1999 2011:

Formulation Scientist

Principal Scientist Drug-delivery

Research Scientist

Lyotropic Therapeutics, Inc.

Co-founder, Formulation Scientist

Company profile: Specialty pharma company, grew from 3 to ~8 employees, licensing/royalties-based revenues, ca. $1.5MM/yr. Product development based on my patented drug solubilization, delivery and stabilization technologies. Supergenerics approach reformulating APIs with known formulation issues. Responsibilities: Technical Provided a continuous stream of inventions and patent-protected formulations that were the basis for the company. Solubilized and formulated challenging APIs for injectable, oral, topical and ophthalmic routes. Led all aspects of technical R&D from formulation conception through tech transfer of product to licensing partner. Devised and patented novel formulations as colloidal dispersions, solid dosage forms, and ready-to-use sterile liquid solution formulations incorporating a new stabilization system for labile small molecules (esters, amides, halogens) and biopharmaceuticals (deamidation of asparaginyl residues). Led in the DoE and interpretation of analytical/stability measurements. Brought forth new, innovative formulations based on such materials as lipid nanoparticles, nanocrystals, emulsions, liposomes, cyclodextrins, micelles, microemulsions, cubosomes, polymer encapsulation, and hydrogels. Led processing efforts that make use of high-speed homogenization, microfluidization, lyophilization, steam sterilization, gamma irradiation, spray-drying, chemical precipitation, interfacial reactions, phase transformations, and polymerization. Interfaced with raw materials suppliers and supervised excipient/API stability studies. Explored the compatibility and effects of various enclosure systems. Formulated small molecules, proteins/antibodies and siRNAs for cell culture and animal studies. Authored patents and office action responses. Consulted as expert witness in the area of drug formulation patent infringement cases. ManagerialIn this entrepreneurial environment, I reported directly to the CEO, managed a lab of 3-6 MS/PhD level scientists, and was in charge of managing the Lyotropics laboratory personnel and technical interfacing with outside collaborators and licensees. Once products were carried up the development curve to human/animal in vivo testing with subsequent sale to industrial partners, was in charge of technical scale-up and transfer to CROs, and support of CMC preparation and NDA filings. Accomplishments: THREE PRODUCTS OF MY DESIGN NOW IN PREPARATION FOR FDA SUBMISSIONS, WITH A PROJECTED TOTAL MARKET VALUE ON THE ORDER OF $100MM/YR., TO PROVIDE A ROYALTY STREAM TO INVESTORS AND PRINCIPALS. AN ADDITIONAL 2 PRODUCTS CURRENTLY IN LICENSING NEGOTIATIONS. CENTRAL IN RAISING CAPITAL FROM VENTURE AND INDUSTRIAL SOURCES. SEVEN ISSUED INTERNATIONAL PATENTS, EACH UNIQUE, WITH EXPIRATION AS LATE AS 2027.

1995 1999:

SelectRelease, LLC

Principal Scientist

Company profile: Small venture, 3 people, precursor to Lyotropics. Developed: A) virus detection technologies incorporating aerosol-phase characterization with electrospray/differential mobility analyzer equipment, in concert with density-gradient centrifugation and ultrafiltration; and B) surfactant- and lipidbased formulations for personal care/cleaning, OTC pharmaceutical, nutriceutical, and food/beverage products using my proprietary technology. Focus on implementation of controlled-release / encapsulation. Responsibilities: Company success was predicated on my ability to apply innovative problem-solving and paradigm-breaking insights to formulation challenges. Hands-on labwork as well as oversight of research and development activities, analysis and report/proposal writing. Central in strategic planning, intellectual property and contracting, and technology acquisition. Carried Army ERDEC contract over from SUNY. Accomplishments: ATTRACTED THE FUNDING AND EXECUTIVE TEAM THAT BECAME LYOTROPIC THERAPEUTICS. THE PHARMACEUTICAL RIGHTS TO THE TECHNOLOGY, AND MY EMPLOY, WERE TRANSFERRED TO LYOTROPICS IN 1999.

1991 1995:

Responsibilities: TeachingTaught Biophysics, Biomaterials, and a post-graduate Polymer Chemistry course of my own design and implementation. Supervisor for two graduate students. Also taught summer course for inner-city high school students. ResearchLed a research group focused on the formation of nanoporous materials through the polymerization of lyotropic (lipid-based) liquid crystals, with subsequent post-processing including electroplating at the nanostructured level. Advanced the application of these nanostructured polymers for bioseparationsultrafiltration, chromatography, other bioassaysand for encapsulation and superporous / superabsorbent hydrogels. Accomplishments: AWARDED SBIR GRANTS FROM DOD AND NIH, AND THE NSF/INDUSTRY CENTER FOR BIOSURFACES. CREATED THE COATED LIPID NANOPARTICLE TECHNOLOGY WHICH FORMED THE BASIS OF SELECTRELEASE, LLC. GRADUATED 2 MASTERS DEGREE STUDENTS.
