Dad: Vice President of Deposit Services (Operations/Product Manager) Mom: Registered Nurse Education? Dad: Bachelor of Science, business administration Mom: B.S., nursing What is your salary? Dad: $120,000 (2010) Mom: $80,000 (2010) what do you think about being in the top income bracket? Mom: frightening Dad: don't know how other people make ends meet we're not complaining Do you have people who work under you? If so, how many? Dad: 2 managers that report to him, 12 people that report to those managers (6 for each) risk management team also reports to him Mom: not on a regular basis on any given night, one of us is 'in charge' Who is/are your immediate superior(s)? Dad: Executive VP, she reports to president Mom: used to be nurse manager, now nursing director; she reports to director of hematology/oncology, she reports to the VP for nursing on a best nursing practice committee Does your position command respect from your colleagues? How are you treated at work? Dad: is chosen as a speaker at webinars asked by management to help present ideas Do you feel your peers outside of work have respect for you because of your job? Dad: if you ignore the banking piece asked by outsiders to talk on subjects Mom: more so outside than inside people outside of the profession especially respect it How equal/unequal do you think opportunity is in the US? Dad: I come from a blue-collar family where attitude was that you worked and found ways of making opportunity Not ungrateful I don't know who decides 'oh, I'm going to take this away from someone else' Mom: About gender pay gap: Dad: Things have changed so much in 40 or 50 years...I think this attitude [regarding the woman's role in the family] has changed Mom: I don't see that a lot in my industry

What do you think about the Occupy Wall Street movement? Dad: How much money do you have saved (that is, amount of money after taxes, mortgage, ectmoney that you actually have)? Wealth: slightly over $500,000 Dad: I think we're on the lower end because we didn't get things from our parent the bank owns most of the house Fact that you're in the 93rd percentile: shocking works with a lot of affluent clients Mom: we own half a house Inherent challenges/privileges Dad: Not sure I'd point to anything My original plan was to work for an accounting firm At Babson, he was interviewed by Big 8 accounting firm when they asked what he did and he said he worked to support himself, they did not look favorably at it (one guy hated my green suit) Mom: I was really advantaged because I chose to go into a bachelor program instead of a 2-year college (that was not required for RN back then) she was criticized at the time her guidance counselors in high school directed her to 4 year programs (most people went for diploma programs) if I had gone to a high school in Fall River, I probably wouldn't have been pointed in that direction Disparity of race Mom: weren't many people of color, except in METCO...many excelled in what they liked METCO were somewhat hand-picked based on what they could bring to table Dad: METCO is only offered to families who wanted to find opportunities In College Mom: didn't see a lot of things on race we went to Dorchester to pick up a girl, and her brother looked us up and down like 'where are you taking my sister?' Dad: community college was much more socioeconomically varied students were mostly white, but in college it didn't seem too much Reaction to black female student treatment: Reaction to male/female treatment in school: Dad: Certain things administrators don't like Marya [my sister] doing certain things that they wouldn't mind a guy doing Mom: that does not surprise me
