The North-West University (NWU) is one of the pre-eminent and highly sought-after universities by students in South Africa and abroad. The university has a population in excess of 46 000 full and part-time students distributed among three regional campuses. Its mission is to become a balanced teaching-learning and research university within a robust research and innovation framework. Over the past two years the NWU has been intensifying its investments in research and capacity building with ground-breaking research in some fields. The Vaal Triangle Campus (VTC) is one of the three campuses strategically situated on the tranquil banks of the majestic Vaal river; a landmark of the province of Gauteng in South Africa. Its serene location, a home away from home within a protected territory with domesticated wildlife provides students with an idyllic environment to study and engage within their surroundings in a holistic manner. The region boasts both national and multi-national industries leading in the fields of petroleum, petroleum bi-products and steel manufacturing. NWU has strategically positioned itself and is poised to become a leading University in the region by providing both undergraduate and post-graduate studies in Humanities, Economic Sciences, Information Technology and research support to industries, local communities and municipalities in the region. Against this backdrop, the Vaal Triangle Campus of the NWU invites post-doctoral fellows within the broad field of Economic Sciences and related disciplines to support our research team to conduct and promote relevant research within the School of Economic Sciences proposed research entity. The School of Economic Sciences identified its broad area of research as poverty alleviation and consumer behaviour. Aspects and approaches from the humanities, for example philosophical issues, are also present and embedded in various branches of the Economic Sciences, although this is not always recognised or valued, and we would also like to create a home for the exploration of these types of issues. Our main area of research is around Development Economics, but also encompassing the following sub areas: o o o o o Local Economic Development (LED) and the alleviation of social challenges Economic Impact Studies Risk management and serious gaming The psychology of the black Generation Y and its implications Service delivery
