Lesson Planning Waynesburg University Back yard Ecosystem Prezi _____________________________________________

Pennsylvania Academic Standard(s) addressed during this lesson: (Provide Standard number and statement)

BIO.B.4.1.1: Describe the levels of ecological organization (i.e., organism, population, community, ecosystem, biome, biosphere). BIO.B.4.1.2: Describe characteristic biotic and abiotic components of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. BIO.B.4.2.1: Describe how energy flows through an ecosystem (e.g., food chains, food webs, energy pyramids). BIO.B.4.2.2: Describe biotic interactions in an ecosystem (e.g., competition, predation, symbiosis). BIO.B.4.2.4: Describe how ecosystems change in response to natural and human disturbances (e.g., climate changes, introduction of nonnative species, pollution, fires).
Lesson Objective(s) (Stated in observable and measurable terms) The student will be able to: Identify organisms, populations and communities Identify biotic and abiotic components Create a food web Identify the energy levels in an ecosystem Assessment Plan (What will be done to determine if lesson objectives have been met?) Students will create a Prezi presentation about their backyard, describing how their backyard is an ecosystem.

Materials: Computer Access Inclusion Techniques for Students with Special Needs: Students with special needs may need help from the teacher, aide or another student to help brainstorm organisms that are in his backyard. In addition they may be given a graphic organizer to help organize their information. Enrichment Techniques: Gifted students might go beyond their backyard and look at the ecosystem of their state.

Lesson Differentiation (What modifications/accommodations will be made to ensure that ALL students have access to and are able to participate in the lesson): The ecosystems will vary according to where the student lives. The ecosystem can be simple or complex depending on the abilities of the student.

Lesson Presentation
Introduction/Motivational Activities/Anticipatory Set: We will review community, population and ecosystem. Then we will brainstorm as a group what is in everyones backyards. Detailed Teaching Sequence:

(Provide sufficient detail that would enable a substitute to effectively present this lesson. Bulleted statements are preferred) 1. Give students the worksheet the backyard ecosystem a. b. c. d. e. f. g. h. List 10 biotic factors in their backyard List 6 abiotic factors in their backyard List 5 populations in their backyard Describe the community of their backyard Describe the habitat of each population Describe the niche of each population Describe 5 ways the community and environment interact Describe how the ecosystem is balanced i. ii. iii. iv. 2. 3. What is the constant energy source? How is energy converted to energy organisms can use? How are organic matter and inorganic nutrients recycled/ How do you or others affect your backyard ecosystem

Show students a sample Prezi presentation Demonstrate to students how to access Prezi a. b. c. d. e. How to add text How to add pictures How to frame items together How to add videos How to create a path

Guided Practice/Independent Practice/Assessment Activities 1. 2. 3. Go to computer lab or get laptops Have students add pictures and videos on their own Have students create their path

Closure: Students will share their presentations with the class. We will discuss how our backyards are little ecosystems and they are similar and different.
