SIMPLE PAST Study this example: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was an Austrian musician and composer. He lived from 1756 to 1791. he started composing at the age of five and wrote more than 600 pieces of music. He was only 35 years old when he died. Lived/ started/ wrote/ was/ died are all verbs in the past simple. The regular verbs end in ed: Before working here, I worked in a shop. I decided not to go. She passed her examination. However, many verbs are irregular. These verbs have different forms. We have to memorize them: Write wrote See saw Go went Shut shut Do did In questions and negatives we use did/ didnt + the infinitive of the main verb: I enjoyed the party. I didnt enjoy the party. Did you enjoy the party. The past of be (am/ is/ are) is was/ were: I was I wasnt Was I? You were you werent were you? He was he wasnt was he? She was she wasnt was she? It was it wasnt was it? We were we werent were we? They were they werent were they? We went to the mall. We didnt go to the mall. Did you go to the mall?

Note with the verb be, we NEVER use the auxiliary did!!!

They were playing = they hadnt finished playing they were doing the action. The structure of the past continuous is: Was/ were + verb (-ing) I was playing I wasnt playing Was I playing? You were playing you werent playing Were you playing? He was playing he wasnt playing Was he playing? She was playing she wasnt playing Was she playing? It was playing it wasnt playing Was it playing? We were playing we werent playing Were we playing? They were playing they werent playing Were they playing? Compare the past continuous (I was doing) and the simple past (I did): Past Continuous (in the middle of an action): I was walking home when I met Dave. Ann was watching TV when the phone rang. Past Simple (complete action) I walked home after the party last night. Ann watched television a lot last weekend. We use the past simple and the past continuous together to say that something happened in the middle of something else: Tom burned his hand when he was cooking dinner. While I was working in the garden, I hurt my back. I was walking down the street when I saw my friend. Some verbs are NEVER used in the continuous: Know, want, believe, like, love, hate, need, prefer, mean, understand, remember, contain, depend, seem, etc. Yes, I understood the subject. not I was understanding. The party was boring. I wanted to go home not I was wanting.
