plan. But dont just encourage tolerance. Go a step further. Tolerance is a patronizing posture, says Malhotra, We need to learn to respect, even appreciate and not

recommended products. n Sand to improve traction. n Snow shovels and other snow removal equipment. n Sufficient heating fuel. You may become isolated in your home and regular fuel sources may be cut off. If you have a fireplace or wood-burning stove, be sure to store a good supply of dry, seasoned wood. If your heat goes out, never use a generator or other gasoline, propane, natural gas or charcoal-burning devices inside a home. n Adequate clothing and blankets to keep you warm. Additionally, these tips will help you and your family get through the winter: n Make a family communications plan. Your family may not be together when disaster strikes, so it is important to know how you will contact one another, how you will get back together and what you will do in case of an emergency. n Listen to a NOAA Weather Radio or other local news channels for critical information from the National Weather Service (NWS) and public safety officials. Be alert to changing weather conditions. n Minimize travel. If travel is necessary, keep an emergency supply kit in your vehicle. n Bring pets/companion animals inside during winter weather. Move other animals or livestock to sheltered areas. Finally, everyone should get familiar with the terms that are used to identify a winter storm hazard and discuss with your
family what to do if a winter storm watch or warning is issued. Terms used to describe a winter storm hazard include the following: n Freezing Rain creates a coating of ice on roads and walkways. n Sleet is rain that turns to ice pellets before reaching the ground. Sleet also causes roads to freeze and become slippery. n Winter Weather Advisory means cold, ice and snow are expected. n Winter Storm Watch
means severe weather such as heavy snow or ice is possible in the next day or two. n Winter Storm Warning means severe winter conditions have begun or will begin very soon. FEMAs mission is to support our citizens and first responders to ensure that as a nation we work together to build, sustain, and improve our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all hazards.

Over the last few months, we have continued to see the support of our community and the desire to see our students be successful. In support of this, we will be providing updates (via the TC School News, our TC website, and/or the River Valley Shopper) regarding district and state initiatives that may affect you or your child. The update below reects how the changes in MEAP and MME cut scores enacted by the State of Michigan will affect our district, schools, and students. The State of Michigan uses all third through ninth grade student MEAP and MME test results to partially measure the success of our students, schools, and district, as well as how the State of Michigan is performing compared to other states. In recent years, Michigan students have shown higher prociency rates on state tests than most other states. Research has uncovered that Michigan set the prociency bar much lower than most other states, and far below what is considered college readiness. Recognizing this, the State has made drastic changes to the cut score levels and these changes will affect student, school, and district scores this year. What does this mean for Tri County? The new cut scores are going to show a very large drop in the number of students considered procient or advanced. You can see from the graph provided how the new cut scores will change the percent procient dramatically, and in some cases, going from 96 percent procient to 37 percent. Please be aware of these changes as you receive your students scores this spring. We are committed to helping every child achieve their best future, helping all children grow academically each year, and making Tri County a leader in educational excellence. In order to reach this goal, we are reviewing and building our curriculum to meet these new and challenging demands of college and career readiness. Thank you again for your support and dedication to Tri County Schools. Allen Cumings, Superintendent For more information about the changes to Michigans cut scores, please visit: http://www.michigan.gov/documents/mde/New_Cut_Scores_FAQ_365040_7.pdf
Drew Thompson is student teaching at Sand Lake Elementary in the fth grade. He will graduate from Ferris State University this month. Hes teaching math, language arts, and social studies. He has worked at a number of schools including; Oakridge Elementary, Stanwood Elementary, and Eastwood Elementary. The biggest aspect of why I wanted to be an educator was to reach all students at their different levels. I also have quite a few family members that are teachers, which has drawn me to the eld of education, said Drew, who also enjoys coaching sports and being outdoors.

First graders at MacNaughton Elementary have been learning about Pilgrims, Native Americans, and how the tradition of Thanksgiving began long ago. On Tuesday, November 22, 175 rst grade students joined together as Pilgrims and Indians to enjoy a Thanksgiving Breakfeast. Some students wore Pilgrim hats and bonnets while others donned Indian headbands and vests, which students had constructed prior to the event. The children had a wonderful time visiting with friends and feasting together. After eating, the students sang a few fun turkey songs together, which they had been rehearsing in their classrooms during the days leading up to the great Breakfeast. Principal Goheen even joined in the fun, wearing a silly turkey hat and doing the turkey strut along with the students. On Monday, November 28, all rst grade students joined together again to kick off the start of the Christmas season. They sat together in the gym and listened to their teachers read aloud The Night Before Christmas. Students are decorating sugarplums as a take-home family project, and their creations will adorn the rst-grade hallway at school. The teachers are planning to teach reading comprehension strategies, as well as writing, math, and science concepts using the themes of sugarplums, gingerbread men, and reindeer. Learning in rst grade is fun!
Tri County High School is instituting a call system to inform parents when their son or daughter has an unexcused absence. The call will take place at approximately 5:00 p.m. each day the student has not been excused with either a phone call or a note. Once the parent receives the phone call, they will have 24 hours to properly excuse their son or daughter. This can be done by calling the school ofce at 231.937.4338 ext. 120, at anytime or sending in a note with your student the next day. In order for this communication to be effective, it is very important the high school has correct contact information on le. Please verify that we have the correct information via the parent portal or calling the ofce at 231.937.4338 if you do not have internet access. If you are unfamiliar with the parent portal, this is an excellent tool for parents to monitor their students progress via the internet. Parents have access to their childs grades, attendance, and disciplinary referrals 24/7. Please go to www.tricountyschools.com and click on the icon that says Parent Portal. No, we didnt ll our plates with turkey, stufng, mashed potatoes, or pie. We lled our plates with pinecones and needles, leaves, stones, sticks, nuts, and milkweed seeds. Mrs. Deweys class went on a nature collection walk and used their collections to create art. Based on the artist, Andy Goldsworthys structures, we used spirals, arches, and curved lines, to create designs and structures on paper plates. We put our plates outdoors, underneath our classroom window, so we can observe how the weather changes our art through the seasons. A big thank you goes out to Independent Bank in Howard City for recently conducting a coat drive for the students and families of Tri County Area Schools. Coats were collected, as well as hats, gloves, mittens, and boots. Some items were also donated by Whites in Howard City and Irresistible Clothing in Sand Lake. We would also like to thank Gary and Sues Laundromat in Sand Lake for cleaning all donated items. We appreciate the community support in keeping our students safe and warm this winter.

If you are not sure about the time, sign up for a tentative appointment so we can plan and prepare for the day and we can be exible and t you in when you arrive. Appointments are encouraged, walk-ins will be welcome. If you havent given blood through Michigan Blood before, pick up and ll out a green sheet with your information to keep things moving along that day. Staff, parents, graduates, and community members are welcome and encouraged to also give blood at this drive. Health Matters
Take a look around your home. See any dust? Chances are you do. According to recent estimates, an average-sized home produces over 40 pounds of dust each year. In spite of this gure, many people think dust is no big deal until they discover just how much of it stays trapped in their home. As heating and cooling units recycle the air within homes, pollutants like dust, chemicals and gases pile up, resulting in poor air quality.
Whether used occasionally or frequently, almost anything can emit pollution, including air fresheners, space heaters and household cleaners. As the number of pollutants in the air increases, some adults and children may become sensitive to them and suffer dizziness, headaches, nausea, sinus congestion and itchy eyes and throats. Poor indoor air quality can cause asthma, too. Fortunately, indoor air pollution can be controlled and air quality improved.
To control air pollution, you need to target all of the items in your home that contribute to the problem and change, reduce or eliminate your use of them. When working with chemicals and other toxic substances, go outdoors if possible. If not, open the doors and windows and turn on some fans to create adequate ventilation. Use toxic substances as little as possible and switch to more natural products when available. Finally, steer clear of all major work involving toxic substances like the removal of lead paint or asbestos. These jobs are best left up to professionals who have the knowledge and resources to protect themselves.
Helping people sleep since 1980
To improve the air quality in your home, you need to limit your use of toxic substances and take advantage of the tools available to reduce air pollution. If you dont have them already, install exhaust fans in your kitchen and bathrooms and use them as needed to remove noxious fumes. Ensure your furnace receives outside air to improve its efciency and prevent the build-up of carbon monoxide. Purchase an air purier with a HEPA lter and use it regularly to clean the air within your home. There are a number of products on the market to improve indoor air quality. For further ideas, consult a professional. The less polluted the air is in your home, the healthier you and your family are likely to be. Dont neglect the air quality within your home. Do your best to keep it as free of pollutants as possible.

What can you do? Stay aware, awake, alert, and sober. Remember, safety belts are your best defense in any collision. Be alert for deer in spring and fall, especially at dawn and dusk. Heed deer crossing and speed limit signs, particularly on two-lane roads.
For more information about what you can do to avoid a car-deer accident and what to do if you do have a car-deer accident, please visit our website http://www.hillsbodyshop.com/
If you have had the misfortune of hitting a deer, Hills Body Shop, Inc. is here to help restore your vehicle to its pre-accident condition. Your insurance company may refer you to one of their preferred repair facilities. These body shops have an agreement with your insurance company to keep down the cost of your vehicle repair in exchange for referrals. We believe its not in your best interest to take your vehicle to these contracted repair shops. We believe safety and quality should come before cost, whereas these preferred shops seem to put cost before quality and safety. We believe it to be unethical to cheapen your vehicle repair to save your insurance company money. Youre our customer, not your insurance companys. Hills Body Shop, Inc. has always and will always provide the nest repairs available.
We at Hills Body Shop have noticed an increase in deer hits in the month of October through December and a big surge directly after the end of Daylight Savings, because more people are still on the road at sunset.
If a crash is unavoidable: Dont swerve! Brake rmly Hold on to the steering wheel. Stay in your lane. Bring your vehicle to a controlled stop.

For some of us we think our education is over when we leave High School. Others go on to College and some continue with Post Graduate education. And then there is the school of life. We all attend that. Some of us are fast learners, some are slow learners. Some times we continue to make the same mistakes over and over. One of my Life Teachers said, There are no mistakes, it is just like making a movie, there are mis-takes. That means we get to keep doing it over and over until we get it right take after take. So that is what real education is about. A wise man or woman has had many mis-takes. He or she has tried it many ways and has found ways that work better than others. Formal education is very important, but that education is learning about things that other people have tried. Their trials and errors can shorten our process if we are smart enough to learn from their mis-takes. But ultimately we have to then go out on our own and see how things work. We have to learn our own lessons. After formal education there are many ways to learn. Books are full of information. Lakeview has a fabulous new Library. Some people do not have time to read or do not like to read. For them, there are books on tape. I drive to Alma three days per week. That is about ve hours a week. Listening to a book on tape or an educational program, while driving, is a great way to learn effortlessly during a time that would otherwise be totally wasted. In a year that is about 250 hours of productive , learning. The internet with Google and downloadable information has given a whole new meaning to learning and education. Nearly any information is immediately available to anyone who is looking for answers. Knowledge is an interesting thing. The more information you have, the more it integrates with everything else you know. For example, if the only tool you had was a hammer, it would be hard to cut a board making a nice square cut. When you add tools, you can do more work with more precision. When you have knowledge from many different areas of life, then you can begin to think outside the box. You can put new ideas together. You will think of things that no one else ever thought of because you can now see things in a new and unique way. You will want to study things outside of your normal interest. If all you read now is hunting or sports magazines, try reading about cooking or religion. If all you read is about religion or politics, try reading about health and auto mechanics. Spread you knowledge wings. Try something new. As far as your health, you want to have as much knowledge as possible. Gone are the days when you can just let the Doctor do everything. Now it is important to educate yourself as much as possible about normal health, nutrition, toxins, supplements, food, cleanses, exercise, etc to maintain perfect health. If you have an illness, study about this condition. Explore options to nd other things that may help. Become an expert. Learn to be the captain of your own ship, with as much education, information and knowledge as possible to guide you. Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.
