The Greatest

Story

Light, Fire, and Oil

We are constantly aware of the visible symbols of the Christmas season colored lights, Christmas trees, etc. Light, fire, and oil are the great symbols in the Bible for our ministry in the world. The great light of Christ shown in the darkness of Bethlehem (Matthew 4:16). As His luminaries, we also are to shine. The fire of the Holy Spirit burns away impurities, and we are anointed by His oil. We then apply the oil of healing. We have a unique team ministering for ten days in Nigeria. Headed by Jim Powers, the team also includes staff members Steve Hayes and Shannon Moore, as well as Angie Hiers and my wife, Janet. They will link up with Ashley Hiers, who is currently serving there. With over 140 million people, Nigeria is the most populous nation in Africa and the eighth in the world, fifty percent Muslim, and the scene of violent persecution. The team will also work with an IMB librarian, Deana Shotts, whom God is using in amazing ways at our Seminary as an innovative strategist to touch unreached people groups. Our team will implement a new vision for The Widows Oil, inspired by 2 Kings 4:1-7. When a Nigerians husband dies, his family can confiscate everything, including her children. This is a powerful persecution tool for those who hate Christians. They need our help. Steve will be speaking, while Janet teaches pastors wives as they all seek to interact with the women and the national leaders. They will also be making two trips into the bush, seeking to fulfill James 1:27, Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress. No mission trip is a vacation. We develop prayer insights, a greater burden for world missions, and a challenge to share the gospel back home. We show our true colors when we are in the crucible. Paul was a career missionary, but preached through a series of shortterm projects. Jesus organized brief teaching missions, for the 12 and the 72 (Matthew 10, Luke 9, 10). While the local church is the epicenter of all ministry, we sow seeds so that short-term trips can produce long-term fruit. You dont have to wait for an opportunity to go to a country; your community, neighborhood, and family needs the gospel. God says, Bring me another vessel, which He can pour His power into (2 Kings 4:6). Your joy will never run dry.

There is a guest reception in the Commons immediately following the Saturday night and Sunday morning 11:00 service. Come and meet Pastor Wicker.

What do you do when life seems out of control? Someone has said that the true measure of a person is not how they respond when things are going well, but rather what they do when their world is shaken. This week, watch Daniels response in hard times and discover his secret for staying steadfast.
